Chapter 2

Fourty-five minutes later, Nick had been at the club for thirty minutes. What had he been thinking, giving those two an hour? Oh well. Then he noticed a girl walking towards him. Pretty. Blond. Wild hair.

"Hi," she said and leaned against the wall.

"Hi," said Nick. She looked him up and down and smiled a devilish smile.

"What's your name?"

"Nick."

"Nick, I'm Clover. I know, I know. My parents were hippies. Do you like to have fun?"

"Yeah," he said slowly.

She reached into her pocket as Nick watched with wide eyes. She pulled something out and offered it to Nick.

"You wanna go out back?" she asked.

Nick looked at Clover's hand. A joint. He could already see the tabloid headline: 'Pop star turned druggie'.

"No thanks." He shook his head and turned into the crowd. He ran into another girl who started to yell and him but instead ask him to dance. He accepted. It sure didn't hurt to have All-American looks.

A few minutes later, the song had ended and Nick went off in search off another girl. Then he found Amanda with AJ close behind.

"Hi Nick," she said, her voice sounding clipped.

"Hi. What's up?"

"Your friend said he didn't like my outfit."

Nick looked quickly at Amanda's outfit, knowing if he looked too long, AJ would pound him. It was a red sweater and black pants that showed off her every curve.

"He didn't like it?" Nick asked, shocked.

"She didn't give me a chance to finish," AJ told him. "I don't like. I love it and I think she looks absolutely amazing in it." AJ laid one hand on Amanda's shoulder.

"Really?" she asked, turning around. AJ nodded and Nick left the two of them alone.

He headed in no particular direction and then noticed a girl sitting at the bar. She was chewing on a straw, looking very innocent. She had dark, curly hair and an ivory complexion. He walked over and sat down next to her.

"Hi," he said, trying to use the seductive voice he had heard AJ use countless times. It didn't come out right.

"Hi," the woman said. It took all of Nick's self control not to cover his ears. Her voice sounded like a mix of Janice from Friends and Karen from Will and Grace. Not pleasant. 'What she sounds like isn't important,' he thought.

"What's your name?" he asked, focusing on her eyes. He had heard girls liked it when guys looked into their eyes.

"Melaine Winters," she said and looked away from him.

"I'm Nick Carter," he told her, reaching out to shake her hand. She shook his and Nick couldn't help but notice what large hands she had. Man hands.

'It's like Seinfeld is coming to life,' he thought. That was okay. Hands don't matter.

"I feel like I've seen you before," Melanie told him.

"That's possible. Do you watch MTV a lot?"

She looked at him like he had just suggested that they fly to the moon.

"I don't own a TV. Do you know what signals the government sends through those things? They're trying to take control of us all!" she said, going into hysterics.

'Okay,' thought Nick. 'Maybe I should just back away.'

He got up and started to back away.

"Where are you going?" she asked.

"Bathroom," he told her. Nick told her and ran.

After had had gotten lost in the crowd, he decided to go home. He left the club and walked to his car. It was pouring now. He got in and headed home.
