A Day in the Life of a Ma'ili First Grader
On a typical day, we do Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Computers and Science.
We have Music, Drama, Kupuna(Hawaiian Studies), Health, Physical Education or Art weekly.
Language Arts 
For Literacy, we have a Balanced Language Program. We do Morning Message, Journals, Calendar, Current Events and Sharing. We have a Silver-Burdett Ginn Literature Series called Literature Works. We use SRA1s Reading Mastery /Direct Instruction. We learn Reading Strategies in whole group, small group and one-to one instruction. B2 has a classroom library that includes many Wright and Rugby Books. We like to visit the School Library. B2 loves Reading!
Math
We use the Addison-Wesley Math Series. We frequently use math manipulatives. Unifix
Cubes, geo boards, bear counters and Cuisinaire Rods help us learn math concepts.
Social Studies
We use the Steck-Vaughn's Homes and Neighborhoods textbook. For current events we use Weekly Reader and the Honolulu Advertiser for current events. We learn Hawaiiana from Kupuna Lewis and from our Field Trip to Lanikohonua. We learn about native plants, sing songs and even get a chance to play the Ike ike (Bamboo Tubes).
Science
We study plant and animals and the world around us! We use the DASH Program and Project Ohi'a in the classroom. We study ocean animals. We love learning about dolphins, whales and turtles! We have oceans of fun at Ma'ili!
Art
We make leaf prints, clay sculptures and ceramics! We love drawing and painting too!
Technology
At Ma'ili we use computers in class, at the Macintosh Multimedia Lab as well as in the Library Literacy Lab. This year we made a multimedia Slide Show about our Fifth Grade Buddies using Kid Pix.
