Within weeks of relocating from New York to Los Angeles to further pursue his acting career, Kerr Smith landed the role of Jack McPhee, a troubled teen whose mystery will unfold this season on "Dawson's Creek."

Smith grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Exton, Pa. During his senior year of high school, he made his first dramatic performance playing Sir Edward Ramsey in his school's production of "The King and I." His father, a financial advisor, urged Smith to get a degree in something sensible, which he did, graduating from the University of Vermont with a B.A. in finance and accounting. pic2 of jack

Smith returned to Exton to start a business marketing firm with his father. After he discovered that he enjoyed making the presentations more than the actual business, he decided to give acting a try. Shortly after moving to New York, he landed his first big role -- playing Ryder Hughes, Oakdale's resident bad boy, on "As the World Turns." His performance earned him the Best New Actor Award for 1996 from Soap Opera Magazine.

On the big screen, Smith portrayed an arrogant womanizer in the improvisational comedy "Kiss and Tell," and appears in the romantic comedy "Hit and Runway," an independent film on the festival circuit. Offscreen, the self-taught pianist enjoys writing music, working on the computer and playing with his dog, a Boxer named Maxine. He resides in Los Angeles.
