( sequencer )
XG-MIDI- 24 track sequencer-on screen 24 track mixing board that memorizes every command, built in sound module, ' ease of operation ' over 500 voices, plus sound effects, some writing advantages over QY20, generates SMF directly to your computer...

Yamaha  QY20
8 track sequencer,  has 100 voices... QY70 & QY20 - powerful writing, sequencing & recording tools. Both can be edited in real and/or step time.  QY20 does not create smf  files but I love it anyway.

Yamaha MDF2
Data Filer
Formats 3.5 floppy disk for Yamaha application, saves midi data to disk, can be used as a sequencer but I don't.

I use a Roland MIDI CONTROLLER Keyboard with an
external Yamaha sound module to write and program music. It is like a computer controlled player piano on steroids!!!

A MIDI Controller has no on board sound. It has to be interfaced with another MIDI sound module. It is an excellent recording tool.

Most of my equipment is inside of 19" wide standard rack  modules design for the purpose of mounting, interchanging and upgrading. I have mine enclosed in glass and wood cabinets.
