Population

According to statistical data, the population of Vietnam in 1995 amounts to approximately 73 million 959 thousand persons, with a density of 223 persons per square kilometre, and an annual population increase of about 2%. Vietnam is a nation with a younger population in which the number of under 25 years old is fairly high, taking about 50%, the rate of literate persons reaches more than 90%. Population structure: 48.8% male and 51.2% female.

On the territory of Vietnam live 54 different nationalities, mainly the ethnic Vietnamese - Kinh amounts to approximately 86%. Among the 53 ethnic minorities, the biggest ones are the Tay and Thai, next come the Muong, Hoa, Khme, Nung, H'mong.
