Family: His wife is Kelly and they have four children, Jason(from Dale's 1st marriage), Natalee, Karsyn and Zachary.

Dale began racing in 1977 in the Limited Sportsman Division at Hickory Motor Speedway.His first Winston Cup race was at Martinsville, VA where he started 24th adn finished 14th. Dale joined Robert Yates Racing in 1995 while Ernie Irvan was recovering from life-threatening injuries he got at Michigan in August of 1994. He debuted the new Quality Care/Ford Credit team in Febuary 1996 and won the Busch Clash and the Daytona 500.In his first year with the new sponsorship, he finished a career-high third in the Winston Cup Championship behind Terry Labonte and Jeff Gordon. He won four times in 1996. He is the first ford driver to win the Brickyard 400 and the first driver to ever win Daytona and the Brickyard in the same year.He earned seven wins in 1997 and finished second in the Winston Cup Points Championship. Going into the 1998 season, Dale has earned 15 career victories and his first short-track win at Bristol. He ended the season with a 3rd place finish in the points standings. The 1999 season started on a sour note with a 37th place finish at the Daytona 500. But Dale came back strong and stayed consistent throughout the season and took the championship trophey.
