Here's to the Night

By: Cherry Coke

Jessie twirled in her yellow dress, knowing she was late for school. She dashed across the street and around the corner, until she finally spotted school. She pushed the hair out of her face, and rushed into her class room. She had made it, for a little chat with her friends.

"Hey, Jess!" She heard James call out.

Jessie smiled, "Hey. What's up?"

He shrugged, "Nothing much, except I'm getting a Growlithe for my birthday."

She giggled, "Too bad we can't have our birthdays on the same day, but ah, I guess were kinda old for that, eh?". James nodded, and blushed.

Jessie headed for her desk, which was right next to Bailey's. "Hey, Bail? Bring your Math grades up yet?" Jessie had asked her that everyday, but Bailey hadn't taking it seriously considering they were really close friends. So she just shook her head, and smiled.

Jessie took all her books out from her book bag, and put them in her desk. Then she grabbed her book bag, and headed for her cubby. Her cubby was right next to James. "Mrs. Hanica said we have an assembly today....that should be interesting." James said.

Jessie rolled her eyes, "Tell me about it...." She muttered and headed back for her desk. She looked at the board to find there was no morning work, only her teacher, Mrs. Hanica waiting in front of the black board for everyone to quite down.

"Class!" She shouted, her voice colder then snow. "I have an announcement to make. Today there is no Morning Work, instead I want all of you folks to work on your people skills. I want each and every one of you to write at least one thing you like about everyone in this class."

There was a lot of moans.

"Hush! I don't want to hear whining, now do as your told!"

Jessie sighed and made eye contact across the room with her best friend, Samantha. She seemed to be saying, This is gonna be hard.' Jessie paid no mind. She could find a lot of things for one person, she considered herself a 'People person'. Even if half of the fifth grade did not really know, know who she was. She took out a notebook, and began to write. She could only fit three people,

1. Samantha: Funny, Kind, creative, and understanding. My best friend.
2. Bailey: Artistic, funny, bold, and daring.
3. Christine: Funny, easy going, opstamistic, and fun.

She really wanted to put James but she felt if he saw what she had really thought of him, people would laugh at her. He wasn't really that popular, and hated by most popular girls. So she decided to wait to find the right choice of words.

"That was easy," She heard Bailey brag. She always did that. Jessie sighed, and ignored her.

Before she could write anymore, she herd Mrs. Hanica say,"Children please take out your Math books."

She did as she was told, but found it hard to concentrate on the lesson. Every now and then her mind would slip out, then sneak back in, as though it was a criminal. As her mind slowly drifted of, Jessie thought she might give James a code name, so if she wanted to say good things about him in front of people she could say the code name and nobody would know who she was talking about. She decided to call him, 'Monkey ears.' She drew hearts all over her paper until she was startled to the sound of, "Jessica! Pleas stop drawing!!"

Jessie sighed and tried to pay attention. Soon the sound of her teacher talking sounded just like 'Blah, Blah, Blah', and nothing more. She looked at her as if she was paying attention, but her mind easily slipped out again. After about an hour of not paying attention she heard, "Children, please line up. We have an assembly."

Jessie got up and headed for her usual crowd in line. Samantha, Bailey, and Christine. James hung with Jason, Bradon, and Travis. Classes from every where flooded through the hallways into the auditorium-if you could call it that, it was just a gym and they had to sit on the floor, but not the teachers.

They all sat down and watched the stage (In there gym, they had a stage, At least I really do!). Although for Jessie it seemed hard. So many people to talk to. So many faces. So many voices. It was really hard to concentrate on one thing. That is until the principal told them to quiet down.

"All right children, quiet down". He hushed them. "Today we have a special surprise. A farmer is coming it to tell us all about farm life."

There where a lot of groans. "Now, can anyone tell me about farmers, or farm life?". A couple of the younger set children raised there hands, but Jessie decided not to. After all, she was in fifth grade now. She looked around to see who else had there hands up, to her surprise James did. The principal pointed to him, "Yes young man?"

"Hurts." James replied

"What hurts?" Mr. Zanetti, the principal asked.

"When you run into a cow."

The room broke the silence with laughter. Although, Mr. Zanetti did not seem happy.

"Be serious young man, or it'll be detention." James continued to laugh. Mr. Zanetti moved.

Jessie, and her friends got bored and started to talk. She could see people passing something around, it looked like a piece of paper. When it finally reached her it said;

'When the Clock reaches 10:30 say moo as loud as you can. Don't worry your not alone, we are all going to do it.'

She stared at it, and passed it on to the person next to her, Jason. She kept her eye on the clock, it was 10:29. One more minute to go!.

When it reached 10:30, the whole auditorium was mooing. Even though teachers where screaming at them. Everything was so wild. A sixth grade boy named, Chris stood up and started to sing. "Peaches for you, and peaches for me! C'mon everybody!". They broke out singing, until they had to call the whole assembly off.

* * *

Jessie flung herself across her bed, as she thought of her childhood. The days she longed for the most. But she had a chance to enjoy them again, at her class reunion. She had left school for a while, for a reason unmentionable but now she had gotten an invitation from one of her old classmates, to a party with everyone from her old school, she was so excited.

She was the young age of 18 now, and she was nervous about seeing, Samantha, or James again. She was worried that they might have changed, and not like her anymore. And that was the worst part. She rummaged through her closet to find the best thing to wear. She didn't have enough money to buy a new dress, so she figured she spiff up an old one.

Jessie gazed in the mirror to find a skinny little nobody. She hated her hair, body, ears, arms, legs and nose. She gave herself credit for her beautiful eyes though, that was the one thing she loved most.

She glanced out the window to the new day. Her tiny arms shivered to the thought of James, her first crush changing. She still had sort of a feeling for him. And she was determined that, that party was how she'd win his love.
