On Saturday November 15th The Mudman (Kevan Scott) Presented: 2001 Grammy Award Winner Dave Alvin with Rick Shea and Oahu's own guitar wizard Ledward Kaapana at the Hawaiian Hut. Almost unbelievably, this was Dave Alvin's Hawaii Debut. Alvin's eclectic mix of folk, blues and country combined with exquisite guitarmanship has garnered him a steadfast following amongst "roots" music fans worldwide. His songs of the West have been likened to those of Springsteen's New Jersey and Lou Reed's New York. Bob Dylan asked him to warm up his 1998 tour. Richard Thompson, a Honolulu favorite, has referred to Alvin as "one of the world's greatest songwriters".
Along with his brother Phil, Dave was frontman for the roots-rock band The Blasters and was also a member of hard edged L.A. rockers, X. Alvin's accompanist, Rick Shea, delighted the crowds of Honolulu February 15, 2003 with his vocals, guitar and songwriting skills. (See some pictures from that night at Anna's.) Unfortunately, I wasn't able to concentrate on taking as many pictures as I would have liked to because I was being hassled about the flash on my camera, even though there were several other photographers in the audience who were also using their flashes (out of neccessity).
