Chapter 8

AJ jumped up from his place on the ground next to Kevin from a weird shaking. He stood up and looked around. He saw a ray of light coming from a hole somewhere. Everything was pitch black. He walked over to the light and poked his finger through. Dirt fell out from where he touched the wall. He kicked it and half of it collapsed.

He stared out into the neverending forest they were in the night before. He looked at his watch. It read 7:24. He had had 1 hour of sleep. He caught sight of the cliff where the bus had fallen. He walked back to his friends and looked at them sleeping dreamlessly and restless, all dirty and bloody.

Everything started to shake. The ground shook, the walls shook, the ceiling shook. It felt like the whole cave was going to fall on top of him.

He ran over to the guys and shook them awake. Their eyes widened. Kevin picked up Howie and AJ helped Nick stand up. They all ran deep into the cave until the shaking stopped. They were probably half a mile from the mouth of the cave.

"Man, why did it just have to happen to us?" Nick complained.

"Be thankful you're alive," Kevin said.

"Riiiiiiight. And you think I'm thankful. The thing is, how are we gonna get outta here? It's dark!"

"It's not my fault you're still scared of the dark Nick. All we have to do is walk back the way we came, get out of the cave and get help," Kevin said.

They walked and walked and walked. Finally they reached the clearing they were first in.

"Uh-huh. Right Kevin. We're just gonna walk right out of here and go home. It isn't always that easy," Nick said, looking at the huge wall of mud where the mouth of the cave used to be.

"We need lights," AJ said, trying to see in the dark. He succeeded a little. He walked around and around in a circle, pacing and thinking.

"Guys, let's just walk deep into the cave. There's got to be a way out somewhere."

"Oh my God!" Nick said, a slight look of satisfaction on his face. "Guys, I heard a story about this place a long time ago from one of the elderly people my Mom and I used to take care of."

"Let's here it!" Kevin urged.

"Well, during the Cold War in the forties there were bomb threats to blow up the world. So they built these really cool tunnels underground to keep people safe, you know, bomb shelters. And after nothing happened, it became a party place. Kids used to sneak down into the tunnels and party all night long. But then they closed them up because kids started dying mysteriously."

"Really. That's very believable Nick. But one: we're not underground. Two: the tunnels were built in the 30's, they might have caved in by now. Three: this is a cave, not a tunnel," AJ stated out, counting one, two, and three on his fingers as he said them.

Nick looked disappointed. "Oh. Well, these might be tunnels, or it could lead to a passageway to one of them. I remember the guy saying he partied there once, and there was a cool cave by a cliff was where most kids got in."

"Well, we don't have any other choice but to explore," AJ said.

Nick started jumping up and down. But stopped as soon as he felt his leg. "OWWWWWW!!!"

Kevin and AJ laughed. Brian was sitting in a corner sleeping and Howie was laying beside him.

"Let's explore!" Nick yelled.
