Chapter 5

"Jeez," Nick commented. "Your dog hid himself good." He put two fingers in his mouth and whistled piercingly.

Like he’s going to respond to that obnoxious sound, I thought. I was getting tired of waiting for Tucker to decide to make his entrance. "I know!" I exclaimed. "TUCKER, FRONT!!" Hearing his favorite command, Tucker barreled out of the bush, through Nick’s legs and sat primly in front of me. "Oh, good boy!" I praised, smiling broadly. I hooked his leash on him and stood. "Thank you so much for your help, Nick." I started to run off into the brush, but he grabbed my shoulder.

"Don’t I even get to see who I was looking for?" he inquired with an urbane, lop-sided grin. My resolution--and knees--began to lose hold.

Lucy, get out of there! Grandpa pleaded desperately. Don’t fall in love, whatever you do! Please! I smiled and knelt down to Tucker.

"All right. I guess you can pet the trouble." Nick bent down next to me and scratched Tucker behind the ears. Tucker was loving every minute of it. He was enjoying it so much so that he wriggled right up to Nick and started kissing him. "I think you’ve got a friend," I grinned.

Nick looked up. "I was hoping I did," he murmured, his beautiful blue eyes penetrating into mine.

No! Lucy!! He kissed me.
