Kat smiled as she absorbed the hustle and bustle of Sweetwater. While she enjoyed the peace of the ranch, she had to admit she missed the noise of the city. She sighed at the thought of home, everything she loved about it, and everything that wasn't there anymore.
Lost in thought, Kat walked right into a petite blond coming out of a shop. Kat dropped the package that Lou had sent her for in an effort to avoid Tomkins store.
"Excuse me." Both women said apologetically, as they smiled meekly at each other.
"I'm sorry, I wasn't paying attention." Kat said as she bent down to pick up the package.
"It's alright." The blond smiled as Kat stood up again. The blond then looked at Kat strangely. "New in town?"
"Just visiting." Kat nodded.
"I thought so." Jen nodded back. "My father owns the general store, so I know everyone in town."
Kat froze and tried to keep a straight face. This was Jen! Kat sized up the woman before her, and immediately understood why Buck had fallen in love with her. She was a little shorter than Kat, with a slim, muscular build, long blond hair, blue eyes and pale skin. Kat thought she was very beautiful.
"Who are you visiting?" Jen asked, breaking into Kat's assessment.
Kat thought quickly. She wasn't in the mood for small talk with this woman of all people. If she told Jen who she was really visiting, that would lead to more questions.
"I'm staying with Marshal Hunter." Kat answered plainly. It was the truth. That's whom she was staying with, although not whom she was visiting.
"Oh!" Jen exclaimed happily. "I'm good friends with everyone out there."
Kat just smiled and acted pleasantly surprised.
A young man approached the two women then. He placed an arm around Jen's waist and planted a light kiss on her forehead. He was about Buck's size, with light brown hair and green eyes. He had glasses and was wearing a suit. He looked as opposite from Buck as anyone could get.
Kat was slightly surprised. Lou had told Kat about Buck's proposal. So this man was why Jen had refused Buck. Kat wondered if Buck knew. Her dislike for Jen was increasing by the moment.
"Hello dear." Jen smiled happily as she snuggled against the man's chest. "Matthew this is… I'm sorry, I didn't get your name."
"Kat Schmidt." Kat smiled stiffly.
"Well, I'm Jenny Tomkins and this is my fiancé Matthew Higgins."
"Pleased to meet you." Kat said cordially. She couldn't believe this woman. Jen had Buck's heart in her hand, and she had obviously completely crushed it. If Buck even knew. Kat realized she no longer hated this woman because Buck loved her. She hated Jen for what she was doing to Buck.
"I should probably be going." Kat said quickly as she looked down at her pocket watch. "It was nice to meet you."
"Where did you get that?" Jen asked, nodding toward the watch.
"My mother." Kat answered plainly, just wanting to get away from the happy couple that was causing Buck and her so much pain.
"Where did Buck get his?" Jen asked suspiciously.
Kat stiffened. Jen was apparently connecting Kat and Buck. The matching watches had given them away. Jen knowing about the watch also meant that Buck had seen her before he left.
"From my father." Kat answered, knowing things were building to a confrontation if Jen kept asking questions.
"Why?" Jen asked, confused. She had worked her way out of Matthew's embrace and was standing directly in front of Kat.
"Because Buck is a good man who saved my life." Kat answered, becoming more agitated by the moment.
"Is that what 'My Savior' means?" Jen asked, referring to the inscription she had seen in Buck's watch.
"It means something you'll never understand." Kat said calmly but menacingly, taking a step closer to Jen. "The watches belonged to two people that loved each other."
Jen looked as if she had been slapped. What did this woman possibly know about her?
"Buck saved my life, and he doesn't deserve to have you treat him the way you do!" Kat continued firing at Jen. The look on the girl's face giving her all the encouragement she needed to let her anger loose.
"That's none of your business." Jen said coldly.
"It's my business because I love him!" Kat argued. "He's the reason I came to Sweetwater."
Jen stood there not knowing what to do. She looked hurt and betrayed.
Kat saw the look on Jen's face and felt triumphant. It was obvious Jen had no prior knowledge of Kat. Kat immediately knew Buck had kept her existence as much a secret from Jen as he had kept Jen a secret from her.
"He made it my business when he brought it into our bed." Kat finished harshly, driving the stake into Jen's heart.
Lou approached just in time to hear Kat's statement. She had seen Jen and Kat talking and hoped to get to the pair before things exploded. Lou winced as she realized it was too late.
"What?" Jen asked in disbelief. She looked like she'd just had the wind knocked out of her.
"That's right." Kat said victoriously. "You hurt him so badly he turned to another woman."
"Whore!" Jen shot at Kat venomously, her mind racing to quickly to come up with anything better.
Kat answered Jen's statement with a hard slap across the woman's cheek.
"Don't ever call a woman who knows she wants just one man a whore." Kat said as she turned on her heel and walked away.
