How To Take Over The World: The History Of Yellow Five (pt. 1)

by Matt Bell

It may be hard to believe, but the mighty juggernaut of a band known as Yellow Five, was initially, merely an inside joke between Me and Nathan. We were going to go by the name Jest, and the idea was for Ben Bernard (who bought a guitar but never really played) and Me (who didnąt even own a guitar at the time), to play guitars,Nathan to play bass, Babak as the DJ (what the hell were we thinking?) and Jennifer Minton singing. As we slowly (and I mean slowly) developed and began to actually make "music", we realized that we were missing an important link. A drummer. This is where young Will Reiss comes into the picture. As time passed, somehow Ben and Babak just kinda stopped being in the band. We changed our name to Fuzz, played with a guy named Jeff Dodge, and in addition to the regular line-up of Me, Nay, Will and Jenn, played our first show at Ben Bernard's birthday party. As expected, it was the single worst concert ever. The set-list for the night included the painfully poppy "Where Do We Go From Here?", the most boring song ever, "Overlooked", a cover of the Gloria Gaynor song "I Will Survive", and a cover of a Thin Lizzy song, "Dancing In the Moonlight". Chris Wood sat in on drums, which is likey the only positive thing about the whole show. We sucked like anal warts, and a few people had pity on us, and said it wasnąt too bad. Nonetheless, we took most of the summer off, wrote some new stuff, changed guitar players a few more times, and began playing shows again during the fall of our junior year. We played Guido's, Bazaar, and the other usual spots for lame high school bands to play, including a rare 18+ performance at Jackąs Guitar Bar with an audience of about 12 people (the bands families) . We were happy, but after a while, things began to get monotonous. It seemed like we werenąt really going anywhere with what we had, and we figured it was time to do something about it. Some changes were made in the line-up during the summer after our junior year, and in came Tio Pistilli and Amanda Hardaway, our new singers. After playing one show at Coleman Park, we did what would change the course of history for this little band. We added a skinny white boy with an afro to the Yellow Five family. Kelby Caldwell would be the new lead guitarist. At the same time, we changed our name to Yellow Five, and the rest, as they say, is history. Recently, weąve added another new face to the y5 entourage. Raven Hardison has taken over the duties of backup vocals. And now things are looking up. We've started getting better shows, (8th Day, Indienet, 328, etc.) started getting a little press, built a fan base, and have won some local contests. Weąre in the process of putting out our first CD, and weąre putting together a summer tour of the southeast. This leads us to where we are now. What the future has in store, we don't know. For now, we'll just keep making it rain.
