Keeping Track

The first tip I'm going to give you seems so basic and simple that it almost doesn't seem worth mentioning -- but very few fishermen take advantage of it: keep a fishing log, every day you fish.

Note the date, weather conditions, the lake you were on, the kinds of structures you fished, what kinds of fish you caught and on what kinds of baits, how the fish were biting (were they attacking the lure, or did they have to be coaxed?), and other bits of information you pick up. Perhaps you talked with someone who has fished this lake for years and he told you something you want to remember for the next time you fish it.

Season after fishing season, you'll find yourself referring more and more to your trusty log. It will help you, not only relive some great fishing memories, but it will provide you with valuable patterns of information.
