Chapter 2

When Gwen woke up, even before she opened her eyes, she knew that she wasn't in her alley. It smelled strange and she could hear metal carts near by and they weren't the hot dog vendors. She opened her eyes and took in her surroundings. There was a TV hanging in one corner. The ceiling, walls and floor were white and the bed she was in was a wimpy shade of blue. She was in the hospital. A doctor came into the room.

'God, he's hot!' she thought.

"Well, you're finally awake," he said, smiling. "I'm Dr. Purcato. Do you remember what happened?"

"Sure. I got attached in the alley."

"You have a broken leg, a bruised rib, and a bump on your head."

Gwen's lips formed a big O.

"Would you mind if I asked you some questions?" he asked.

"Fire away," Gwen told him.

"Name?"

"Guinevere Louisa Hungate. But you can call me Gwen."

"Where you do live?"

"The alley."

Then his lips formed an O.

"Birthday?"

"May 9, 1978."

"Parents?"

"Dead for six months."

The doctor seemed shocked but hid it a litle better.

"Any relatives or friends that we can call?"

"Nope. Both my parents were only children and their parents are dead."

He asked her a few more questions. Then he said,

"Kay, that was all I needed. A nurse will come in here in a bit. I guess I'll see you around." He turned and started to walk out of the room.

"Wait!" said Gwen. "How long am I going to be here?"

"Probably awhile since you're homeless and we can't put you back out there like this." He left the room.

Gwen sagged back against the pillows. She was going to be stuck inside forever. She sighed. There was nothing she could do. Gwen reached over to grab the remote. She stopped. It hurt like hell with a bruised rib. She inched her way over and managed to get the remote. Gwen grabbed it and turned on the TV, hoping the stupid hospital had MTV.
