WINNIE EDWARDS '73

 

Winnie Edwards was on both the football and track teams at Hightstown High School Winnie excelled in sports, but the javelin was what he did best. He shattered the old Delaware Valley League meet record of 176'5" with a throw of 212'1". Winnie still holds the school and county record in this event. He was undefeated in the javelin in dual meets. He won the State Group II Sectional meet with a throw of 197'2". He placed fifth overall in the state Meet of Champions. He was presented with the Hightstown VFW award as the school's outstanding track Athlete of the Year. He was the first Hightstown athlete and the first Mercer County athlete named to the First Team All Shore Conference. Winnie was also named to the First Team all Delaware Valley Conference for football at defensive end.

Winnie attended St. Paul College in Lawrenceville, Virginia on a track scholarship. He then served in the US Army. Tragically, Winnie passed away in 1977 after suffering from leukemia.
