During a double dual

Competing against Charles City and Clear Lake at home on Friday during a double dual, the Crestwood varsity wrestling team pinned the Comets, 56-18, and rallied to down eighth-ranked Clear Lake, 36-31.

"This was a big meet for this group of young men," Crestwood head coach Doug Hatch said. "The best thing when you win a close, exciting meet like this (against Clear Lake) is that it involves everyone on the team doing their job. It really took a total team effort to beat Clear Lake."

Hatch noted that freshman Jake Miller "really stepped it up" with two pins on Friday.

"We knew going in that we had to win the close matches, and Brad Klobassa, Nick Lepa and Danny Kraft all won tight matches. We also knew that we couldn't give up the fall, and Brady Schmauss fought hard against a number two ranked wrestler (Andy Schmitt of Clear Lake) to not only avoid the fall, but he gave him quite a battle.

"When the meet (against Clear Lake) came down to Evan Carman (at 189) and Kyle Slifka (at 215), I was pretty sure we had them. Evan came through big, and Kyle is such a gamer," Hatch said.
