Mock Trial (2000-2001)

I was going to make a photo page with the Mock Trial pictures, but I decided that MT (at least from early December to mid March) takes up enough of my life to earn it's very own page. Plus, before I start showing pictures I'd kind of have to explain what Mock Trial is. Here goes: Every year some guys from the Dallas Bar Association make up a pseudo court case. This case is a very detailed (yet simplified compared to a real court case) scenario which involves different witnesses for the proscecution or defense. This case packet is then sent to all of the Mock Trial teams across the state. Each team can consist of up to ten team members: 6 lawyers (3 proscecution, 3 defense) and 4 gender unspecified witnesses (actually there are more than four witness roles to be filled so inevidably some people have to double up)

The 2000/2001 Case Synopsis(to the best of my memory;it was a few months ago):
Kat Hunter is an 11 year old who has been bounced from foster home to foster home from a very early age. There are reports of her/him displaying violent tendencies, like rumors of shooting a neighbor's cat or the essay he/she wrote about an amusmant park massacre. However, Kat has never before actually done anything violent and much of what he/she is reported with could be passed off as childish imaturity. After all, Kat is only eleven years old...
Enter Madison McDaniel. Madison is the only thing that's steady in Kat's life. He/She is Kat's 16 year old cousin. The two are very close. In fact, Madison has always been a role model to Kat. Madison taught Kat gun safety how to handle guns, which has always been an interest of the McDaniel family. Kat idolizes Madison, and would do anything for her/him.

And then on April 1st, 2000, Brit Spears, a rival of Madison, ends up dead with a bullet wound to the head. And the one behind the gun...none other than 11 year old Kat Hunter.

The point of the trial is to prove whether or not Madison, the defendant, intentionally assisted, aided, or encouraged Kat into killing Brit. Different people, a neighbor with a possible grudge, a teacher who hasn't really seen her student, Madison, in 6 years, a accident prone cop with a bias against teenagers, and an eyewitness with a vision problem all take the stand in order to vouch for their side. In each round, the proscecution of one team is pitted against the defense of another, and the whole things starts all over again...

I can't wait till next year!!!!

My Mock Trial groupies consist of ten high schoolers ages 14-18, with three seniors moving on to college when summer's over, and three spaces to be filled. I can't wait until next year's tryouts to see who they'll be. But until then...
