Working With The
Different Colored Poodles. |

Recognizing and working with the
Parti genes in a solid colored Poodle is not easy. Because the Parti color, in
the past has been so Taboo, many Pedigrees do not tell you the true colors of
the Poodles you may be working with. Most often the Parti's were culled at birth
and the solids went forth either within the breeding program or to a pet home.
It appears that few breeders realized that a certain percentage of the siblings
of the Parti colored Poodles would also be carrying the genes to produce Parti's
in the future. This is one of the reasons that the Partis in the US were carried
down through the generations and were bought forth when bred to another Parti or
colored patterned gene carrier. I like the Tuxedo pattern (shown below) on a
Poodle and I also like to work with solid gene carriers as they tend to produce
less ticking on the coat. The white Poodle with the pink skin tends to be more
likely than any other solid color to carry Parti genes. The question is how do
you tell who is and who is not carrying for a Parti gene. Below I will list some
of the telltale signs of a Parti gene carrier.
Possible Solid Gene Carriers can have any or all of the
following:
-
Broken skin of any shape or size in one or more places on
the skin.
-
Two colors on the pads of feet.
-
More than one color on the toenails.
-
More than one color on the face.
-
Different colors under the tail.
The very best way to see any of these tell tale signs is to
look at the skin while it is wet.
In this picture of Montana it
is obvious that she is a Parti. Montana is now two years old and has her
first litter. The entire litter is Parti's.
