Philosophy Statement of the Science Department

At The International School of Panama, we, the teachers in the Science Department, believe that children are curious about the world around them. This natural curiosity is fostered when children are provided with opportunities to learn and become aware of themselves and their surroundings. We also believe that through science literacy we enable our students to appreciate and understand nature. This will allow them to make responsible decisions for the benefit of themselves and the environment.

Students develop this literacy in science through the acquisition of communication skills, technical skills, problem-solving skills, human relation skills, and experimental and investigative skills.

Therefore, we will:

• Provide our students with a solid body of knowledge in the sciences, to the best of our capabilities.

• Help our students to develop the ability needed to analyze, evaluate, and synthesize scientific information.

• Give them the opportunity to apply the methods and techniques of Science, appreciate their limitations, and evaluate the outcomes obtained.

• Engender awareness of the possible effects and implications of the irresponsible use of science and technology.

Furthermore, our staff will maintain its commitment to the ongoing assessment of the curriculum and methodologies in the teaching of science in order to validate our programs and keep them and ourselves updated. We will provide our students a wide range of activities and we will use a variety of assessment methods with the aim of taking into account individual learning styles.
