JOHN E. WALKER `48

John Walker lettered in soccer for four years and in basketball for three years. He was selected an All-State Soccer player in his junior and senior years. In 1948 he kicked the one goal to bring the state championship to HHS. Because of his "brilliant play", the 1999 Newark Star Ledger listed him among the twenty outstanding soccer players in the state of New Jersey between 1940 and 1960.

In basketball Prof. Hunt always assigned him to guard the opponent's leading scorer. In 1948 Met Ballou of Highland Park established a new Middlesex County basketball scoring record. That year John held him in the first game to eight points and in the second to one. As captain of the '48 basketball team John was instrumental in bringing the State Central Jersey Basketball Championship to Hightstown High School.

During his years of playing at HHS John's teams won two State Sectional Soccer Championships, two Soccer State Championships and one State Central Jersey Basketball Championship.

Ken Eiker had this to say of John, "I count my blessings that I had John Walker in front of me. Quiet in nature but strong in will, determination, and skill John had great anticipation in knowing where the ball was going ... as a result he was always in the right Position. Seeing an offensive player beat John was a rarity. Not much ever got by or around him. He was a natural!"

John spent time in Austria in 1951 to 1953 in the armed forces. There he played both basketball and baseball on the base teams. In those days the base teams were often composed of ex-college athletes, John was able to fill in nicely with athletes from all walks of life. He has always been considered one of Hightstown's finest athletes and citizens.
