When I woke up, I was in Meredith's office lying on the couch. Rashel was sitting in a chair next to me and I could see David, her One and a werewolf, standing at the doorway.
"What happened?" I asked, sitting up quickly. The room swarmed and I laid back down. Everything stopped moving.
"I don't know if I should be the one to tell you," Rashel said. "David, go get Meredith." David left the room.
"Well, can you tell me why you're here?"
"I was needed to hypnotize you." Rashel is the group's strongest hypnotizier so that made sense.
"Why?"
"So you wouldn't feel the pain."
"I'm glad to see you awake," Meredith said, entering the room. "You're not in any pain?"
"No. Can you tell me what happened?"
"Yes." Meredith gestured for Rashel and David to leave the room. She waited until the door was closed before she said anything.
"Before I answer any of your questions, I need to ask you one," she said, sitting down on the chair Rashel had been occupying. "After, or when, the pain hit, hard, did you see anything unusual?"
"Yes," I answered slowly. "I saw a sidewalk and then Howie, remember, from…"
"Yes, I remember." Of course, she did; Meredith remembered everything.
"I saw Howie and AJ's mom. Then Howie said 'Man, what's wrong?' and then I was back here."
Meredith was nodding which gave me no clue to what had happened.
"So what happened?"
"Kevin had his appendix removed. He had a lot of stomach pains for a few days."
"Hey, so did I."
"Exactly."
"What do you mean? The only people that can feel another's pain are…" My voice faded off at realization.
"Soulmates," Meredith finished. "Kevin is your soulmate."
"What?" I asked, shocked. "Kevin? Kevin is my soulmate?"
I was surprised. If Tajae had been there, she would have said something like: 'Yes. Kevin. Tall, dark, handsome, mysterious, perfect guy. Kevin.'
"Yes," Meredith said. "Are you telling me you had no idea?"
"Yes," I said first and then thought about it. Maybe I did know. "Okay. I might have had a clue that Kevin was my soulmates." I paused, thinking this over. "How did you know?"
"AJ," she said as though it explained everything.
"AJ?"
"When you were training the guys, do you remember the day when AJ read your and Kevin's minds at the same time?" I nodded and I pieced everything together.
"Does Kevin know?" I asked.
"I don't believe so. Do you want me to send you to him?" I nodded. "Don't you want to fix yourself up a bit?" she asked, giving me a critical eye.
"Why?" I said, glancing down at my usual jeans and tee shirt.
"If something happens, don't you want to be dressed nice?"
"What would happen?" I asked. Then it hit. I gave Meredith a look. "Mere, it's not like I'm going to say 'I'm your One' and Kevin's going to say 'Can I make love to you?' I won't happen. Anyway, isn't he still in the hospital?"
Meredith raised one eyebrow. "It's happened before," was all she said. "And no, he's not in the hospital. And he's healed." That was expected; Beings heal quickly. "He got out yesterday," Meredith continued.
"Yesterday?"
"Rashle put you under a little too long. Are you sure you don't want to change?"
"I'm sure. Just send me. Anyway, this is easier to get off than a dress."
Meredith nodded and sent me to see my soulmate.
