Chapter 10

The MTV Music Awards were the following month. Ariana came as Nick's date. She sat in the audience and clapped and cheered for her boyfriend as his group performed and won awards.

Nick glanced over at Ariana as he danced to Larger Than Life. She was sitting there, smiling broadly. How had he ever gotten such a good woman? But there was one thing he knew for sure. He was falling in love with her.

A few weeks later, Ariana was over at Nick's house. They had just finished watching a movie on TV and Ariana stood up to stretch.

"I'm in love with you," Nick blurted out.

Ariana froze. "No, you're not."

"Yes I am," Nick told her, standing up.

"No, you're not!" she told him. "Nick, I don't want to hear it. I'm going home."

"Ariana, you have got to listen to me," Nick told her, taking her in his arms. He was pleading with her. "I'm in love with you."

She opened her mouth to protest but Nick cut her off.

"Let me finish. I used to think that the song The Rose was right. You know, when it says that love is for the lucky. I didn't think that I would ever be that lucky. I would have never guessed that I would find my soulmate. But I have. And I've found it in you."

"No, you haven't Nick," she told him, wriggling out of his grasp. She crossed her arms over her chest and looked away from him.

"Yes, I have."

"No!" she screamed. "NO! There is no way you could have found your soulmate in me. There is no way that you can be in love with me. We can not be in love!" She was practically hysterical and felt tears threatening at her eyes.

"Why not?" he asked gently. He touched her arm and she slapped him away.

"Nick, I was not supposed to fall in love with you. I came down here to do a job. That was to make you happy and then…"

"But you have made me happy. I've never been this happy in my life."

"Nick, don't say that," she begged. "After you were okay, I was supposed to leave. I was supposed to go back up there and forget about you."

"For get about me? One minute. Go back up where?"

Arian froze when she realized that it had slipped out. Silently, she pointed heavenly.

"You're going up north?" he asked, confused. "Where? To Tennessee?"

"No Nick! You don't understand. I wasn't supposed to fall in love with you. You weren't supposed to fall in love with me. We can't be in love!"

"Why?"

"We're not supposed to, okay?! Can't you just leave it at that?"

"No. Why aren't we supposed to fall in love?"

"Angels and mortals aren't allowed to fall in love!" she screamed and started to sob.

"Angels and mortals? You mean, you're an…"

"Angel. Yes, and I wasn't supposed to fall in love with you. Oh, God, I'm going to be in so much trouble."

"But you did, didn't you?"

He reached out and touched Ariana's arm. This time, she didn't slap him away. Her energy had been drained from her. He wrapped his arms around her in attempt to comfort her.

"Can't you do something to become mortal?" he asked softly. "I say a movie where the angel jumped off a tall building and became mortal."

Ariana shook her head and turned around in Nick's arms to look at him.

"It's doesn't work that way," she said, sniffing. "I can't get out of being an angel. I always have been an angel and always will be."

"After I die and go to heaven, is there any chance we can be together?"

"I don't know, baby. I don't know."

nick nodded and pulled her in closer. He breathed in her soft scent of berries. Everything about Ariana was soft. Her voice, her hair, her skin, her touch. The way she would whisper his name after he had kissed her.

"When do you have to leave?"

"Soon."

"How soon?"

"It could be a matter of minutes."

He nodded and just held her in his arms, gently swaying her to the song playing in his head.

"Ariana," he whispered nervously, "is there anyway I could make love to you before you go?" There was nothing he wanted more than to show her just how much he loved her.

"No," she whispered.

Nick felt tears threatening at his own eyes as he held her against him.

Then he noticed a golden light coming from the end of the hall. Ariana noticed it too and Nick felt her grip tighten around him.

"Do you have to go?" he asked.

"Yes."

"Nick," she said in her soft voice.

She tilted her face up to his and he looked down. Their lips brushed and the kiss continued. It was far more intimate than any other kiss Nick had ever know. Words couldn't describe it.

"Nick," she said again, after the kiss was over.

"Shhh," he said and untangled himself from her. He gave her a gentle push towards the light. "Please, just go."

Ariana started to walk towards the light. It illuminated her entirely and she really did look like an angel. Every few steps, she'd look back at him but Nick always gestured for her to keep going.

'I will not cry,' he told himself. 'I will not cry.'

But when she looked back at him for the last time and waved, he broke down and cried. Why did she have to go? God, he was going to miss her. For one last chance, he prayed to God to let Ariana stay with him but it didn't happen. He opened his eyes in time to see the light swallow her up and she was gone. Forever.
