Chapter 1

I surveyed the office as I entered. One wall was full of filing cabinets and another had a bookcase. There was desk in one corner which held a bunch of files. There was also a couch against the wall that had a large window in it. I was the youngest leader of the Night Beings in the history of the world, being only 166 years old. Not that you can tell; I look about 25 in human age and I'll never look older. Most leaders didn't start until they were about 215 and some even older.

I should probably explain what I'm talking about. First off, me. I'm the new leader of the Night Beings; the last one just recently died at the age of 1026. Only witches can be leaders of the Night Beings. The most powerful witch becomes the leader.

The world of Night Beings exists right on planet Earth, unknown to mortals. It is made up of witches, werewolves, phantoms, vampires, mummies that are actually only half dead-sorta alive, and two-minders. I'm sure you know what the first ones are. They've been all over horror films and the numbers of pretenders intensifies during what mortals call Halloween. Two-minders you've probably never heard of. At least by name.

I'm sure you've heard of Dr. Jeckal and Mr. Hyde, though. A two-minder is like that but they don't take any special potion or anything. They just decided what they want to be: kind or violent. The Night Being two-minders only use the violent side when we fight the Dark Beings, who are our enemies.

I sat down at the desk and look around the room. Then I turned on the computer.

"Jezebel," said the voice of Meredith, the last leader. She had recorded this before her death. "I have left a list of instructions for you to follow when you begin your leadership. The first one you have already started. You have to read the files and books on all of our people." Then a list popped up on the screen of all the files and books I had to read. It was a long list but I had already started to read about two years ago, when Meredith had found out that she was going to die. The leaders always get a warming so they can pick their replacement and they can start reading. Now I would be in charge of keeping everything up to date.

I was tired and wanted to be home soon. I decided to read something easy. I scanned the list and picked one. I walked over to the bookcase and pulled out a leather bound book. I sat down on the couch and started to read.
