YOU AND I
Jezrocket

Disclaimer: I still own nothing, and I got the poem (once again) from my friend Annaliese Egan, so all this stuff is copyrighted to other peoples...K?

Note: I'm sorry. I just couldn't stand her anymore. She's such a...um, maybe I won't say that. Sorry about the length of time that the twerp is in this fic too. I hate him as much as you do.

You and I

When a silver raindrop
Becomes a tear
When the Lord touches
A world born of fear

"Wha-what do you mean?" Ash whispered.

"I'm sorry, Ash...she passed away.." Daisy's sad voice came from the other end of the line.

"But how? I don't understand (we know, Ash, you never understand!) it was just a Spinarak sting!!"

"She didn't know it, but her fear of bugs was real...she was allergic, but the symptoms of her allergy didn't show until..until it was..." Misty's older sister broke off, trying to keep her voice under control.

"The funeral's in two days...Cerulean Gym."

"I'll be there." Ash's voice was dead and numb.

"Ash?"

"Yes?"

"She never would have admitted it, but...she wouldn't have left you if she could help it. Ever."

Ash nodded.

"I know..." He whispered. "Thank-you Daisy."

"I'm sorry Ash." All Daisy heard was a faint bleeping noise as Ash slammed down the reciever and started to cry.

Two Days Later...

When all men are fighting
And peace is gone
When they all blame each other
For the things that go wrong

"Prepare for - what the hell?" Jessie demanded, mid-line. "Where is she and why are you in that?"

"Misty passed away. I'm going to her funeral."

James looked sorrowful. "Oh, that's so sad."

Jessie smirked. "But pity isn't going to stop us from stealing that Pikachu!"

"But Jess-" James protested.

"Just go away Team Rocket!" Ash yelled angrily. All three rockets stared at him.

"I'm going to Misty's funeral. And no one, including you is going to stop me." He stared threateningly into Jessie's eyes, and she moved out of his way, respectfully.

Ash stormed down the road, then as an afterthought added, "Pikachu, Thunder."

"Pika, pikaaaaaaaaaa-"

Team Rocket leapt into each others arms and screamed.

"I feel sorry for him." A charred James commented.

"What?" Jessie asked, her usually vibrant hair now a strange shade of grey. Then she nodded, symathetically.

"Yeah, well, I reckon it's a trick." Meowth said. "A clever scheme just to get us on his side! Think of what he could do."

Jessie and James looked bored.

"Why don't we sacrifice Meowth? It would show we aren't as heartless as we look!" Jessie wondered.

The cat snorted. "Oh, sure. We all know I mean much more ta you's two than ya do ta each odder." Meowth was slammed into a wall 15 ft away courtesy of Jessie's fist.

"Hmmph." She dusted off her hands. James gave a disgusted snort, then gave Jessie a reproachful, yet annoyed look. Meowth slid down the wall.

"Ow. Dat hoit."

When the fire that burns us
Devoors our souls
When all of the days
Have passed by

James sighed. He knew Jessie was easily angered and that she'd had a bad childhood, and that she didn't need to be close to anyone. But he would still miss her if she were gone..they had been best friends since...forever, and he couldn't imagine life without her.

Our friendship will last
An eternity past
Two friends stuck fast
You and I

Jessie knew how Ash felt. Someone close to her and been snatched from her grasp, many years ago. She'd die before she left James, and she wished she weren't so aggressive, but she was never going to be hurt like that again. A lump formed in Jessie's throat as she thought of her mother.

"Momma, why'd you go?" She whispered wistfully.

When the whispering wind
Stops riding the trees
When the earth can't be seen
For the roaring of seas

James gave his partner a strange look. "Jess, you okay?"

"Yes, fine." She flashed him a fake smile, but she wasn't okay and he knew it.

"Jessie, are you sure?"

His partner shot him a dirty look. "I said I'm fine!"

"Okay, okay!"

Jesie glanced at her cringing partner.

"I want to find the twerp. See if we can help."

When a baby's sweet cry
Is heard no more
When the world collapses
From the weight of war
Ash looked up numbly from the campfire.

"Hey, kid." Jessie murmured kindly.

"How're you doing?" James asked softly.

"Since when do you care?" Ash said coldly.

"Ash. My mother died when I was seven, Ash."

Ash stared at the usually violent 17 year old who was now using the same tone of voice that he himself was using only hours before.

"I know how bad you feel." She continued, tears beginning to well upin her eyes.

"Like it's all your fault, huh?" Ash nodded sadly.

"Well, don't think like that...these things...they happen."

Jessie bit her lip. I will not cry, I will not cry, oh crap, I'm crying, not in front of the twerp, James please don't-

But too late and oblivious to Jessie's silent plea, James stroked her cheek gently.

"Don't cry Jess, you know I hate it when-uh, that is.." He trailed off mid-sentence as he notice Jessie's eyes giving off warning signals and Ash and Pikachu staring at them wierdly.

"Yeah.." Ash cleared his throat, breaking the silence. He smiled gratefully. "Thanks you guys."

Jessie winked. "Any time twerp."

When the darkness that scares us
Swallows us whole
When the stars are blown out
From the sky

"What were you saying back there?" Jessie asked curiously.

"Um, nothing?"

"Nothing. Right. Which is why you just turned the colour of your 'R'.What's the deal?"

"Well, I just..um, Jessie? You know I'll never leave you, right?"
I love you Jessie, I'll never leave you.

Jessie smiled gently. "Uh-huh."
Love you too, James.

"And you'll always be my best friend."

"Thanks James. I really appreciate that, even if I don't show it."

"Okay, Jess. Goodnight."

"G'night James." She stood on her tiptoes and gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek, making him blush.

"And if it helps, I'll never leave you either."

"It helps Jess, it helps, promise?"

"Promise."

We'll be together
After forever
We'll always be friends
You and I
