Kat woke smiling; feeling Buck's strong arms around her. She had never felt safer, and couldn't remember the last time she had been happier. She had been right, coming to Sweetwater and seeing Buck had been exactly what she needed to find where she belonged. There had been no one in her life since she had met Buck, and after last night, she was sure he still felt the same way about her.
She watched him sleeping peacefully, and sighed happily. He was snoring slightly and softly mumbling something. She smiled wider, sure he was dreaming about her, as she had dreamt about him all night.
Her smile quickly faded though as she made out what he was mumbling.
"Jen." Buck sighed in his sleep and pulled Kat closer to him.
Kat looked as though someone had slapped her as she violently wriggled out of Buck's embrace and sat on the bed staring at him.
Buck started at the sudden movement next to him. He sat straight up, panicked something was wrong. His face calmed as he took in his surroundings and recalled the night before.
"Good morning." He smiled at Kat as he reached his hand toward her face.
Kat recoiled as if Buck had come at her violently.
"What's wrong?" Buck asked, confused by her reaction.
"Who's Jen?" Kat asked coldly, her eyes burning into Buck.
"What?" Buck asked, looking guilty. There was no way Kat could possibly know about Jen. But, somehow she did, and Buck knew he had to be the only one who could have told her.
"You said her name while you were sleeping." Kat answered frigidly. She felt so stupid for thinking about Buck the way she had been when he called the woman's name.
Buck cursed himself for giving away his own secret. He knew Kat had a right to know about Jen, but this definitely not the way he had wanted to tell her. He knew he should have told her the minute she had kissed him, but everything had happened so fast, and Kat had been so happy. Buck stopped himself. He knew he was only making excuses.
"Someone I thought I knew." Buck answered honestly, watching Kat's reaction closely.
"Someone you love." Kat answered coldly, anger and hurt flashing in her eyes.
"I always will." Buck said softly. "But it wasn't right for us."
Kat took a deep breath and hugged her knees to her chest. Buck watched her eyes fly toward the ceiling, and he knew she was crying.
"I'm sorry." Buck said remorsefully after a few moments.
Kat mulled Buck's revelation over in her mind. She was angry at Buck for not being honest with her. But she was also furious with herself for expecting so much so quickly. She took a deep breath, looked into Buck's eyes and knew she couldn't be mad at him. Last night was as much her fault as it was his.
"Don't apologize for what isn't your fault." Kat said sincerely. "You can't help it."
"But I shouldn't have let last night happen when she's still in my heart." Buck said contritely. He hung his head, sorry he had caused Kat so much pain.
"She'll always be there." Kat said knowingly. "Just like Jake will always be in mine."
Buck's head snapped up to look at Kat. He was shocked to hear her ex-fiancé's name in such a positive light.
"I know it sounds crazy." Kat admitted. "But he was my first love. None of the things he did to me will ever change that."
In a way, Buck understood. No matter what Jen decided or how much she hurt him, she would always have a special place in his heart.
Buck looked into Kat's eyes, and knew she understood him. He wrapped his arms around her gently, and was relieved when she didn't pull away from him.
Kat snuggled against his chest comfortably. Once again, Kat knew she was probably crazy, but she loved this man. Even if he could never love her, she would love him forever.
