There is great power in the cross when we understand and see it for what it represents.
The cross forever changed the course of human history.
Paul said that the cross is the power of God to those who have been saved (1 Cor 1:18). The Cross is a symbol of Jesus Christ. Jesus was nailed to the cross by his hands and feet which, at that time was not a pleasant nor beautiful sight, in itself. The manifold purpose of the Son Of God was to bring us all into eternal life.
There was no other way, but the path that led to a place called Calvary.
The Romans method of crucifixion was the most brutal method of execution ever devised by man. Though his hands and feet were nailed to the cross, his mind and spirit was left free to think and feel.
Jesus lovingly reached out to others.
Hung between two theives, Jesus still forgave. Jesus prayed for the very people who were crucifying him, and asked God to forgive them. One of the theives asked to be remembered and Jesus promised him eternal life. Even as the Son of god, Jesus was still the son of a human mother, Mary. His love and concern for her was shown as he gave her into the care of his disciple John.
Jesus said it all with his dying breath.
    "It is finished."
Gods purpose for mankind had finally been delivered through the death of his Son.
Salvation was brought to a dying world as a free gift for those who believe.
Even a Roman soldier who witnessed the death of Jesus said,
"Truly, this was the son of God".

"For God so loved the world,
that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him
Should not perish,
but have everlasting life."
John 3:16
