"Staying in a hospital really sucks," she told him.
"Why?" asked JC. "You get waited on and all the cable you want."
"The food makes me yak and the nurses are almost always pissed. I wish I could stay with a friend but you guys are the only ones I have and I'm not going to stay at one of your places."
JC stuck out his lower lip and gave her puppy dog eyes. Then they lit up.
"You could stay with Kate."
"Who's that? Your girlfriend?"
"Ha," he laughed. "It's Chris's younger sister. You two would get along really good."
"What makes you say that?"
"Your personalities are very similar. And your taste in music."
"But would she want me to stay with her?"
"I don't see why not. She lives by herself right now and said that she was looking for a roommate. How about I call her?"
"Are you sure?"
JC nodded and took out his cell phone. He punched in a number.
"Hey Kate. This is JC," he said.
"Hi JC. Why are you calling?"
"Do I have to have a reason?" he asked. "Maybe I just wanted to talk to you."
"What do you want?"
"Since you're offering…I have this friend, Gwen, who's in the hospital and she wants to get out but she needs a place. Can she move in with you?"
"Why doesn't she go home?"
"She's homeless."
"What's she like?"
"Nice, once you get to know here," he told her. "She's got the same taste in music you do."
"Really? Well then, when does she want to move in?"
"As soon as possible."
"Sure. No problem. Whenever she's ready."
"Kay. I gotta go. I'll call you before she comes, okay?"
"Sure. Bye."
"Bye."
JC hung up the phone and grinned at Gwen.
"You have a home."
Instead of being happy and maybe hugging him, like JC had hoped, Gwen said,
"How am I going to pay the rent? I don't have a job."
"You want to be in the music business, right?" he asked.
"Yeah."
"I'll she what I can do." JC looked at his watch. "I've got rehearsal in five. But I'll stop at the desk and tell them you're leaving tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?"
"Why not? It's not like you have to pack or anything."
"Okay."
"Bye."
"Bye."
JC left the room but Gwen was still happy. Things were looking up.
