I was 11 years old and I had just moved to Florida with my mom and new step father. My father had died when I was 5 years old. Truthfully, I don't think my mom ever loved him. Truthfully, I don't think my mom ever loved me. But I never really liked her. About a month after Dad died, she started to date. There were a few I liked but most I didn't. And go figure that the one I hated the most-she married. And then we had to move to Florida.
Anyway, I was swimming in our pool and my mom was on the deck. We heard the doorbell ring and my mom went to get it. A couple of minutes later, another girl came outside.
"Who are you?" I asked.
Leslie Carter. I live next door."
"Why are you here?"
"We brought over a pie."
"Why did you come?"
"I wanted to get away from my brother and his friends. They have a band and they just released a song and they're being a pain."
"What song?"
"It's called We've Got It Goin' On."
"How's it go?"
Leslie started to sing but then changed her mind.
"Why don't you come over to my house? I have a copy in my room."
"Ok." I got out of the pool and put some clothes on over my swimsuit. Then Leslie and I went over to her house. She lead me up some stairs and we came to a long hallway. She took me to her room.
"This is my room but I share with my sister," she told me. She went over to her tape player and pressed play. I listened for a bit and recoginzed the song.
"OH! I love this son. Turn it up."
She did and we started to dance around her room. I was jumping on her bed when, all of the sudden, 5 guys rushed in.
"LESLIE!" one yelled.
"What?" she asked as she turned down the sound.
"Is our song on the radio?"
"No. I was playing it for our new neighbor."
"I'm Drew," I told them.
They all introduced themselves. Nick, Brian, AJ, Howie, and Kevin.
"You guys are really good," I told them.
"Thanks," they said.
"I bet you'll be really big."
"Really?" asked Brian.
"Yeah."
"Do you think there will be a lot of girls chasing us?" asked AJ.
"Ignore him," said Howie. "He's girl crazy."
We all started to talk and we became friends. They guys were over at the Carter's a lot and so was I because my parents went away on a lot of business trips and I had to stay with someone. A lot of the time, I wouldn't be able to sleep when I was over there, so I would go down to the basement and watch the guys practice. After awhile, one of them would take me back upstairs and then sing me to sleep.
