Chapter 6

They stayed at Brooke's for a couple of hours while Jonah slept. During the time he was asleep, JC and Brooke started to catch up on the last six years.

"I was actually at one of your concerts," Brooke told him.

"Really? You should have come around back so we could see each other," he said, pulling Brooke in against him.

Brooke laughed.

"JC, I was about seven months pregnant at the time. You probably wouldn't have even recognized me."

JC laughed. Then he turned serious.

"How come you kept the baby? I mean, you were raped."

JC felt Brooke tighten up when he said 'raped.' She pulled away from him and moved to the other end of the couch.

"I don't want to talk about it," she said in a cold voice.

"Okay," JC said slowly. He moved closer to Brooke. "I'm sorry."

Brooke didn't even look at him; she just got up off the couch.

"Do you want anything to drink?" she asked, turning to face the small kitchen. He dark hair blocked her face from JC.

"A soda?"

Brooke nodded and went into the kitchen. JC thought of following her in there but decided against it. She needed her space.

A few minutes later, Brooke came out of the kitchen and threw a Pepsi at JC.

"I'm going to check on Jonah," she told him without even glancing in his direction.

JC heard Brooke open the door and then could hear Jonah in his crib. A few minutes later, the two of them came back out.

"I have to get back home," JC said, standing up. He pulled on his coat. "I'll call you." He walked over to the door and Brooke followed. "Bye," he said, brushing his lips against her cheek.

"Bye, JC," Brooke replied. "Can you say bye Jonah?" she asked the baby. Jonah looked at JC, his face scrunched up. Then he let out an enormous wail. JC jumped at the sudden sound.

"Bye," he said again and then left the apartment. JC started to walk down the hallway. He didn't blame the kid for screaming. Jonah had probably wanted JC out of the apartment just as much as Brooke did.
