Royal Aspirations for Glorious Competition

Motor Racing: A Sport for a Monarch

If a sport in Jordan can boast being the sport fit for royalty, it is truly motor sport.

Since the early days of his prosperous reign, the late Majesty King Hussein Bin Talal aspired for competitive motor racing, hence He patronised the opening of the Royal Automobile Club of Jordan in 1953 and took part in the first ever Rumman Hill Climb in 1956.

Motor Sport in Jordan truly flourished through the Royal participation throughout the years. Through competition with Jordan’s best competitors, the late King Hussein achieved remarkable results and achieved best times in the Rumman Hill Climb. The thorough organisation of racing events and the Royal participation and patronage culminated in making motor racing an event of truly middle-eastern and international fame, and despite the tougher and tougher competitive racing, His Majesty King Hussein held on to the record of best time for a Jordanian competitor in Rumman Hill Climb.

During the reign of King Hussein, rallying was transformed form a simple event into a real challenge for cars and drivers and is now sanctioned by the FIA, the world body in charge of Motor Sports. In the early days , competitors rallied in standard road cars, with hardly any racing preparation but as time went on, rallying in Jordan developed to become a leading sport, with ‘real performance’ rally cars and aggressive regional and international competitors. The Jordan Rally, which is part of the Middle East Championship, sets standards to be admired by others and in accordance with FIA regulations.

King Hussein’s footsteps in racing were followed by King Abdallah Bin AL Hussein ( then Prince Abdallah) whose participation in rallies and racing enriched the competition, especially when he achieved Overall Jordan Champion in 1986 and 1988.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Bin Al Hussein chairs the Upper Motor Sports committee and has guided it during the past 10 years.

Motor Sports Organisers, competitors and spectators are saddened by the death of His Majesty King Hussein and will miss the joy and pleasure he brought with him. The words “ Eternal Glory “ befit His remarkable achievements as a patron and competitor.
