Chapter 6

That night, Gwen had a tough time falling asleep. She couldn't wait to see JC the next day. No one had come to visit her in the hospital yet. She couldn't even remember the last time she had been this excited.

The next day, Gwen stayed in her room because she didn't know when JC would be coming and didn't want to miss him. She knew she was letting down the wall she had held up the last six months but couldn't help it. There was something special about JC. He showed up about 2:30.

"Hey," he said as he walked into the room. "Whatcha watchin'?"

"Studio 54. Don't worry. I've seen it about 6 times. I know it by heart."

"Really?"

"Why would I lie? So, where are your friends?"

"They're still going about to some kids' rooms. Except Joey. I saw him flirting with some nurse."

"Joey? Which one is he?"

JC looked at her, confused for a minute.

"Oh, that's right. I forgot that you don't know who we are."

"Why would I?" Now it was Gwen's turn to be confused.

"We're famous. Worldwide. We've had hit songs."

"Really? Sorry I didn't recognize you."

"That's okay. It feels nice. There aren't a lot of people who I can talk to and treat me regular."

"That must suck. When I lived in Miami, everyone at school treated me weird cause my parents were rich and I liked different music. I had to go to prep school with no guys!" JC laughed at the look on Gwen's face. "When I brought in my stereo and all my CDs, I had a ton, my roommate flipped. These girls were so deprived. Some didn't even know who Aerosmith was! I was the wild child at school."

"Really?" asked JC, his voice doubtful as he looked at her, lying in the hospital bed.

"Really; I was always sneaking out to see guys or go to a club. I mean, we were in Miami. If I didn't go partying at least twice a week, I felt lazy."

JC laughed at Gwen.

"How come you don't live in Miami anymore?"

Gwen fell silent and a look crossed her face that made JC wonder if he shouldn't have brought it up. But then Gwen swallowed hard and spoke.

"My parents died in a fire. All of our money was gone. I came to Orlando to look for a job in music but all I could get was McDonalds. Right now, I'm saving up for an apartment."

"You mean you're homeless?"

"Yes. God, you're not going to get weird on me, are you?"

"No."

"Good. Now tell me how you guys all met."

So JC launched into story that he had told a million times. Gwen laughed at some of the stories from the road.

"When did I get to meet your friends?" she asked him when he was done.

"They should be here pretty soon," he said, looking at the clock. "I told them 3."

No sooner had he said that than four guys came into the room.

"Speakin' of the devils," said JC.

"Hey! What's up?" asked the brunette. "JC, you should see this nurse that I met…."

"That's nice," said JC, rolling his eyes. "Guys, this is Gwen."

All of the guys said hi. Gwen found out all their names. Joey was the one who had met the nurse. Chris had dreads. Lance had spiky blond hair and Justin was the one with the big neck and curly hair. The guys stayed in Gwen's room for a long time and everyone got to know each other.
