Epilogue

Nick just sat there and stared at the sup of Coke that sat on the table in front of him. He stirred it with the straw and watched the ice cubes circle around the cup. Laughter surrounded him but he didn't even notice. His thoughts were filled with Ariana. It was exactly one year since Ariana had left him.

What was he doing here? He didn't even know. Brian had talked him into it but he should have turned him down.

"Brian, I'm going home. I'm just not up to this," he told him.

"Are you sure?"

"Positive. You can stay. I just need to be alone."

Brian nodded and turned back to the comedian.

Nick grabbed the Coke and swallowed it all in one gulp. He threw down some money, got up, and pulled on his coat. Then he walked out.

Later, at home that night, Nick was laying all alone in his bed. The lights were off and the only light in the room came from the moon and his alarm clock.

He yearned to have Ariana next to him. He wanted to fell her next to him again. She had never been next to him in bed but he had imaged what it would feel like. It would feel good; he knew that.

When he closed his eyes, he could still see her, and hear her voice and remember what she felt like. It was so easy to force himself to forget her during the day. But at night, when he was all alone in his room, the memories came back and it would almost bring him to tears.

So he was laying there, listening to the sounds that didn't exist.

I love you.

Nick shot up in bed and scanned the room. There was no one there. He was about to relax when he felt arms wrap around him.

"Who's there?" he whispered.

"You know who it is," came the soft reply.

Nick turned around. There she was. It looked like she wasn't even there, sort of like a hologram.

"What are you doing here?"

"I came to check up on you. See how you're doing."

"Terrible," he told her. "I'm doing terrible without you. Please come back. I need you."

But she was shaking her head.

"No Nick. I can't come back and you can't come to me. At least, not yet."

"Can I ever see you again?"

"Every night, look at the North Star. I'll be there."

Nick started to say something but he realized that she was gone, leaving one last message.

I love you.
