The Hardest Thing

It's the hardest thing
I'll ever have to do, To look you in the eye
And tell you I don't love you
It's the hardest thing, I'll ever have to lie
To show no emotion, When you start to cry
I can't let you see what you mean to me
When my hands are tied, And my hearts not free, We're not meant to be
It's the hardest thing, I'll ever had to do
To turn around and walk away, pretending I don't love you.

"It's over," he said. "It has to be. I can't keep doing this. Lori's been faithful and, anyway, I don't really love you. I love Lori."

His reflection looked back at him. He sighed. How had he gotten into this mess?

He had been dating Lori for over four months when he had met Jessica. She had been hired to work doing promotional stuff on the tour. He had saved her from a friend's flirting on the first dat but that had lead to them flirting with each other.

The worst part was that he would sometimes forget about Lori when he was with Jessica until his cell phone would interrupt their conversation with its shrill ring. Then he would answer it and it would be Lori. He would turn bright red and then leave the room.

One night he had asked Jessica to go out with him. He hadn't known why he did it and wanted to take it back the moment he had asked. But then Jessica had said yes. She hadn't known about Lori.

That was the way he had intended to keep it. But that night, when Jessica and him were walking down the beach, he stopped, and started to kiss Jessica. She had kissed him back with the same passion. Then the kiss had ended as suddenly as it began.

"I shouldn't be doing this," he said, running his fingers threw his hair. He started walking down the beach, away from Jessica. She came after him and grabbed his arm, forcing him to look at her.

"What's wrong?"

"Jessica, I shouldn't be doing this. I shouldn't have done any of this. I shouldn't have flirted with you, or asked you out, or kissed you, or," he rambled on and on.

"Why?"

"I have a girlfriend. A really good girlfriend. I love her."

"If you love her, why would you have flirted with me, or asked me out or kissed me? That had to mean something."

He looked at her and she returned his gaze. He knew she was right. Once again, he took her in his arms and started to kiss her.

That had been four months ago and they were still seeing each other without the knowledge of Lori even though they were back in Florida.

But he had decided that he had to be faithful to Lori. Which meant breaking up with Jessica. Tonight was the nigh. He was meeting Jessica at the beach at 7 and Lori at a resturant at 8.

He got to the beach a little late. He parked his truck and headed down to the water, where he knew Jessica would be waiting.

"I missed you!" she said when she saw him. Jessica threw her arms around his neck and tried to kiss him. He moved his head.

"What's wrong?" she asked, stepping back to study his face.

He looked away from her stare knowing he would lose it if he looked at her.

"Jessica, its over," he said, looking at her eyebrows instead of in the eyes. She had perfect eyebrows.

"What?" she whispered. Her voice barely came out.

"Its over. I can't keep doing this to Lori. I have to be faithful. I was dating Lori first, before you came, a long time. I love her," he lied threw his teeth.

He turned around on his heel and walked back up the sandy beach. He could hear Jessica crying behind him. First, it was small, almost like whimpering. Then the crying became louder and louder. First, she was sobbing and then almost wailing. But he forced himself to keep walking. He wanted to go running back there and pick Jessica up in his arms and hug her and kiss her and never let her go and tell her that is was really her that he loved. Tell her that he had loved her ever since he had first seen her. But he kept going.

When he arrived at the resturant, Lori was already there.

"Hi, honey," she said, pecking him on the cheek.

All he did was nod. They sat down at the table and he looked out the window.

The resturant was only a couple of miles from where he had ended it with Jessica. And he could now see her, walking along the shoreline with her sandles in one hand. She looked up towards the window, as if she knew that he was there. He jerked his head away from the window.

"You ok?"

"Fine," he said swallowing the lump in his throat. "Just fine."
