SAMUEL L. TURNER, SR. '61

 

Sam Turner was a four-year varsity letter winner in soccer from 1957-1960. Sam was an integral part of the Hightstown program that won three consecutive state championships in 1957, 58, 59. Sam was team captain his junior and senior year under legendary Hall of Fame Coach Russ Beaulieu.

Turner also played and succeeded as a varsity letter winner in baseball, basketball and track. Sam's true love, however, was soccer.

Upon graduation from Hightstown High School Sam continued his academic and athletic career at Montclair State. Sam was voted Most Valuable Player in 1962 and 1963 and was also named Little All-American in 1962. Sam graduated from Montclair in 1965 with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education. Sam was selected to play in the Pan American Games in 1963 but an injury prevented him from actually participating in this international event.

Sam began his professional career at Hightstown High School in 1971 as a physical education teacher. Sam coached baseball for eight years, three as head coach and soccer for six years, also three as head coach during his thirty years teaching at Hightstown High School Sam is currently an assistant soccer coach on the Hightstown staff.

Sam has always been an active member of his church. Sam currently is an ordained Minister and Pastor of the Nov Jerusalem Christian Church.

Sam is married and lives in Hightstown. He has four children, Angela who is married and resides in Pennsylvania, Sam Jr. who is employed by Fed Ex, Debbie who is a teacher in the district and David who lives at home with Sam and his wife Carilyn.
