Chapter 14

After Kevin got off the phone, he was in shock. Mr. And Mrs. Morris had agreed to let him adopt Drew. They told him to have his lawyer call theirs.

So, Kevin started to concentrate on the adoption. Soon after that, I started to get better.

"I don't really know what turned it around," the doctor confessed to Kevin one day. All of the sudden, Drew had this brand new energy. Like a new reason to live."

Now, let me tell you, adoption is not the fastest process in the world. The courts had to check out Kevin's background, his income, everything. They did tests to make sure he wasn't sick. They talked to me to make sure that this was what I wanted. The whole process took over a year. I was in and out of the hospital. I was in for my treatments and Kevin took me out after them. Sometimes I stayed at his new house, sometimes at Leslie's.

It was arranged for Kevin to go to his lawyer's office on December 23 and they were going to sign the papers. He didn't tell me because he wanted to be a surprise.

After the adoption papers had been signed, Kevin went to the hospital to tell me. I was there for a check up. He had planned it so he could take me out of the hospital, no matter what the result of the check up. Then he was going to take me to Kentucky.

As Kevin neared my room, he could hear Will Smith blaring.

'What's going on?' he thought.

He entered the room and saw that there was a party going on.

"Kevin, good thing you're here. We were trying to get a hold of you," Brian told him.

"What's going on?" he asked.

"KEVIN!!" I called out.

Leslie and I were on my bed, dancing around to It's All Good.

"What?" he asked.

"My cancer's in remission!"

"Really?" he asked, shocked.

I nodded, smiled, and kept singing along.

Kevin looked at the 16 year old girl dancing on the bed and he thoughts went back to the first time he had seen Drew, dancing on Leslie's bed to We've Got It Goin' On.

"I've got some more good news for you," he told me, nearing the bed.

"What?"

"I'm your dad now."

I let out a shriek and jumped off the bed. Kevin gave me a hug.

"Are you telling the truth?"

"Why would I lie?"

I let out another whoop of joy.

"And, you get to come with me and Brian to Kentucky for Christmas. You can come home with me tonight and we leave tomorrow."

"Really? Then let's go."

We grabbed the stereo and CDs and left the hospital. I was in my best mood since the Billboards.
