Name: Jane Lindley
Place and Date of Birth: London, 1650
Age: 354
Appears: In her twenties
Status: Vampire
Creator: Witchcraft
Character background: Born Jane Anne Poole, she started her life as the daughter of a whore.
Luckily for the Poole women, they were born with enough good looks to
be courted by the rich and powerful men of England. Though, despite
the rank and wealth of their clients, they were still whores. Jane was
her mother's third daughter. Her father could have been any number of
men, though Jane's mother liked to tell a romantic tale about a
handsome young nobleman who had taken to her bed before dying in King
Charles II's rebellion. But, truth be told, it was likely a lie.
As Jane grew older, she fell into what had become the 'family
profession' herself. Of her mother's three daughters, she was the most
beautiful and had more than enough customers to keep her in nice
things. It was a good life and if Jane lacked for romantic love, she
more than made up for it in physical comfort. Then, she met Lord
Richard Hollinworth.
He was the scion of a wealthy family of merchants. One look between
the two and they fell hopelessly in love with one another. But, from
the moment of its inception, the match was ill-fated. She was a
prostitute and he a married man. Yet, both being naive of the danger,
they continued in their disasterous affair. Jane stopped seeing anyone
other than Richard and Richard vowed to put aside his barren wife and
forsake his loveless marriage for her.
Then, in the spring of 1674, Jane discovered she was carrying
Richard's child. And so did his wife. Mary Hollinworth had miscarried
countless pregnancies and grew livid with rage that a common street
whore was carrying her beloved Richard's child and she wasn't. As the
months passed, Mary grew more and more enraged. But Richard's wife had
a powerful and dangerous secret. She came from a family of witches
that could trace themselves to the Witch Queen of England, Anne Boleyn.
As Jane grew larger with her child and Richard began to arrange for a
divorce so that he could marry his mistress and legitimize his child,
Mary consulted with her family and together devised a curse that would
punish Jane for eternity. In the autumn of 1674, as a terrible storm
clamored outside, Jane gave birth to her son. As she lie after, weak
and in pain from the difficult labor, a cloaked figure stepped into
the birthing chamber and pushed aside her hood.
Mary started to murmur the dire words of the curse, having first seen
to it that Jane's nurses were effectively silenced. Then, she heard
the baby crying from the cradle near the fire. As she looked upon
Richard's son, Mary knew what would be the final blow. She lifted the
crying baby in her arms and said the words of the curse to Jane as lay
helplessly watching Mary steal her child. After the curse was uttered,
Jane fainted.
Jane left her mother's home the night, never to return. She searched
out news about her son, but heard very little. Four years after being
cursed, another vampire found Jane, starving and half-mad with hunger
and grief. Gabriel Lindley was also vampire, turned so by another
nearly three hundred years before. He took Jane in, taught her about
what she was and also taught her skills so that she might earn a
living by other means than her body.
For fifteen years, Gabriel instructed Jane and eventually came to view
her as a sort of daughter. Then, one night he announced that he had
taught her everything he could and took his leave that very night
after kissing Jane roughly and thrusting a sheath of papers in her
hands. The papers left to her his fortune and his homes across Europe.
And his name as his adopted daughter. Jane had gone from being a whore
without a cent to her name to a very wealthy woman.
She used her new wealth to search for her son. Jane hired spies and
paid others to infiltrate the Hollinworth household. Her persistance
paid off and nearly 21 years from the night he had been taken from
her, Jane saw her son again. His name was John and he was the most
beautiful creature she had ever seen, possessing her own gray-green
eyes. He also called Mary mother and tended to her like a devoted son.
Jane followed his military career closely, but some force compelled
her to not draw too close to her son. A residual effect of Mary's curse.
It was not until her John's youngest daughter, Catherine, came of age
that Jane tried to get back in her family's life. Of course, being
that Jane didn't look a day older than she had the day she was cursed
wasn't conducive to introducing herself as the girl's grandmother.
Instead, she came to Catherine as a friend. She nurtured Catherine,
set her up in a good marriage, and left her a sizable portion of the
immense wealth that Gabriel had given to her. Catherine lived a
charmed life, thanks to her beloved friend and died at a happy old age.
From then on, Jane had only two obsessions; increasing her wealth and
taking care of Catherine's decendents. The family came to know her
secret, but it was only revealed to one member every generation, a
sort of keeper of the family curse, so to speak. But now, over three
hundred years later, she has quietly walked out of her family's lives.
In the 1980's a vampire hunter used a member of the family to hunt her
down. She killed off the hunter, but also knew that the family was no
longer safe by being in contact with her.
So, she retired to her home in Scotland and manages the vast financial
empire she created, increasing the fortune Gabriel left to her many
times. Jane still prowls the streets of London from time to time and
has a few fellow vampires that she sees more as business associates
than real friends. With her quick mind and financial prowess, Jane
oversees the wealth of some older vampires who barely know how to
drive a car much less manage investments. Of course, she does this for
a price. Sometimes a percentage of the earnings. And sometimes
knowledge for Jane learned long ago that knowledge really is power
when used right.
Personality: Jane is quiet and watchful, her eyes seldom missing anything. Some
might call her detached and unemotional, but they would be wrong. Jane
only has a strong guard. To those that she loves, she is affectionate
and generous. To those that she doesn't, Jane Lindley is a dangerous
and resourceful enemy.
