Chapter 5

"Kevin, he's not getting enough blood! He's not getting enough blood!"

"Nick! Wake up!" AJ could barely take any of it anymore.

"Kev, let's get outta here as fast as we can. I just got a really bad feeling. Okay?"

"Alright, I'll try to find Howie. Try waking up Brian and Nick."

Kevin ran back to where he found Nick and started looking there again. He strained his eyes to see for it was past midnight and all the bus electricity was out. The only light was the full moon and all the stars which seemed brighter than usually that shined through the shattered windows.

He listened for whimpers or any kind of noise like how he found Nick, but there was none. He dug around for a little while. After having no luck, he tried remembering who was in which bunk and where that bunk was. He remembered Nick on the top right, Brian on the bottom right, AJ in the back, he was ... where was his bunk? It had to be somewhere on the left, and that meant Howie would have the last bunk on the left side. He found his own bunk after crawling over the other two, and remembered his was on the top. Howie's bunk was on the bottom ... more digging.

He got on the floor in the front of the bus digging through the crap and finally found the broken posts. He followed them and he found the mattress. 'I wish there was some light...' There was something big on the bed and he couldn't move it to see if there was anyone there. He tried pushing it out of the way but cursed as he pulled back from under the bunk as something pinched his finger and it bled.

"AJ!!!" Come here!"

"What is it dude?" He yelled back, still trying to wake up Nick and Brian.

"I think I found something! I need help!"

A few moments later he could hear AJ struggling to get over the other two bunks that were blocking the hall.  After a minute or two he appeared by Kevin's side.

"What is it man?"

"I think I found Howie's bunk. There's something big and sharp on the bed and I can't get it off!"

"... Okay, let's see... Okay, who cares how much pain we go through? At least we'd be saving a life ... hopefully."

"Yeah, I guess you're right. Okay, on the count of three."

"One..."

" ... two..."

"... THREE!"

They both winced in pain as something sharp jammed into both of their hands. They picked it up and threw whatever it was behind them, rubbing their hands afterward.

"Damn that hurt Kev!"

"What'd I say?"

Kevin felt around the bunk. At first he felt nothing. Then he hit something solid.

"Bone - I think I found something."

"What?"

"I don't know. Hold on a sec..."

He felt around a little more. He could feel something wet, kind of gooey. He also felt a blanket. He pulled on it and could tell there was something on it. He kept pulling until it started getting hard.

"Kev, what the heck are you doing?"

He didn't answer. He gave the blanket one last tug, and they saw it - Howie. He fell off the bed with a thud.

AJ screamed.

Howie didn't look like himself from what they could see - all bloody, his clothes ripped up, and his face just didn't look normal. But I'm sure no one would look too normal when you fall off a cliff in the middle of nowhere and pass out buried under hundreds of pounds of crap.

"Perfect. How the hell are we gonna get outta here with three beat up unconscious bodies and find help?"

"Kevin, just wait a few more minutes to think of something."

But right after he said that they both heard a loud shrill scream.
