THE CONCERT FOR MONTSERRAT
MUSIC FOR MONTSERRAT - Various Artists
Video
Montserrat is a tiny island 39.5
square miles situated in the Caribbean Sea 1350 miles southeast of
Miami. It is part of the Leeward Island chain of the Lesser Antilles.
Before the volcanic eruptions, the island was a place to go for peace
& tranquillity. The helpfulness & friendliness of the Montserratian
people aided the success of the AIR studio facility, opened in 1979 by
Sir George Martin CBE. For nearly 11 years AIR Studios helped to
shape the sounds of the world's finest recording artists & the
Montserratians were proud that their island was host to many famous
stars. Sadly it ended with Hurrican Hugo in Sept. 1989 which brought
the island to its knees. It was then that the islanders courage was seen
in the face of disaster as they braced themselves & started all over
again. Tragically now for 2 years they've had to bear a cycle of
volcanic eruptions. Thousands have lost everything: their homes &
livelihoods, & some their lives. On Sept. 15, 1997, an impressive
line-up of stars gathered at London's Royal Albert Hall to generously
give their time, effort & talent in sympathy, encouragement &
support to this brave little island.

Reviews 'n' News-
Brits Rock for Montserrat
Beatles producer George Martin found he had a supergroup on his hands at his benefit for the volcano-ravaged island of Montserrat held at London's Royal Albert Hall Monday night. After each artist had performed a solo set, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Eric Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins, and Mark Knopfler all jumped onstage for a performance of "Hey Jude." Martin's recording studio on the island was destroyed by the volcano. "It seems the world judges Montserrat to be finished, but many Montserratians believe otherwise and hope that a new future can be built in the north of the country," Martin said at the sold-out concert, which raised more than $1 million for the islanders. The concert is being sold on pay-per-view worldwide, so more funds are on the way.

Armani's Armory All-Stars
Good news for fans of the extravagantly overdone: the eighties are back! Or they are in Manhattan, anyway, where Italian designer Giorgio Armani threw a party Thursday night that rivalled the most excessive fetes of that fabulously festive epoch. Let's start with just a sampling of the hundreds of guests who showed up at the Armory at 26th and Lexington to help Armani kick off the opening of two new uptown stores: Winona Ryder, singers Lyle Lovett and Joan Osborne, spiffy basketball coach Pat Riley, supermodel Naomi Campbell, and both TV Marilyns--Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino. The whole damned Armory was draped in striped bunting and featured many multitiered platforms. The better to see all the entertainment, which included performances by The Fugees, who thanked Armani "for giving a few kids from the ghetto a few suits," Eric Clapton, who did a duet with Sheryl Crow, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, and the Wallflowers, the supercool, ultra-hip band led by Bob Dylan's son, Jakob. Though nearly dead with excitement already, we must report that other highlights of the evening (rumored to have cost a couple million bucks) included two short films: Armani Olympiad, a lively little work featuring people in Armani duds performing athletic feats in large stadiums ("It has a real Leni Riefenstahl quality to it," remarked one observer); and Salvation, a satiric David Lachapelle short featuring Jennifer Tilly that had guests howling over its premise: Armani will save you from all of the bad taste in the world. And did we mention cocktails and dinner, the fashion show and its fifty models, and the toe-tapping performance by flamenco superstar Joaquin Cortes, due to appear that very next night at Radio City Music Hall? Asked why she likes Armani, Naomi Campbell, clad in a tasteful navy blue Armani pantsuit, said, "He's a wonderful tailor." Honey, tailors don't throw parties like this.

Notes:
Proceeds from the sale of DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES
TRIBUTE will go to benefit the charitable trust fund created
in her memory.
A benefit album for Diana, Princess of Wales
who died tragically in a Parisian car wreck under (as yet) unresolved
mysterious/suspect circumstances involving papparazzi photographers.
Diana was divorced from Charles, Prince of Wales (heir apparant to the throne of England)
who sponsored the numerous Prince's Trust benefit concerts to which Eric graciously
contributed his talents (
1983,
1986,
1987,
1988,
1996)
Conspicuous by it's absence is Elton John's re-working of Candle In The Wind,
which he sang at the funeral and released as a CD5 single entitled English Rose.
CD Now
Benefiting the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, this
double CD brings together some of the biggest names in
several genres of music, from R.E.M to Aretha Franklin to
Placido Domingo, who dedicate both well-known and brand
new material to the memory of the Princess. Included among
the classic pop hits are Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven,"
Bruce Springsteen's "Streets of Philadelphia," and Diana
Ross's "Missing You," all touching, melancholy ballads which
underscore the tragedy of Diana's death and the depth of the
loss felt by those who mourn. Some of the songs written
especially for the album include Peter Gabriel's spare "In The
Sun," Sinead O'Connor's soulful version of the hymn played
at Diana's funeral, "Make Me A Channel of Your Peace,"
and a moving remake of the Eurythmics' "Angel" by Annie
Lennox. A moment of uplift is provided by the Pretenders'
hopeful "Hymn to Her:" "She will always carry on/Something
is lost, but something is found/They will keep on speaking her
name/Some things change, some stay the same."
Rolling Stone
3 Stars (out of 5) - "...varied...both in its quality and in the
range of artists represented....will move all those who found in
Princess Diana a symbol for the struggles of their own lives..."

Review -
CD Now
As one of the hottest songwriter/producers of the nineties,
Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds has worked with such
disparate artists as Whitney Houston, Boyz II Men and Eric
Clapton, and is the owner of too many awards to count. He is
also the co-founder of LaFace Records, home of Toni
Braxton and TLC. But, fortunately for his fans, he can't be
kept away from the stage, and the MTV Unplugged series
provides the perfect venue for his work.
In addition to his behind-the-scenes talents, Babyface has all
the tools necessary to be a captivating stage performer. His
voice is silky smooth and is capable of leaping from a low,
sexy whisper to a supple falsetto in the space of two notes, and
he's a gifted guitarist and pianist. Joining him on this
occasion is a veritable who's-who of performers who have
found success interpreting his songs. Eric Clapton joins him
for an upbeat version of "Change The World" and the down
home "Talk To Me." Shanice Wilson, K-Ci & JoJo also drop
by to sing a tune or two.
