Chapter 9

They somehow managed to wake Brian up.

"Guys, we still need light," AJ pointed out.

"Brian is the only one who knows how to make torches," Kevin said.

They looked at Brian. He didn't seem to notice they were staring at him. He looked somewhere into space, looking very frightened.

"Okay, that's out of the question," Kevin sighed.

"But maybe I can remember..." Nick said thoughtfully. He ran over to AJ and reached into his jeans pocket.

"Nick, what the hell are you doing?" AJ asked impatiently.

"Gettin some light." He pulled a lighter out of AJ's huge jeans pocket.

Kevin looked at AJ. "I thought you quit smoking years ago."

"I did. I just have a little smoke here and there."

"Whatever. After this, you are gonna be in dead trouble."

Nick flicked the lighter on and they looked around them. It was a normal looking cave. Dirt walls, dirty, gloomy.

"So we have to walk for miles and miles using a tiny lighter?" AJ whined.

Nick shrugged. They started walking down the cave. It all looked the same. But it wasn't like a tunnel. It just went back and back and back. No turns.

"I gotta rest," Kevin said. "Howie suddenly feels like he's gained hundreds of pounds."

Kevin, AJ, Brian, and Howie laid down on the dirty ground for a while. Nick just stood there. AJ got up and started to study the stuff around him.

Nick called to them, "Guys, I'm gonna go a little further ahead. Catch up with me later. Here's the lighter." He tossed the lighter to AJ.

Nick walked away from his friends, their voices draining out from his head. He couldn't see a thing, and wished someone else had another lighter or something. He saw a turn and got excited. 'Maybe this is the opening to the passage!'

He walked into it, but it seemed hotter in this one. A moist, stuffy feeling to it. And it smelled of... something really nasty. Nick stopped after a while and gazed around in the dark.

"I wonder if the guys are looking for me..." he asked himself.

He walked a few more steps - And landed on something above the ground. He looked down, but it was pitch black. He did a little jump and whatever it was broke through and he started falling.... again.
