Chapter 1

I danced to the music and watched the five guys on stage. I could see them perfectly, now that my eyesite was perfect. I knew that they couldn't see me. If I wanted them to they could, but now wasn't the time. I looked at my partner Caroline. She wasn't dancing.

"Why aren't you dancing?" I asked.

"We're suppose to be studying them. Anyway, I sorta like the Backstreet Boys better."

"Yeah, but it won't kill you to have a little fun."

"Ha ha."

"Anyway, what don't we know about them? We know everything about them. Even more than they know."

"Ya but...I feel like I should be doing more. I mean, you know what this is. And you know what's going to happen tomorrow."

'Yeah,' I thought, 'this is the last one. And tomorrow all of their lives are going to change because of one little x-ray.'

I probaly should introduce myself. Mariah Jackson. 20 years old and angel of 6 months. Yes, I'm a angel. Yes, I'm dead. No big deal. Anyway, we get special powers. Here's how it happened.

It was December 31, 2003 aka New Years Eve. I went to a club with a bunch of my friends to celebrate the New Year. No big deal. As, I was driving home, a semi, who's driver had a blood alcohol level of 0.1, hit a patch of ice and then hit me. For me, instant death. For him, five years behind bars. Hey, nobody ever said life was fair; neither is death.

When I woke up a couple hours later, I was laying on a waterbed. Caroline was sitting on a chair next to the bed and reading, what I later found out was, my file.

"Where am I?" I demanded.

"Heaven, girl and there's nothing you can do about it."

"Who are you?"

"Caroline Cochran. I'm going to be your partner for eternity."

"Nice to meet you," I said shaking her hand. "How come you're my partner? Why do I need a partner? What did you die of? How old are you?"

"Becaus of your will, everyone gets one, lupus, 37."

'My will,' I thought. My friend Amanda and I had made wills just for fun. I hadn't thought that mine would be used so soon.

"Lupus?" I asked. "That must have sucked. Immune system, right?"

"You were majoring in medicine, weren't you?"

"I was going to be a pathologist."

"You got me because you made a donation to a lupus fund in your will. Now according to this," she said, holding up the folder, "You're 20 years old and you were a student at UW-Madison. You were known for your curly red hair and everyone called you Flame. Am I right?"

I nodded. Then I asked,

"How long have I been dead? How long have you?"

"A couple of hours and a few months over five years."

"It took them five years to find you a partner?"

"Her. God's a her. We should go see her now."

So I went to meet God. She explained that now I would have special powers, like extra sensitive senses and stuff. I would get project on Earth to work on. The next morning, I woke up when Olivia was shaking me. Olivia is our boss. She then explained that Caroline and I were getting our first assignment. We would go down to Earth in about six months. Until then we had to study material. All of the sudden, the material appeared. Books, movies and folders full of stuff. Olivia handed me a file and then dissapeared.

I started to read from the folder.

"OK, you guys will not be going down to Earth until June 17. As you see, you have a lot to study. The project has to do with a group called *NSYNC." I raised my eyebrows: what help did *NSYNC need? "Yes, Mariah, it's the group you're thinking of. Now, on the 17th, you'll go to the concert. On the 18th, one of them will go to a doctors appointment. Caroline, you'll go with him and Mariah will keep track of the others."

When I read what was going to happen, I gasped. I silently handed the folder to Caroline and her eyes widened. Then she looked around the room.

"We'll we better get to work."

So for the next 6 months, we studied *NSYNC and learned everthing about them. For the time we were down there, we would be staying in a house on the edge of Orlando. No humans could see it because it was just used for heavenly projects like ours. We didn't have to worry about how far away everything was because we could zap ourselfs where ever we needed to go.
