Chapter 3

A few days later, Gwen was getting really bored in the hospital. One day, she convinced the nurse to let her go around the hospital on her crutches. She went to the maternity ward and looked at the babies. Then she went down to the children's ward. She was hopping along when she came to the playroom.

First, she heard the music, the bass of the song. She was hoping it was Lauryn Hill but she didn't think it would happen. She turned the corner and looked into the room.

They weren't playing the radio. There were five guys singing with a boom box backing them up. Making sure that they couldn't see her, she peeked in.

Three of the guys were okay looking but she would have been okay if they weren't there. The other two were gorgeous. One had curly, blond hair. His neck looked like a football player's, she noticed. Really thick. Before she could stop herself, Gwen giggled at the thought. She hadn't giggled much since she had been living on the street. The other one, who was closer to the door, looked in her direction when she giggled. She quickly moved a couple feet from the door. After a couple minutes, she looked back.

They were singing a song that she didn't recognize. But then again, it sounded like pop. They were harmonizing and then the guy who had looked in her direction started to sing lead.

"Why didn't I know?" he sang.
"Why didn't I show?
Would I have a chance?
Would I have a chance?
Oh, oh."

He harmonized with the others a bit. Then he sang,

"I drive myself crazy.
I lie awake. I drive myself crazy.
Drive myself crazy, thinking of you.
Made a mistake when I let you go baby,
I drive myself crazy."

The others were singing now, too, but to Gwen, his voice stood out.
"Drive myself crazy, crazy, crazy. Made a mistake. Drive myself crazy.
I drive myself crazy, wanting you the way that I do."

The song ender and the little kids started to clap. One of the kids came up to the guy that Gwen had been watching.

"That was really good, JC," the kid told him.

"Thanks, Julie," he said and then he hugged her.

Gwen felt her jaw drop. This guy was amazing.

"Okay guys, a couple songs and then we have to leave," said one of the other guys, who had his dark hair in dreads.

"What do you want to hear?" asked a blond with spiked hair.

"For the Girl!" said one little kid.

"Here We Go!" said another.

"Okay, we'll do those two," said the fifth guy. His hair was dyed bright red. JC started to sing, with the other harmonizing behind him.

"Hey. Oh, oh.
You drive a pretty car,
You know how fine you are and
Nobody need to say it, no way.
They love the clothes you wear.
They compliment you and I just love the way you play.
But the only thing you dream of
money can't buy for you.
And in my dreams I'll make your wish come true."

The other guys joined him.

"For the girl who has everything,
I bring you love. Yes, I bring you love.
Cause the girl who has everything can't get enough of my love."

JC started to sing by himself again and Gwen felt tears well up in her eyes. She wasn't supposed to be crying. Gwen didn't cry anymore. But it seemed as though JC was singing the song to her. The song descibed her old self perfectly.

When the song ended, Gwen went into the play room and clapped for them.
