Briefing room, New Republic Headquarters:
A group of men stood huddled at the head of the room. Three humans were joined by a Mon Calamari and a Twi'lek. All five looked extremely tense.
The assembled members of Rogue Squadron didn't look much better, especially the young female seated near the head of the room. Her face was pale and she looked scared. A tall redheaded young man was comforting her. The last stragglers finally poured into the room, along with several of the New Republic's greatest heroes.
Leia Organa-Solo moved quickly to the front, laying a hand on the pale-faced woman's shoulder as she passed, smiling down to her. The tallest of the five men looked up and saw Leia. The men broke up and Wedge Antilles turned to the assembled pilots. "Alright everyone, let's get this thing started. Admiral?"
Airen Cracken nodded to Wedge and took his place. Many of the pilots shifted uneasily in their seats as the Admiral stood. There were few who could handle his stare. "Thank you, Commander.
"As many of you know, we have reason to believe that NRI's Wraith Squadron is about to walk into a trap." The Admiral paused and looked directly at the young woman. His son comforted her. She met his hard gaze, unflinching. He nodded and she stood shakily.
Kelly Antilles took a deep ragged breath and composed herself. "As you all know, unlike my brother," she looked at Wedge lovingly, "I am adept at using the force." She then caught the eyes of Corran Horn and the dark cloaked figure in the back of the room. The hood of the cloak bobbed and she continued. "One of my abilities is to know when those close to me, those I feel responsible for, are in trouble. Especially when they are in mortal danger."
She paused, looking around the room. The crease in her brow seemed to deepen. "Many of you witnessed what happens when I feel this today in the caf. Luckily, I was witnessing the future. The Wraith's aren't dead... yet. I feel that we haven't much time, though. My friends... my former squad is in trouble." She locked her gaze on Myn Donos, pleading for his understanding and help. Myn's eyes filled with understanding, more emotion the man had shown since he was a child.
Her shoulders sagged as she dropped heavily back into her seat, head lowered. Pash Cracken put an arm around her shoulders and leaned forward, offering words of comfort. Kelly reached up and gave his hand a squeeze to let him know she appreciated his efforts.
Admiral Cracken frowned slightly at their display. He still wasn't comfortable with Pash's relationship with Kelly. "Here is the deal. Wraith Squadron is deep undercover in the outer Rim territories trying to infiltrate an Imperial base. We aren't even sure exactly where they are. From glimpses of landscape and such that Lieutenant Antilles got in her 'vision', we have narrowed down the area." The lights dimmed and a holo of the outer Rim appeared above the table. Several planets were marked in red. "Those red marks are the most likely candidates. All have breathable atmospheres and the terrain is similar to what the Lieutenant told us."
Wedge stepped forward. "This will be a dangerous and completely voluntary mission. Those who do not wish to accompany us may tell Tycho, Nawarra or myself after this meeting."
"Sir," Myn's voice broke into everyone's thoughts. "I really don't think that will be a problem." He looked to his fellow Rogues. All gave their assent to his comment.
"So Chief, what are we gonna do?" Wes Janson spoke for the first time, rather unusual for the exuberant pilot. His face gave away his feelings of worry for his former charges.
Wedge looked at him, slightly surprised at his jester's sudden seriousness. "Well, first thing is we've got to get there. We are lucky of having someone very familiar with the outer Rim territories to join us. General Solo and Chewbacca will be flying the Falcon with any ground troops we may need."
"Won't the Falcon be a tip-off," asked Gavin Darklighter. "I mean, she's the best known hunk of junk in the Galaxy."
Chewbacca growled fiercely at the young Rogue who quickly scrambled closer to Asyr Seilar.
Han chuckled. "Don't worry, Chewie. I'll make sure he gets to be part of the ground assault team."
Gavin swallowed hard. Several of the other pilots chuckled at the young man's discomfort.
Wedge interrupted in order to save Gavin from further comments. "The Falcon will be disguised. There are plenty of YT-1300's in the air. They are a good cargo ship." That got a few more chuckles from the group and a huge smile from Han and Leia.
Ideas were thrown out during the rest of the meeting on how to proceed. They decided a ship, probably a Mon-Calamari cruiser, would bring all the X-Wings, plus Kelly and Pash's A-Wings in case they needed a fast ship, and the Falcon close to the Rim. From there they would deploy nine X-Wings and the Falcon with it's ground troops. Then, they'd be playing by ear.
The plan was to leave in the morning. Everyone left to get ready.
Wedge went to his office in order to make arrangements of who was going where. He pulled up a list of squad members on his screen. Going through the names, he suddenly realized he was looking at the Wraith roster. He sighed and rubbed his eyes.
There was a knock at his door. "Yes?"
Kelly poked her head in. "Can I come in, Wedge?"
"Sure," he got up and came around his desk to hug her. "You ok?"
"I was about to ask you the same thing."
He reached over and turned his terminal around so she could see. "This answer your question?"
She looked over the names and a pained look came over her face. "Oh," she answered quietly.
"Sorry. I was trying to pull up the Rogue roster to start making assignments."
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about."
"Oh?"
"I was thinking that the best idea would be for Myn, Wes and you to join me on the ground crew."
"Why," he asked quietly.
"Tycho and Corran can handle the X-wings."
"Why," he repeated.
"What?"
"Why do you want Myn, Wes and me?"
"Because the three of you have worked closely with the Wraith's and would know them, undercover or not. Everyone has their little quirks that make them individual."
"Ok, that's good enough." He stood with his hands on his hips.
"What?" She was totally confused now.
"I already thought of that. You're a little slow, Sis." He grinned and playfully knocked her in the shoulder.
"Oh," she looked dejected.
"Don't worry. You will be in charge of the ground crew unless..."
"Unless Cracken brings in his big shots."
"Yep." He put his hands on her shoulders and steered her towards the door. "Now, go get your ship ready and get some rest. I've got work to do."
She reluctantly went to the door and opened it. Wedge went back behind his desk and sat. She paused in the open doorway and turned towards him. "Have I told you lately that I love you, big brother?"
He smiled as she closed the door behind her. "I love you too, little princess."
The landing bay was busy. R2 units, techs and Rogues were everywhere. Kelly raised her head to the sound of a familiar beep coming towards her.
"I'm coming, Winger. I just needed to talk to Wedge."
The droid warbled as if scolding her.
"I'm fine. We need to get the ships in good order." They moved to a spot where an X-Wing and an A-Wing were berthed side by side. Kelly looked at both and decided on the X. She did a standard once over on the outside while Winger plugged in and checked out the computer. "How is she?"
The droid beeped happily.
"Good. Last time I took her out the engines sounded a bit off. I'm gonna check on them." She popped open the cover on the engines and started working.
A few hours later, a figure approached the X-Wing. Winger beeped hello and the person winked back. "Hey! What are you doin' in there?!"
Kelly was buried in the engine and the voice startled her. She jumped and hit her head. "Ouch!" She slid out to see Cubber standing there grinning at her. She stared as harshly as she could at the mechanic, which only made him laugh. She sighed and grabbed a towel to wipe her hands. "What do you need Cubber?"
"Just lookin' to see what you were up to." He poked his head in the engine. "Hmm, not bad. You adjusted the fuel/air intake ratio to better improve the engine's performance. Nice job, but..."
"But what?"
Cubber looked about. "Well, I think it's about time for you to go get some rest."
Kelly followed his gaze. There were a few techs and droids wandering about, but no pilots. "Sithspit! What time is it?"
"About 21:30. Y'all are gonna have a long trip, so you better get out of here."
"Oh no." She threw the towel at Cubber and started running for the door. "I missed dinner. You and Winger get that other engine fixed!" Then she was gone.
Cubber watched her and shook his head. "Strange Master you have there."
Winger answered with a long, positive beep.
Kelly ran to the caf and slid through the door. She looked around and saw Pash, Wedge, Tycho and Wes sitting together. They all looked up as she entered.
"What took so long, slowpoke," asked Wes with a smile.
Kelly moved to get food from the machine. "I, unlike some others," she said with a grin, "have been working on my X-Wing." She picked up her tray and moved to the table.
Pash stood and gave her his chair. She looked up at him and smiled, then leaned up and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks dear." He pulled up another chair, spun it around and sat.
"So, what's going on," Kelly asked. "You guys look like you're having some sort of secret meeting."
"We are," said Tycho, matter-of-factly.
"Anything I can get in on?"
"Maaaaaay-beeeee," grinned Wes.
Kelly looked at Wes and rolled her eyes. She turned to look at Wedge. "So, what's up, big bro?"Wedge took a sip of his drink, looking her straight in the eyes. There was a gleam to them that Kelly hadn't seen since they were kids getting in trouble. She sat her fork down and looked around the table. "What is going on?" The last one she laid her eyes on was Pash.
Guilty was the only word to describe the look on his face. "Pash?"
"Uh," he faltered, looking to his accomplices for help. Tycho raised his eyebrows in a go ahead manner. Wes pointed at Kelly and mouthed Tell her! Lastly he looked at Wedge, who shrugged.
Kelly's eyes had not left Pash, though she had an idea of what was happening behind her. No, she was not going to use her Jedi skills to find out. "Well," she asked, waiting patiently, her food forgotten.
Pash sighed, shoulders sinking. His surprise was now ruined. "It's something Pash can tell you about later, Kel," Wedge said. "AFTER we save the Wraiths."
Kelly cocked her head and looked at Wedge. "Ok. Speaking of the Wraiths, how's the plan coming?"
Pash sighed, relaxing. I'm safe, he thought.
"Well, Myn, Wes, you and I will go in first. I've got Hobbie, Asyr and Inyri as backup."
"That leaves seven X-Wing pilots. I thought we were going with nine."
"Well, we're still not sure if Cracken is going to send anybody."
"I kinda doubt it since the Rogues are volunteering," says Pash. "Though he may send one or two for organizational purposes."
"True," responded Wedge. "But we aren't sure yet."
"And if it's going to be as bad as Kelly thinks," pipes in Tycho, "we'll need the help."
Kelly lowered her head, closed her eyes and frowned. Everyone watched her closely. Finally she spoke. "They are alright, but nervous." She looked up, "I think they know something's up."
"Can you tell what kind of disguises they are using," asked Wedge.
"No, I see them in their true forms."
"Well, that idea is blown," Wes said.
"Sorry."
"It's not your fault, Kel... I'm sorry."
"No..."
"Stop." Pash looked between Kelly and Wes. "We know you both are very close to the Wraiths. You need to put your minds together in order to find them."
"Pash is right guys," added Wedge. "Both of you are stressed and tired. We all need to get some sleep."
Tycho stood and tugged at Wes. "I'm beat. Come on Wes, let's go get some rest."
Wes stood and he and Tycho moved towards the door. Kelly jumped up and grabbed Wes in a fierce hug before he got past her. "She's gonna be fine," she whispered in his ear. He hugged her tighter, acknowledging her statement. "Good night guys," she said as they left.
Wedge stood, "I'm off too." He hugged Kelly then turned to leave. "G'night Pash. G'night little princess."
"Night Veggie."
Pash and Kelly stood in the caf alone. "I noticed you weren't on the ground crew list," said Kelly.
"Yeah, they want me available to fly an X or an A if they need either."
She continued to stare out the way Wedge left. "What were you going to tell me earlier?"
Pash put his arms around her from behind. "Like Wedge said, it can wait. It needs to wait until the Wraiths are found."
Kelly leaned deeper into his arms. "Ok."
Pash lowered his head and kissed her on the cheek. "You've already told me the Wraiths are fine. What about you?"
"I'm... I'm ok, just a little scared."
He held her tight. "Don't worry, I'm here."
Suddenly Kelly tensed and stood up straight. A smile crossed her face that Pash couldn't see.
"What is it," he asked rather urgently.
Kelly turned and looked at him, grinning hugely. "We have company! GOOD company!" She grabbed Pash's hand and took off running.
Being dragged behind, Pash asks confused, "Who?"
"You'll see!"
Kelly dragged a confused Pash to the landing bay, nearly barreling into Corran Horn as they rounded the corner. "Oops! Oh Corran, did she tell you she was coming?"
"WHO," asked poor Pash.
"No, I sensed as they entered the system. I'm as curious as you are," answered Corran.
"WHO?" asked Pash again. Then he heard the scream of approaching engines.
The Pulsar Skate landed oh-so gently in the bay. Kelly and Corran both waited eagerly for the ship to power down. They both took off at a run when they saw the green light. A man and a woman exited the ship. Upon seeing the two figures running towards them, the woman began to run. She and Corran flew into each other's arms. "Hi there, cutie," Mirax said to her husband.
"Hi to you," replied Corran as he kissed her.
Kelly continued to barrel headlong into the man who caught her up and spun her around. "UNCLE BOOSTER!!"
"Hiya little princess! How's my Jedi Knight?"
Kelly grinned. "Fine. What are you and Mirax doing here?"
They walked to Mirax and Corran. "We got a call saying the Wraiths were missing," Mirax answered. "They said the Rogues needed a way to get out to the outer Rim."
"Who called?"
"I did," said a distinctive Mon Calamari voice. Everyone turned to see Admiral Ackbar returning Pash's salute before moving towards them.
"Sir!" Both Kelly and Corran snapped to attention.
"At ease." He turned his attention to the guests. "Welcome Booster, Mirax. I hope your journey was uneventful."
"Who's going to stop a Super Star Destroyer," replied Booster with a smile.
"Good." Ackbar looked to Kelly and Corran. "I asked the Errant Venture to accompany the Rogues in order for you to be able to get closer in and have your back-up there and not thirty minutes or so away."
"Is Commander Antilles aware of this," asked Corran.
"I am now." Wedge, half dressed, stood sleepily in the doorway.
"Hey kid," Booster grinned. "We're your ride."
"Hi Booster. Now, can my pilots and I please go get some rest?"
"Yes of course," said the Admiral. "We will discuss the new plans in the morning."
By 10:30 all ships were loaded on the Errant Venture. The mock-Falcon was beside the Pulsar Skate. Thirteen X-Wings and 2 A-Wings were nearby. The Rogues mingled with the crew.
Booster, Han, Wedge, Mirax, Tycho, Corran, Luke and Kelly gathered together in a conference room to discuss the new plans.
"I can take you all the way into the Rim," announced Booster.
"That will be helpful," Luke said quietly.
Kelly spoke next, "I think we need to check the planets to see which one they are on."
"How do you plan on doing that," asked Tycho.
"I'm still working that out."
"Ok, when you figure it out, let us know," Wedge said. "We'll get back together later. It's a long ride out there."
As everyone was leaving, Kelly stopped Corran and Luke. "I have an idea, but I need to talk to you." The three of them stepped back into the conference room and closed the door.
Wedge sat in the lounge drinking a cup of caf and watching the sky flow by. His mind was working on how to find the Wraiths. So many have perished. If we have a way to find them, we can save them.
"Veggie?" Mirax plopped on the couch beside Wedge, looking as vibrant as ever. "You look like you're a million parsecs away."
Wedge looked up and smiled. "Yeah, just trying to figure out how to find them."
"You will," she said as she pat his hand. "You always do. Have you seen Corran?"
"Not since the meeting."
Mirax looked curious. "Hmm, neither have I."
"Maybe he..." his comlink beeped interrupting him. "Antilles here." He listened closely, his forehead creasing with confusion. "I may know where he is."
"Huh? What was that all about," she asked.
"I just got a call to come to the conference room."
"Interesting."
Wedge stood, sitting down his cup. "We'll see. I'll make sure to let you know."
Elsewhere in the lounge, Pash Cracken stood and moved towards the door. He and Wedge arrived at the same time. "You heading to the conference room," he asked Wedge.
"Sure am. You get a call too?"
"Yeah. What's going on?"
"I have no idea. I guess we'll find out soon enough."
On the way, Ooryl Qyrrg joined them. He also had gotten a call to come to the conference room. None of them had any idea why the three of them were called.
They walked in the door to find Luke, Corran and Kelly deep in discussion. Kelly looked up as they entered and smiled. "Great, you're here. Come. Sit."
Wedge, Pash and Ooryl sat down confused. "What's going on," asked Wedge.
"We've come up with a way to find the Wraiths."
Pash looks at the three Jedi, "So why are the three of us here and not General Solo and Tycho?"
"That's because you three are special," Kelly responded with a grin. "But other than that, you are the ones we trust." She paused, gauging their reactions. "I was thinking that if we got close enough to the planet the Wraiths are on, I would find them. But, with as many planets as there are, it would take too much time. However, Tyria is adept, so Luke and Corran should be able to find her. The plan is for us to fly out in pairs, checking three planets each. The wingman is there for cover. Corran, Luke and I will not be aware of anything just outside our ships when we are scanning the surface. When we find where they are, we'll come back here and ready out landfall plan."
"Aren't X-Wings going to be a bit obvious," asked Wedge.
"We've already thought of that. Booster has a few flights of TIEs he uses for, um, special occasions. He has offered six for us to use."
"Smart girl." Wedge smiled at her.
Kelly smiled back. "Thanks. We will drop out as soon as we get out of hyperspace. Booster has promised to let us know thirty minutes before the reversion so we can get ready."
It was an interesting looking group in the TIE hangar. The three Jedi and their wings were dressed in traditional TIE pilot gear. The black uniforms were a stark contrast to their usual neon-orange jumpsuits. Most of the Rogues were there to see them off along with General Solo, Chewbacca and Mirax. Booster was on the bridge, ready to give them the word once out of hyperspace.
"Are you ready?" The quiet words seeped into Kelly's thoughts. She looked up to see Luke standing beside her. He looked so different without his cloak pulled over his face.
"I think so," she finally replied. "I'm just..." She looked off outside the ship. Sighing deeply she continued, "I'm scared Master Luke. What if we're too late?"
"You've not felt anything, right?"
"Yes, but..."
"Then do let go of that. That is the hope that will give you courage."
She nodded.
The rest of the crew walked up to Luke and Kelly. "Ready to go, boss," Wedge asked, looking at Kelly.
"What," Kelly asked confused.
"Well, this was your idea, so that makes you lead," added Corran.
Kelly's brow wrinkled in confusion for a moment, then her eyes set and she took a deep breath. "If I'm lead, TIE One, then Pash is Two. Luke, you and Wedge are Three and Four. Corran and Ooryl are Five and Six. Hmm, half a wing. If we just go by call numbers, we shouldn't attract any unwanted attention."
She noticed the looks on their faces. Huge grins on Luke and Wedge, mass confusion on Corran and Pash and appreciation on Ooryl. "Did I say something wrong," she asked. "Was that not clear enough?"
"That was just fine," replied Luke.
"Couldn't have said it better myself," added Wedge.
"She sounded much like you, Commander," chimed in Ooryl.
Pash and Corran finally shook off their shock and looked at each other. "When did Wedge become a girl," Pash asked Corran.
"I don't know," Corran replied. "I was just going to ask you that."
Wedge gave them both a harsh glare. General Solo walked up with his trademark grin on his face. "What'd I miss?"
"Nothing important," Luke answered with a smile.
"Well, I came to tell you that it's about five minutes to reversion. You guys might want to get ready."
"Thanks, General," Kelly said, trying to regain control of the situation after playfully punching Corran and Pash.
Solo smiled at her, "Call me Han, kid. You're practically family."
She smiled and turned to her squad. "Ok girls, let's go."
As she moved to the TIE, Wes and Myn approached. "Hey guys."
"We just wanted to..." Wes tried in vain to say what he's thinking.
Myn laid a hand on the jester's shoulder. "We know you'll find them. And ALL of them will be safe."
Kelly looked at Wes sending calm thoughts to him. "Shalla's ok, Wes," she said quietly. "She can take care of herself."
"That's not what has me worried," he finally said. "It's that she'll get herself killed trying to help the rest."
Kelly allowed the force to flow through her. She concentrated on the future. A grimace crossed her face quick enough that Wes didn't see. Myn did but said nothing. "In the future I see," she said steadily, "Shalla will be injured, but will survive." She opened her eyes and smiled at Wes. "In one piece, Lieutenant." She stood on tiptoe to kiss her friend on the cheek, then reached up and ruffled his hair.
"Hey!"
She grinned at him. "I'll make sure that future comes true. I really gotta go, guys. This is my party."
Myn offered her a boost into the TIE. She just smiled, bent her knees and jumped, landing perfectly in the seat. She waved to them and they ran towards the observation room.
Strapping herself in and putting on her helmet, she switched the comm on. The familiar sound of her brother's voice crackled through the headset. "Is he ok?"
"He will be. I can't wait to have the old Wes back. Love and worry doesn't suit his jesting very well." She began the startup sequence.
Pash's distinctive snort cut through the comm. A chuckling Corran then spoke, "Uh Wedge? Kelly? I think you two should look at the window of the observation room."
Brother and sister looked up to see a huge banner being held in the window by Wes and Hobbie.
YUB YUB!
They groaned at the joke.
"We've just dropped out of hyperspace," reported Booster from the bridge. "Scans say that you have clear skies."
"Everyone ready," Kelly asked her squad. Each responded positively. She flicked her comm to contact the bridge. "Errant Venture, Kettch One Flight requesting permission to disembark." Grinning from ear to ear, she looked to the observation room, knowing they would have heard what she said. She was rewarded with stunned looks on Wes and Hobbie's faces.
"Kettch Flight," queried the bridge.
"Long story. Have Lieutenants Janson and Klivian tell you. May we leave?"
"Uh... permission granted Kettch One."
Han's distinctive voice piped in, "Good luck and be careful." Everyone could hear the Rogues laughing behind him.
"Thank you, General," responded Kelly. "May the Force be with us. Yub, yub." Grinning broadly, she switched the comm to squad frequency.
Gently she raised the TIE from the deck and flew out to join the rest. "Ok, pair up and let's get started. I hope this goes quick."
Of course it didn't. Three hours later, Kelly and Pash were only two-thirds of the way around their second planet. Nothing. A few plants and small animals, but no Wraiths. Frustrated, Kelly slammed her fist into the console.
Pash switched his comm to a private frequency. "You ok?" The worry in his voice was evident.
Kelly sighed dejectedly. "Yeah. I'm just..." She growled in frustration. "Nothing! Nobody has found anything!"
"Shhh. We'll find them. We're not finished yet."
A crackle of static came across the comm. "Lead, this is Three."
"I copy Three. Find something?"
"A settlement. I'd like to go check it out."
"Alright. You and Four go. Do you think what we're looking for is there?"
"I'm not sure. There's something down there. I just don't know what."
"Ok. Be careful"
"Of course."
With a resigned sigh, Kelly started scanning the planet again. Birds, mammals, reptiles, lots and lots of trees...
"Five to Lead, do you copy," Corran's voice snapped Kelly back into the TIE. "Lead, are you there?"
"I copy Five. What's up?"
"I'm pretty sure I've found our target."
"Really," she asked excitedly. "Transfer your coordinates to me and we'll be right there." Renewed hope coursed through her tired body, reawakening the desire.
The coordinates came too slow for her. Hands flying, she punched them into the navicomp. Two did the same and soon they were off to meet up with Five and Six.
Kelly did a quick scan as she neared the coordinates. Lots of life down there, but it seems to be centralized, she thought to herself.
"Theta quadrant," said Corran. "That's where I think I found her."
Kelly and Pash pulled up near Corran and Ooryl. "Ok," Kelly replied as she began to concentrate. Many minds. Much life, and... Tyria? As soon as she found her, she was abruptly shut off. No Tyria, wait! "Sithspit!"
"What is it," asked Pash.
"I got to her and she... she blocked me."
"I think Luke has been corresponding with her," Corran explained.
"Corran, did you feel something... dark as you were searching?"
"I felt a resistance, yes."
Kelly thought for a moment. "Let me see if I can find Loran or Tainer."
Figuring that Kell wouldn't be far from Tyria, Kelly started where she had sensed her and found... Elassar? She can see his dreams. By the gods! What is he dreaming? A Devorian? Picking daisies? And whistling? She shook her head and moved on.
More dreams. There is a crowd. A restless crowd booing and throwing fruits at a stage. Garik "Face" Loran seems to be the recipient. The images faded into something else. A dogfight. Imps are swarming the familiar Wraith Squadron X-Wings. One by one the Wraiths drop, then Vape squeals and is gone. Failure. Absolute Failure.
Kelly opened her eyes and gasped.
"Kelly," queried Corran.
"Nightmares. Horrendous nightmares."
"Huh?"
"Someone is giving them nightmares."
"Who did you find?"
"Elassar and Face. Trust me. May I never ever in my life see a Devorian picking daisies."
Silence reigned as the others pondered this. A shiver ran down Pash's spine.
Ooryl broke the silence. "And what was Commander Loran dreaming?"
Kelly paused. Coldness ran through her at the memory of what she saw. "Failure," she responded quietly.
That silenced everyone. Eventually the comm crackled to life. "Lead? Two? Five? Six? You out there?" Luke's voice cut through the haze.
Kelly snapped out of it. "Lead here, Three. We found our objective. Making scans now. You and Four go on back. We'll be right behind you."
"Roger Lead. Be cautious. I sense something isn't quite what it seems."
"We'll make it quick then. Lead out." Kelly restarted the engines. "Five, you're with me. Two and Six, stay here. We're going to make a quick scan."
Pash's voice came over Kelly's private channel. "Are you sure that's safe?"
"What, you don't trust Corran," she asked teasingly.
"That's not it. I just..."
"We'll be fine." She flipped her comm back to open. "Ready Five?"
"Right behind you Lead."
Antilles' and Horn's TIEs descend into the planet's atmosphere. "This is weird," said Kelly. "There seems to be three continents, but only one is..."
"I noticed that." Corran suddenly realized Kelly stopped in mid sentence. "What is it?"
"Pull up!" Kelly's TIE turned up abruptly.
Corran pulled up without asking. He followed Kelly back a few kilometers from where they turned. "What was that for?"
"There's something there. Look for it through the Force."
Corran summoned the power to himself and projected it forward to the spot where they pulled up. The trees and lake he saw before were gone. Nothing but blackness was before him. "What the?"
"It's the dark side, Corran. I was just scanning for life when I felt coldness. Like what Luke told me about when he was training with Yoda. The tree."
"I think we need to get out of here."
"I couldn't agree with you more." The two TIEs pulled into a sharp climb and quickly left the surface.
The darkness smiled. Fresh minds.
Four TIEs landed in the bay and the pilots quickly got out and moved towards the three figures standing huddled talking.
The three turned to see the approaching pilots. Luke immediately sensed distress. "What happened, Kelly?"
She finally is in enough light that Wedge can see how pale her face is. "Are you ok?" He moved to her side.
"I'm ok. It's just..." Kelly looked about, her eyes not quite focusing. "We need somewhere private to speak."
The third figure, General Solo, turned and saw the look in her eyes. "Let's go to my quarters." He had seen that look before on Leia. Something happened out there and it wasn't good.
The seven moved towards the habitation deck. Kelly hoped against hope that Wes didn't intercept them.
Wedge noticed the look on her face. He unclipped his comlink from his belt and flipped it on. "Tycho. Get Janson and Donos as far away from General Solo's quarters as soon as possible. Don't ask questions, just do it."
Kelly looked up at her brother and smiled appreciatively. "Thanks. How did you know?"
"Hey, I'm your brother. I'm supposed to know these things."
They made it to Solo's quarters unhindered. Once inside, Kelly told them everything. "Something's down there, Master Luke. It's saturated with the dark side."
Luke still sat as he has the entire time. Fingers templed before his lips, eyes in deep concentration. Everyone watched to see what he had to say. The silence was overwhelming.
Kelly, barely repressing the fear she felt rising within her, watched Luke, trying to read his thoughts.
Wedge finally broke the silence. "Perhaps this ties into what Luke and I found."
"What was that," asked Han, his eyes remaining on Luke, the worry evident on his face.
"Well, most of the planets we checked were like what Kelly described, just plants and animals. The one we went to check out wasn't much different. Just that there was some sort of settlement down there. No life forms, however. Luke," he looked at his friend, "said he felt something strong in the Force."
"The opposite of what you and Corran saw." Luke's silence was broken. He looked directly into Kelly's eyes and sent visions of what he saw to her. The green fields. The flowers, so colorful. The warmth and energy of the light side of the Force.
Kelly finally relaxed. "It's beautiful," she softly exclaimed.
The beginnings of a smile crossed Luke's face. "I think I know what happened." When all eyes were focused upon him, he continued, "A great battle was fought between a dark Jedi and a light Jedi. Simultaneous death blows caused their souls to penetrate the life of these two planets."
Han looked at his brother-in-law skeptically. "What does that mean? In terms the rest of us can understand."
Luke grinned. "I've told you how Obi-Wan can come to me as a vision. A part of his soul is left on this plane of existence. Basically, the same happened to those two Jedi, but it is their entire soul."
"They can't physically control their surroundings, other than, say, plant life or small organisms, but they can control others to do what they want," Kelly looked to Luke for confirmation.
"Yes. They can influence weak minds as Obi-Wan did in Mos Eisley or I did at Jabba's Palace."
"But the dark Jedi has found a way to stronger minds," added Corran. "Give them nightmares to weaken them."
"It seems that way."
Ooryl spoke up, "Then the Wraith's are at risk."
"They're in a lot of trouble," said Kelly. "Especially Tyria. The path to the dark side will open to her as a way to relieve herself and the others from this nightmare. But..."
"You do not feel she has taken that path," finished Luke.
Kelly met Luke's eyes, a look of astonishment on her face. "No, I don't. I really think it was accidental that I made contact with her at all."
"I have been teaching her defenses against such things."
"It seems it was a good thing you did," added Wedge.
"So, what are we going to do," asked Pash.
"We're going to save the Wraiths," answered Kelly.
"Well, I've found some information on this planet," Han said. "Dregos VI. It's always been under Imp control. The only inhabited place is the largest of three continents. It's a large spaceport. A lot of traders go in and out of there. The 'city', if you can call it that, is called Taleria, named after some self-proclaimed Moff from back in the early days."
"I've got a map here." He brought up the map in 3D above the table. "The spots in green are landing zones."
"I don't think if you took all the space stations in Corellia and put them together they'd be as big as this place," Kelly said in awe.
"It does look like it," Han continued. "The 'city proper' covers about a third of the continent."
"That's a lot of area to cover," said Pash.
Kelly stared at the map, occasionally looking down for the name of a place or a distance. Everyone around her was discussing options to which she is oblivious. She tapped a key on her terminal pad to light up a place near the center of the city. Her monitor told her that she has chosen a cantina known as The Hive. It was described as being the hottest establishment in Taleria. They offer a variety of food and drinks for all walks of life. Perfect, she thought.
"Kelly?" Pash's voice cut through the haze. She looked up to see everyone looking at her. "What do you think?"
She looked around at everyone, realizing they must have come to a decision on what to do. She had no idea what the plan was, but she was sure that she wouldn't be involved in rescuing the Wraiths with their plans.
"I think..." She stopped, not knowing how to start. She sighed, resigned to do what she felt was right.
"To be honest, I don't know what you're talking about. I've come up with my own plan. I think we should still have the original four to go down with backup.
"We'll split into two groups of four. One group will go down in the mock-Falcon and the other with Mirax in the Skate. They will land on opposite sides of the city and search for the Wraiths, meeting here." She pointed to the spot still lit on the map. "That's The Hive, a cantina in the center of the city. We all will carry a PTP link. If anyone sees any of the Wraiths, you can let the others know." She paused to take a breath.
"It would not be wise for you to go down there, Kelly," Luke said quietly.
Kelly's head snapped to look at him, fire in her eyes. "I am not going to sit here when I can do something to help them."
"It's too dangerous."
"I know what's going to happen." She tapped her chest in emphasis, "I can stop it!"
The rest of the room sat in stunned silence as the two Jedi argued.
"You will be too open," Luke said calmly, no emotion on his face. "Your emotions are to be your downfall."
Kelly stood and leaned over with her hands on the table looking at Luke, seething. "Don't give me that shit, Luke Skywalker. You followed your feelings to Bespin, ignoring Yoda and Obi-Wan!"
"And you know what the consequences of that were," Luke emphasized with a wave of his gloved mechanical hand.
"Yeah? Well, I'm not in the middle of training."
"Yet you are not fully trained."
Luke's calmness was wearing her patience thin. He knew what was at stake, but he still wanted to play Jedi Master. Kelly was close to storming out and going to save them alone.
"Stop it," Wedge interrupted, standing, voice raised.
Kelly froze, hearing her father's voice. She shut her eyes tightly, forcing back the flood of tears threatening to emerge.
"Kelly, sit down." He was angry and frustrated.
She sighed heavily, shoulders sagging, and then sat in her chair. She leaned back and crossed her arms defiantly over her chest, hair falling across her face hiding her eyes. A tear escaped and she grit her teeth in hopes of preventing more from falling.
Wedge watched her. The pain in his eyes shows the battle of trying to choose between his sister and his friend. He was mad at her for acting like a child in front of these people, but he also sympathized with her. He wanted to find the Wraiths, too. He shook his head sadly. "We all want to see the Wraiths how safe. But yelling about it won't help."
"Agreed," Luke said softly.
Kelly nodded, letting more hair fall forward. It was getting harder to hold back the tears. She didn't want them to see her crying. Pash scooted closer to her and laid a hand on her knee. She shifted to lay her head on his shoulder.
"Ok then," said Wedge, noticeably relaxing. "Kelly's plan sounds good."
"I still think it's dangerous for her to go into that darkness."
Kelly's body became rigid as she sat up. Her anger penetrated the room.
"Luke," started Wedge, "there have been many times when I've seen Kelly so angry you would have thought she had gone over to the dark side. Her temper rivals that of a Trandoshan.
"She's never gone over. It would be easy for her to, but she hasn't. She always has control."
"Luke," Kelly spoke weakly, then cleared her throat. "Veggie knows. I wanted things easy at one time."
She straightened in her chair and ran a hand through her hair, pushing it back from her face. Tear streaks ran down her cheeks. "That's when I ran away from home. I found out that nothing was easy. I came home and found nobody was there, my parents killed, my brother was gods know where. I now had lost everything. I made the decision then that I was going to work hard for everything. I hated that the last time I ever saw my parents I had yelled at them. I still feel guilty about that. Despite my temper, I always think things out before I jump into something. I know this is going to be dangerous, but I'm going to save the Wraiths, no matter what happens."
In the silence that followed, everyone reflected on his or her own life. Could they make that same claim? Luke studied Kelly. She had calmed down, but was shaking. She's right, he thought to himself. She is the most courageous and stubborn woman I've ever met. Next to Leia. That thought brought a small grin to his face, which he suppressed quickly. "This will be a test."
I know," Kelly responded, returning his gaze.
"It will be the most difficult ever."
"It will be harder if I don't do anything."
"True. Are you ready for this?"
"More ready than I've ever been in my life."
Luke nodded, "Then let's get everyone together to plan this out." He turned towards Han and Wedge. "I believe Kelly's plan is approved?"
Han and Wedge looked at each other. Han shrugged. "Ok," said Wedge. "Let's get this finalized."
Kelly stood in the refresher in her room crying her eyes out. She got through the rest of the planning session without a hitch. Everything went about as planned. Then why was she crying? At least the water washed the tears away. A few more minutes passed and she finally stepped out and slipped into her robe. She took a towel and began drying her hair.
Knock, knock
"Come in!"
Her door opened and a bouquet of flowers with legs stood in the doorway. They moved into the room and Pash's voice wafted from behind the flowers. "I thought you might like these." He handed them to Kelly, a big soft smile on his face.
"They're beautiful." She took them from him and breathed in the sweet fragrance. "Where did you find them?" They were already in a vase, so she sat them on her desk.
"Unbelievably, Booster has a greenhouse on this tub."
"I believe it." Kelly started to brush out her hair.
Pash just watched her, finding more and more about her to love. She's beautiful, graceful, caring, a damn good pilot. Ok, so she has a temper, but who doesn't.
"What?" She noticed him staring.
He blinked, embarrassed. "Nothing. Are you ok?"
"Why do you ask?" She moved to the closet to get a clean uniform.
"Because I care," he responded quietly.
She stopped and looked out at him. Time seems to pass slowly. Finally she smiled, "I'm better than I was earlier."
Pash realized he'd been holding his breath and released it. She went back into the closet. He stood and walked over to her, sliding his arms around her. She dropped the uniform she just picked out and turned around to face him. On tiptoe with her hands on his shoulders, she kissed him full on the lips. He returned the kiss with his entire being.
Continuing to kiss him, she slid her hands down his chest then over to the belt of her robe. She untied it and shrugged the robe off to stand naked before him.
He looked at her, brushing a strand of hair from her eyes. "You are so beautiful." He kissed her again.
She wrapped her arms tightly around him. She knew she should feel cold, but she doesn't. This is the most incredible feeling she's ever had in her life. For the first time since she ran away from home at age fifteen, she felt love.
All Rogue members please report to the briefing room. All Rogue members please report to the briefing room.
Kelly and Pash both sighed. She leaned her head on his chest. He held her tight, "C'mon sweetheart. We need to go."
She looked up into his eyes. "I love you."
He smiled. "I know."
Fifteen minutes later, dressed and composed, Kelly stood in the front of the briefing room with Wedge and Corran. She fidgeted a little since she always had been uncomfortable with public speaking. This wasn't public. These were her peers who were just as dedicated as she to find the Wraiths.
The last few stragglers ran through the door. Kelly smiled and winked at Pash. "Ok, let's get started."
Kelly moved forward and switched on the holoprojector. A three-dimensional image of a planet appeared. "Dregos VI. It's an ordinary Rim planet with three continents. The largest of which," she clicked a switch to bring up the next image, "is covered by Taleria, a spaceport city. Somewhere in this city are the Wraiths.
"We were unable to pinpoint their location, so we are going to have to search through the city. Two crews will land on either side and meet at The Hive." Another click lit up the area of the cantina in green. "It's a cantina that caters to all walks of life. We figure that the non-human members of Wraith may spend some time there gathering information from others of their race."
She paused to give anyone who had questions time to ask. Everyone seemed to be hanging onto her every word. No one spoke, so she continued, "The two ground crews will be led by Lieutenant Horn and myself." She gestured towards Corran who nodded.
"Team one will be Lieutenant Horn, Commander Antilles, and Lieutenants Donos and Sei'lar. They will arrive on planet on the Pulsar Skate with Captain Terrik, er, Horn." She grinned wide at Mirax. Several people chuckled.
"Team two will be Lieutenants Janson and Klivian, Flight Officer Forge and myself. We will arrive on the mock-Falcon with General Organa, er, Solo." Her smile was even bigger this time and many of the assembled burst out laughing while others groaned at her intentional joke. Kelly looked at Han who just grinned, eyes twinkling. Chewbacca seemed to laugh the most.
As everyone settled down, she continued. "Ok, the Skate will land here," a blue spot appeared on the map, "and search from this side. The Falcon will land here," another blue spot appeared, "and will search this side.
"The groups will have two PTP links among them. They have limited range, but enough so that we can stay in touch with our respective ships and each other. The plan is to search and meet at the Hive at 1900. If we haven't found anyone by then, we'll find a place to stay and start out again the next day."
Asyr looked contemplative. "What if we do find them?"
"Do not approach them," answered Corran. "You could blow their cover. Let them see you. If they approach, then you can find out what's going on. My suggestion would be to have them get in touch with the rest of the squad and meet us at The Hive."
"Good idea Corran," said Kelly. "I think if we can at least get them to send Commander Loran to The Hive, we'll learn more about what they know." She turned off the holoprojector and took a deep breath. She had been dreading telling this since they got back.
"There is one other thing." She waited until all eyes were on her. She looked to Luke for support. He nodded. You know what you must do. His voice echoed through her thoughts. "There is a complication in this that I must tell you about. Not only do we have Imperials to deal with; there is also the presence of a dark Jedi on this planet.
"Some time ago, two Jedi, one light and one dark, fought in this system. They both made death strikes at the same time. Due to the incredible explosion in the Force, both Jedi's souls were transferred into a planet. The light Jedi on Dregos IX and the dark on Dregos VI."
"What exactly does that mean," asked Tycho Celchu.
"It means that they have literally become the planets. They can control the land and small organisms. However, we fear the dark Jedi can influence the weak minded in Taleria."
"That does make for a problem." Tycho's brow knitted in thought.
"So," started Gavin Darklighter, "what are the rest of us going to do while the eight of you are having fun?"
"The rest of the Rogues are to be back-up in case something happens," answered Wedge. "You may get the chance to take out an Imperial base."
Gavin nodded and sat back smiling. He was happy with that answer.
"Ok, that's it. Any other questions?" Kelly was met with silence. "Good. Corran and I would like to meet with the ground crews now to discuss covers and disguises. We will be leaving at 0700 in the morning. Everyone else is free to go."
Kelly looked around the table at the grim determination on everyone's face. Luke stayed to hear the plans, though he sat in a corner away from everyone. Han and Mirax were also there.
She had filled everyone in about the dreams she had seen and told of the theory on them. Being true Rogues, they took it in stride. Kelly wasn't sure if that was good or bad. She was worried most about Wes. When she started telling them, he looked at her angrily. She felt a pang of remorse as she looked him in the eyes. I couldn't, Wes. I couldn't tell you.
Kelly brought a hand up to rub her eyes and sat back in her chair. Wedge leaned close and whispered, "Are you ok?"
She just nodded. "Corran," she looked over at her friend. "I know you aren't trained as a Jedi yet, but that's never really stopped you before. I have asked Master Luke to teach you the mind blanking technique he taught Tyria, if that's ok with you."
He nodded. "That's a good idea. But what about everyone else?"
"I don't think he can affect awake minds. If you are in control of your conscious mind, he cannot infect you. However, when you are asleep, you surrender your consciousness. I don't think anyone here will have problems. I feel these are the strongest minds in Rogue Squadron." She waved her hand to encompass the table. "Some in all the New Republic."
Inyri Forge shifted uneasily in her seat. "I think you made a mistake in choosing me."
Kelly looked straight in Inyri's eyes. "You've lived in a nightmare almost your entire life. Kessel is no vacation spot." Inyri dropped her head. "I'm sorry for being so blunt, Inyri."
"She's right," added Han Solo. "I've been there. I've seen what it's like."
Corran turned to her, "You're even stronger than your sister, Inyri." He lay a hand on her shoulder. "You can and will succeed."
Inyri looked up at Corran, tears in her eyes. "You think so?"
"If you don't feel you can do this," said Kelly. "If you don't feel comfortable, you can choose to stay here. We will try to find a replacement."
Inyri sighed at looked from Corran to Kelly. "If you have that much confidence in me, I can at least try."
Corran and Kelly both smiled. "I'm glad. Besides, I need someone to help me keep Wes and Hobbie under control," Kelly looked at the boys. Hobbie had a stupid grin on his face, but Wes just sat there. Her chest clinched again.
"We will take Whistler and Winger along with us for slicing purposes. Whistler has taught Winger a lot about slicing code. Winger has taught Whistler, well, a lot of things Corran probably doesn't want to know."
Silence loomed in the room. Kelly finally broke it. "Anyone have any questions?"
"Disguises," Asyr asked bluntly.
"Ah yes, thanks for reminding me Asyr." Kelly handed everyone a data card. "Booster was kind enough to create identities and cards for all of us, including Mirax and General, um, Han. The Skate crew will be just that, a ship crew on leave to get into some trouble. Do you remember how to do that, Wedge?" She looked at her brother grinning.
Wedge raised an eyebrow at her. "Do you doubt?"
"No, just making sure. The mock-Falcon is a charter ship called the Centurion Eagle. It is arriving to bring two young couples to Taleria." She looked at her group. Inyri blushed, Hobbie grinned deviously and Wes cocked an eyebrow at her. "These four are just 'checking out' the galaxy. Rich spoiled brats. I think we can handle that."
"Uh," Hobbie winked. "Who's gonna be with whom?"
"Well, you're with me. That way if we need to split up, we'll have one former Wraith in each group."
Wes nodded in approval, "That's a sound idea."
"I'm glad you approve. We'll have idents made in the morning before leaving. That way we can alter our appearances in any way by then."
The fur on Asyr's neck rippled. She wasn't happy with that idea.
"You don't have to Asyr, but your markings are unique. Perhaps some clothes to cover them."
Asyr nodded. "That is acceptable."
"Any more questions?" Kelly was again met with silence. "Good. See you all at 0700."
Kelly stopped Inyri before she left. "Can I talk to you for a moment?"
She nodded and stepped back from the doorway.
After everyone had left, Kelly closed the door so she could have some privacy. "I have a favor to ask."
"Name it. I owe you one anyway."
"Keep a close eye on Wes. He's really angry with me for keeping all of this from him. I know he's worried about Shalla, but," she sighed and sat down. "If he sees her, I'm afraid he'll try to approach her. Don't let him." She grabbed Inyri's hands and looked up into her eyes.
"Love makes you do stupid things. Wes is very intelligent, but... If it were Pash down there, my first thought would be to go in full throttle. I know better now and I hope Wes does too. Don't let him break her cover. Do whatever it takes. Knock him upside the head if you have to."
Inyri smiled at Kelly, "I will. You care a lot for Wes."
"Yes," Kelly smirked at the memory. "I've known him since I found Wedge right after the first Death Star."
"No wonder his attitude is affecting you so much."
"Yeah. Speaking of which, I'm going to go find him and explain. Thanks for helping me with this."
"No problem." They both left feeling better.
Kelly searched everywhere she could think of for Wes. Nobody had any idea where he was. It took a while, but she finally came up with where he could be.
She walked quietly into the shooting range and saw Wes, a pile of used power packs at his feet. She felt the guilt again and forced herself to walk towards him.
He had long since slagged whatever he was shooting. Now, he just fired at the wall. A continuous stream of bolts ricocheted around the room. He dropped the spent clip from the blaster and reached for another. Finding nothing there, he just flung his weapon out into the range.
Kelly shifted uneasily and cleared her throat to let him know she was there. Wes quickly turned, his hand reaching for the spot the blaster should be. "What can I do for you, Lieutenant?"
The first dagger hit home. Kelly was taken aback by his use of her rank rather than her name. He was happy that his ploy worked. She was off guard. "I..." She faltered. She didn't know what to do. Flustered and getting angry, she used the Force to trigger the button to put up a target in the range. Faster than he ever had, she drew her blaster and fired twenty quick shots around him.
He flinched, but she adjusted her aim, never hitting him. After the last bolt was fired, he just stared at her. Finally, he turned to see a perfect outline of himself on the target. She reholstered her blaster. "I came to apologize, Lieutenant," she said with as much venom as he had. Reaching out with the Force, she brought his blaster to her hand and held it out to him. "I didn't tell you because I didn't know anything about Shalla."
Wes turned back to her. "Nice shooting."
"I had a good teacher."
Several years ago, he had taught her how to be a crack shot. He winced at the memory. He was supposed to be angry with her. Bringing up old memories wasn't helping. She stood there, stock still, holding his blaster out to him. Was her hand shaking?
"Wes, we've known each other for, what, about 6 or 7 years now? You were there when I saw Wedge for the first time in nearly five years." She paused and took a ragged breath, tears welling in her eyes. "We've been through a lot together. You're my family. You, Wedge, the Rogues, the Wraiths, that is my family."
A tear fell and hit her on the hand. "Oh god, now look at me. I've turned into a driveling idiot." She began to cry. "I hate you being mad at me."
Wes took the blaster from her hand and tossed it aside. He pulled her into a hug. She disappeared in his arms. It was just like when he used to hold his sister Siee. Kelly was so much like a sister. How could he be mad at her? He just held her, trying to calm her down.
"Kelly," he started. "I... I never have been in love until... Well, until Shalla showed interest. I didn't want to be in love. Not like that. I love flying. I love snapping off a few quick shots with a blaster at Stormies. But this... this was different. She lowered my guard. I..." It was his turn to falter.
"You left yourself open and you liked it," Kelly said huskily. She sniffled and continued. "I was the same way with Pash." She pushed back from him to look in his eyes. "It WILL work out."
Wes looked into her eyes and saw the determination he saw the day he first met her during the evacuation of Yavin and many times after that. She was right as usual.
Kelly felt the relief wash over him. She smiled, "Um, I could use some lightsaber practice. Care to fire a few shots at me? Don't worry about hitting me, I will be fine. You might want some armor though. I haven't perfected my blocks."
Kelly Antilles and Wes Janson both leaned against the bulkhead panting. "Wow, that was a good workout," Kelly said in between breaths. "Sorry I singed your hair." She reached over and touched the spot where the deflected bolt narrowly missed Wes' ear. Some of the hair disintegrated in her fingers. "Oops!"
Wes chuckled. "It's ok. Your aim is getting better."
"I was aiming for your blaster." They both broke out in laughter. "I feel so much better. Thanks."
"No, thank you. You pulled me out of a rut."
Kelly leaned back and closes her eyes. She concentrated on slowing her pulse to normal. "What time is it?"
Wes looked at his chrono, "Um, it's 1640."
"We missed lunch. You hungry?"
"As hungry as a Gundark in mating season."
"Wow, that's impressive," she grinned. She stood quietly for a moment more. "I have an idea." Kelly moved over to a comm station and called the bridge.
"This is Lieutenant Antilles. I need to speak to Booster, please."
"Sure thing Lieutenant," responded the Twi'lek bridge officer. He immediately patched her to Booster's office.
"Terrik here," he said rather annoyed.
"Uncle Booster?"
A smile crossed the old man's face as he recognized Kelly's voice. "Hi princess! What can I do for you?"
"I need a favor." Kelly told Booster her plan. Wes added details along the way. Within fifteen minutes the whole thing was ready and Booster sent a crew to get everything together. Wes and Kelly smiled at each other as they headed out the door to go invite guests to dinner.
Just outside the firing range, they ran into Gavin Darklighter and Asyr Sei'lar. Wes walked up to them, "Hey, have you had dinner yet?"
They looked at Wes curiously and Asyr answered. "No, we actually were on our way."
"Well," Kelly said as she walked up. "We're having a semi-formal dinner for the Rogues in the lounge. It should be ready in about forty-five minutes. I would love for you to come."
Gavin raised an eyebrow. "Semi-formal? Why?"
"I just thought everyone needed to pretty up and have some fun," Kelly grinned fiendishly.
Asyr's fur rippled. "That sounds acceptable." She and Gavin moved on towards their quarters to change.
"No uniforms," she and Wes yelled in unison.
Next, Inyri Forge, Myn Donos, Hobbie Klivian and Ooryl Qyrrg passed them in the hall. They invited them and told them to spread the word to everyone but Wedge. Then they all moved to their rooms to change.
Back in her room, Kelly called Pash and told him to meet her in the lounge in an hour. When he questioned, she just told him to dress comfortable, no uniform, and meet her there. Then she showered and dressed.
Wes beat her to the lounge, Kyoi on his arm. They walked in and the place looked so different. It looked more like a steamy cantina than a lounge. Kelly came in right behind them. "Perfect," she said delighted.
Wes turned around and had to do a double take. "Who are you and what have you done with Kelly?" He grinned at the unusual sight before him.
"What? Do you not like it?" She pirouetted, showing off her forest green full-length dress.
Wes blinked, "I've never seen you dressed up. Most of the formal functions we've ever been to require dress uniform. You look stunning."
Kelly grinned. "Thanks. I just wanted to make sure everything was set up. I owe Booster big time for this."
"Yeah. Looks like two sabbac tables and a couple of holo-chess tables are in the back corner. The food looks delicious."
"You go eat and greet our guests, then. I need to go get the extra special guests. Did you talk to Tycho?"
"He's supposed to go talk him into going for a drink in the lounge."
"Good. I'll be back shortly. If Pash gets here before I get back, tell him to have a good time and I'll be here soon." She turned and left.
Walking down the hallway brought back the memories of too many hours ago. She stopped in front of General Solo's door, checked her dress and rang the bell.
"Come in," Solo's voice sounded stressed.
Kelly stepped in and looked around. Han was sitting on the couch looking at pictures of Leia. He shifted through several pictures of Leia and himself. Finally, he looked up and saw her. A raised eyebrow was his only response.
"Um, General Solo, I have come to cordially invite you to a high stakes sabbac game being held in the lounge. There are several Rogues who say they can kick your butt."
"If this is just a sabbac game, then how come you're all dressed up?"
"Because it isn't just a sabbac game. It's also a dance, dinner and any other things anyone can come up with to relax."
He grinned. "This should be interesting. If you'll hang on a second, I'll go change." He stood and moved towards the bedroom.
"That's not necessary, sir. You look perfect. The request was no uniforms and no flight suits." She paused, looking Han over and smiled. "And besides, I've always been partial to the Corellian Blood Stripe."
He moved back to switch the album to a picture of Leia in the throne room on Yavin.
"She has always been so beautiful," Kelly commented.
Han looked up and smiled. "Yeah, she is."
Kelly made an unexpected turn down a hallway. Han, confused, turned to her. "Where are we going?"
"Oh, I'm sorry. I failed to tell you that we are going to go drag your brother-in-law along with us."
Han grinned at the image of Luke that popped into his head. "You have your work cut out for you, kid."
"I know," she said as they stopped in front of Luke Skywalker's door. She knocked three times, then twice and waited.
The door opened and she stepped in, head lowered in respect. "Master Luke," she queried to the darkness.
"Yes, Kelly." Luke stepped into the light wearing his familiar black and gray flight suit. "You look very nice."
"Thank you." She glanced back into the hallway but didn't see the General anywhere. "I'm here for two reasons. One, I wanted to apologize. I acted rashly and was not one with the Force when I spoke."
"It is forgotten. I meditated on what you said. You were right. We are much alike. What else do you need?"
"I need you to escort me to the lounge."
"Why?"
"Because you need to have as much fun as possible tonight with the rest of us."
"I don't understand."
Kelly reached out and took his hand. "It isn't yours to understand. Just come on." She dragged him into the hallway.
Han stepped from his hiding place beside the door smiling. "I told you it wasn't going to be easy."
Luke looked at his sister's husband curiously. "You did?" He held out his arm for Kelly.
She took the offered arm then grabbed Han's arm. The three moved down the hall.
Kelly, Han and Luke walked into the lounge. Almost everyone had arrived. They heard Chewbacca growling from one of the holo-chess tables where he seems to be playing against Whistler and Winger.
Kyoi walked up and spoke to Luke. "Would you care to dance, Master Skywalker?"
"Uh."
Han slapped Luke on the shoulder, "Go on kid."
Luke looked at him and shrugged. He held out his hand to the Twi'lek and lead her to the dance floor.
"Well," said Han. "I hear the sabbac cards calling me." He moved towards the back, leaving Kelly by herself.
She smiled as she saw Pash moving in her direction. "Hi handsome."
"Wow, you look great." He spun her around to get a look at the dress.
"Thanks. What do you think?"
"I think you look beautiful." He pulled her into his arms.
"No," she giggled. "I mean about the party."
"It's wonderful." He kissed her gently on the lips. "I'm glad you and Wes made up."
"Me too. It was tearing me up. I wasn't concentrating on what was happening. I'm sorry."
"It's ok, I understand."
Kelly's comlink suddenly beeped. "Antilles here."
"On my way to pick up the surprise," Tycho's voice came through.
"Ok, beep when you get to this hall."
"Will do. Celchu out."
"What was that about," asked Pash.
"Oh nothing. Come on, let's get some food. I'm starving."
Kelly had just taken her first bite of the chocolate silk pie when her comlink clicked three times, then again and once more. She jumped up from the table she was sharing with Mirax, Corran and Pash. "They're on their way."
Mirax stood and yelled, "INCOMING!!"
Kelly ran to her place and Wes and Hobbie flanked her. Everyone else got into a good vantage point near the door. Kyoi moved to the light panel and touched it. Darkness and silence reigned.
"Just one drink. I have a lot to work on," Wedge said to his XO.
"Yeah, just one. I promise." They arrived at the door to the lounge. Tycho gestured with his arm. "After you, Commander."
Wedge opened the door and took one step into the darkness. "What's wrong with the lights?"
The lights came on and everyone yelled "SURPRISE!" Wedge looked around in amazement seeing all his friends. "What's going on," he asked.
Kelly approached him and gave him a hug. "Happy birthday, big brother. I know it's not until next week, but who knows what will be happening then. And besides, we all needed a good time. We're going to be very busy tomorrow."
Wes stepped up behind her and laid a hand on her shoulder. "Yep. She's right, boss. And you can't back out. You HAVE to see the cake we had done for you." He grinned broadly.
Wedge stared blankly at Kelly and Wes. "Yes, we made up," Kelly answered his unasked question.
"Well, I knew you two couldn't stay at each other's throat for too long," he responded with relief.
Hobbie walked over and started ushering Wedge towards the bar. "Now come on. You have to see the spread we've got."
Tycho smiled at Kelly after Wedge left. "You did it. You got him."
"Yeah, I did," she said grinning.
"You know, you clean up pretty good."
"Gee thanks." She playfully punched him.
"Would you care to dance?"
"I'd be honored." Tycho lead her towards the dance floor.
The rest of the party went wonderfully. Everyone had a great time, even Chewbacca, who ended up actually beating Whistler and Winger. He expressed his gratitude with a Wookie-sized hug for Wedge and Kelly. The festivities lasted late into the night, but the search and rescue group left early to prepare for their trip.
Wedge really liked his Ewok cake. He even started a food fight with Wes.
BUZZ... BUZZ... BUZZ... BUZZ... BUZZ...
Kelly shifted and slammed her hand on the button to silence her alarm. Sighing, she rolled over on her back and looked at the stark gray ceiling. Well, it's almost time. She rolled her head over to the left and saw the back of Pash's head. Rolling the rest of her body towards him, she propped herself up on her left elbow and reached her right hand over to brush his hair from his face. So peaceful. He looks like an innocent child when he's asleep. She smiled and leaned over to kiss him on the cheek.
Pash stirred and his eyes fluttered open. He rolled to look her in the eyes. She leaned down and kissed him on the lips.
"Good morning. Sorry to wake you." Kelly looked him in the eyes.
"It's alright," he said, adjusting more towards her. He reached up and moved her hair from her face. "I wanted to see you off."
BUZZ... BUZZ... BUZZ... BUZZ... BUZZ...
Kelly flopped back frustrated and hit the alarm again, this time turning it off. "Damn. I've got to get ready."
Pash rolled over on top of her and kissed her deeply. "Ok." He paused and looked at her with a devilish grin. "You aren't too tired, are you?"
She pushed him off her and threw the sheet on top of him. "I figured you would be the tired one." Pulling herself out of the bed, Kelly walked into the 'fresher. Hmm, I need a disguise. She pulled a couple of tubes from a drawer then stepped into the shower.
Twenty minutes later she moved back into the room in her robe with a towel on her head. Pash had rolled over and gone back to sleep. She grinned and went to dress and pack.
Pash was asleep on his back when she was ready to leave. She leaned over and kissed him. He woke up and opened his eyes.
Suddenly, he jumped up and out of her reach. "Geez! Who the hell are...? Kelly?" He looked at her curiously. She had died her hair very dark, almost the same shade as Wedge's. He didn't recognize her at first. "You look so different."
"Well, at least it took you took a moment to recognize me. That means the disguise works well enough." She had left her hair down, but now was pulling it back. "I can't stand having my hair in my face."
Pash reached up to help push it back. "It looks nice, but I like to see your eyes."
Kelly smiled and looked at him, "Thanks." After a moment she finally decided it was time to go.
Kelly and Pash strode through the halls to the landing bay. Several of the Errant's crew did a double take as they passed by. They crossed the bay, passing Booster, Mirax and Han who were discussing plans. "Good morning," Kelly said as they went by.
"Good morning, prin...," Booster stopped and looked up. He watched Kelly pass and stood in shock.
"I'm not seeing a ghost, am I," asked Mirax.
Booster replied with a smile, "No."
"Was that Kelly," asked a confused Han.
"Sure was General. And her mother."
Kelly saw Wedge talking to Hobbie, Myn and Wes. She turned to move towards them. Wedge saw her and stopped in mid sentence, staring. She saw Wes move his hand up and down in front of Wedge's face. Hobbie and Myn turned to look. They elbowed Wes, who turned and dropped his jaw open. "Hi guys," Kelly said as she approached.
None of them said a word. Myn looked back and forth between Kelly and Wedge, "The resemblance is uncanny, save for the hair length and the..."
Wes nudged Myn. "You looks great. Doesn't she, Wedge?"
Wedge finally spoke. "I thought it was a ghost."
"I was thinking the same thing," said Mirax as she walked up.
"Why is that," asked Hobbie. "I mean, I know she's scary, but she's no ghost."
"You look just like mother." Wedge moved to Kelly and pushed a few hairs from her shoulder.
"Why do you think I named my first ship Zena's Revenge?" Kelly dropped her bag and hugged her brother. "And besides, if you can sound like dad, then I can look like mom."
"I sound like dad?"
"Yes. In fact, very much so yesterday."
"When?"
"When you scolded me," she whispered to him.
His face softened. "Oh. Sorry about that." He hugged her tighter.
"No, I deserved it."
Wes interrupted the sibling's confessions, "Ok, break it up. We've got work to do."
Kelly reached around Wedge and grabbed Wes by the front of his shirt. She pulled him forward, reached up and ruffled his hair.
"Hey," he protested. "I had that just perfect!"
Everyone laughed. "At least you're acting the part already," said Kelly.
While the ships were being prepped for takeoff, Kelly went over to talk to Corran. "Hi. You ready?"
"Of course," he replied.
"Look, I know this is going to be hard for both of us. But, the Wraiths are very important to me. I know you don't think highly of them, they aren't 'military'. They are my friends, however. They are also very important to Wedge."
Corran stared at her, his jaw set tight. "I'm sorry if I've given you that impression since this whole thing started. I gained new respect for them yesterday when you told us of the nightmares. I've often had nightmares myself. I know how hard it is to continue your mission with that looming in your mind."
Kelly looked at him, impressed by his words. "I apologize then. I spoke out of turn."
"It's ok. I have started to become used to everyone thinking I am so hard and emotionless."
"That's something you shouldn't have to get used to."
Corran shrugged, "Must be my aura or something."
"More likely your background."
"Do you see Iella that way?"
"Hardcore, yes. Unemotional, sometimes. But I have seen her outside of her office. Not many have seen you 'out of uniform', so to speak."
He chewed on her words for a moment then nodded. "I see your point. I guess I have retreated from the others again."
She smiled and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Maybe this outing will get you back in the group." She looked up and saw Mirax at the bottom of the Skate's ramp. "I think your wife is ready to leave."
Corran turned to see her leaning against the gangplank watching them. He smiled.
Kelly called to him as he walked away. "Be careful."
"We will."
Kelly was the last to board the Centurion Eagle. She walked up and saw the luggage sitting outside the hold. "Oh good, it got here."
Chewbacca came around the corner and saw her. He started ranting and pointing at the luggage.
"Hold on, Chewie. This is part of our cover. Do you really think two rich female brats would travel without their entire wardrobe?"
The Wookie cocked his head at her in a questioning manner. He then nodded in agreement then started questioning her again.
"No, they aren't all full of clothes. There is some scanning equipment and some medpacs just in case. Some are mostly empty. They have scanner fooling devices Booster had to make them look like they have woman's clothes in them."
Chewie shook his shaggy head and threw his hands in the air in defeat. He started picking up the bags to load them in the hold.
Kelly stopped him. "I'll get it. You go make sure Han is ready to take off." She smiled and took the bags from him. He started to protest, but she gave him a look that would rival Leia's any day. He knew when to give up. She easily took the bags and dumped them in the hold. He shrugged and moved towards the cockpit.
They made a short jump over to the other side of Dregos VI to fit with their story of Rim world hopping. Kelly stepped into the cockpit as Chewbacca was leaving to go check on the hyperdrives.
"Where's he going," she asked Han.
"Ah, the drives made some weird noise when we reverted. He's gone to check on them."
"I thought I heard something." She looked out at the planet that loomed in the viewport. A chill ran through her, which made her shiver. Han noticed and cut his eyes over to her, but said nothing.
Kelly laid a hand on the back of the co-pilot chair and asked, "Can I sit here?"
"Sure kid." Han watched her from the corner of his eye. She was tense, which was understandable. She had put so much on herself in such a short time. Her determination reminded him a lot of Leia. He cracked a smile, "Not much to look at, is it?"
"Huh?" She snapped out of her reverie and turned to look at him.
"The planet. Pretty drab compared to Coruscant."
"Oh yeah." She looked back out. "It's been a long time since I've been on a ship this size. I started off with a TL-1800 Transport."
"I remember Zena's Revenge. She was a good ship."
"I suppose."
Han turned his attention back to the control panel and Kelly watched their approach. She started humming an old Corellian lullaby her mother used to sing to her.
She thought she was getting louder, but realized Han had joined in. His tenor complimented her alto. When they finished, she looked at him, "My mother sang that to me when I was afraid."
"I used to hear a woman sing that to a child. It always seemed to comfort me."
Kelly smiled. "My mother had the most beautiful singing..." She stopped and looked out the viewport. "It's coming."
Han turned quickly back to his console to check all sensors. "I don't see anything."
"You won't," she said. "I can only see it through the Force. It's evil. Pure evil." A shiver ran down her back and she tensed up. Her hands gripped the arms of the seat so hard Han thought she was going to leave permanent indentions in the pads.
"You ok, kid," he asked quietly. This was starting to remind him too much of the missions he took with Luke back when Darth Vader was still around.
Kelly started to nod then shook her head. She had such a firm grip on the arms of the seat that her muscles were shaking with the strain.
Han began singing the lullaby again. "Sing Kelly. Sing with me."
She tried, but it came out a hoarse whisper. She could feel the darkness begin to wash over her. Han's voice penetrated it. She tried again, this time finding her voice. The tenor and alto melodies blended and pushed back the evil. Han sang louder, so she matched his volume.
Suddenly she stopped, "It's gone."
Han looked at her. "What do you mean?"
"I mean that it's only a shell over the city. It doesn't permeate the entire area."
"You guys ok," a worried voice asked from behind them.
They turned to see Wes standing in the doorway. "The darkness is just a shield," Kelly answered. "I think we'll be ok."
"Good."
Chewie came into the cockpit telling Han to quit talking and get the ship ready to land.
Kelly got up and moved to the door. "Thanks Han," she said as she walked out.
"No problem, kid."
Kelly moved back into the lounge with Wes. Hobbie and Inyri were playing holo-chess against Winger. When the droid saw her, he whined mournfully and rolled over to her.
She stooped and patted him on the dome. "I'm ok, bud. It's gone."
Han's voice came over the ship's intercom. "We've got our landing assignment. You guys should get ready. We'll be landing in about fifteen minutes."
"Guess that's my cue to go change," she said as she stood.
Ten minutes later, Kelly stepped into the lounge dressed in a loose white blouse and very tight black slacks. She had braided her hair from the neck down and had it hanging over her left shoulder. She wore a silver Corellian coin hanging from a chain about her neck.
Inyri had dressed in browns, which complimented her skin tone. She wore a skirt and blouse, which accented her curves and had lots of gold and platinum jewelry on.
The boys' outfits were simple. Hobbie wore black pants, white shirt and a black leather jacket. Wes had brown pants and jacket, but otherwise was the same. Wes wore a few gold chains and some gold and platinum rings. Hobbie had a couple of silver chains and had a silver ring in the shape of a fish. They definitely looked young and rich.
Kelly felt the slight bump letting her know they had landed. "You guys ready," she asked the others.
They nodded as Han walked in. "Gee, you look like all those kids I used to prey on when I was young," he smiled. "Well, you're set. They have a checkpoint as you go into the city. Flash a few creds and you should get through rather easily."
The two couples moved to the exit ramp. Kelly turned back to look at Han. "Thanks for your help."
"You kids be careful."
"Same goes for you. I don't want your wife's wrath if something were to happen."
Han smiled as she was tugged away by Hobbie.
Her smile turned into a frown as she got to the bottom of the ramp. Hobbie winced as she gripped his hand tightly. "You ok," he asked.
"I sense something. A presence I should know, but," she looked about and saw nothing out of the ordinary.
"Come on. They're leaving us." Hobbie tugged and she started walking.
The flash of credits at the checkpoint worked wonders. The guards just glanced at their idents and sent them on with a map of the city and a few recommendations of places to go. Winger downloaded the map and marked the places. He stayed on Kelly's heels and didn't let her out of his sight.
Upon entering the city, they felt like they were on one layer of Coruscant. All the homes, shops, everything were crowded together. They got their bearings and started off in search of the Wraiths.
After two hours of window "shopping", Kelly was getting frustrated. They hadn't spotted any of the Wraiths, but she also couldn't shake the feeling they were being watched. She suggested that they split up for two blocks and meet back up just down the street.
She and Hobbie went left with Winger at their heels. Just inside the side street, Kelly stopped and turned to her R2 unit. She watched Wes and Inyri out of the corner of her eye until they moved out of view. She was about to turn around to leave when she saw movement. A shadow went down the street behind them. She tried concentrating on the area, but found nothing. Maybe they're working in pairs, she thought.
"See anything," asked Hobbie quietly.
She stood and grabbed his arm. They turned and moved on. "Yes. Something followed them. I want to see if there's a pair preying on both of us."
They walked on without incident. Wes and Inyri were waiting where they had agreed. "We were followed," stated Wes as she and Hobbie walked up.
"I know," she replied. "I saw it, but not enough to see what it was. Nothing was behind us. I'm curious now. You weren't stopped and we weren't followed." She looked up and saw a dress shop. "I have an idea."
Several minutes later, Kelly and Inyri were picking out dresses to try on. Wes and Hobbie stood at the door bored, not watching Winger. The droid on cue rolled down the street.
In the changing room, Kelly hung a dress over the surveillance camera and put on the video headset linked to her R2 unit. "Ok, I'm hooked up. See anything?"
Words scrolled across the screen before her eyes. NOTHING YET. THIS CREATURE IS GOOD.
"Keep checking."
WELL DUH. WAIT, MY SENSORS HAVE SOMETHING.
"Give me a visual." Kelly's view shifted to what Winger was seeing. She watched as he turned his head towards an alley. It was too dark for her to see. "Give me infrared."
The sight changed to many colors. A humanoid shape lurked in the shadows. Kelly reached out with the Force. It was a Devorian. Not only that, "That's Elassar!"
SHALL I APPROACH?
"Yes, give him a message. Tell the Master of the Universe that Commander Kettch would like to see him and his companions tonight at the Hive at 19:30."
Kelly watched as Winger rolled towards Elassar. The Devorian moved deeper into the shadows, but the droid pursued. Finally he recognized the colors of the R2 unit and stopped. A toothy grin crossed his face as he bowed to Winger.
The droid popped open an access panel to reveal a display.
I HAVE A REQUEST FOR THE MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE ARE YOU HE?
Elassar grinned, "Why yes I am. How did you know?"
NEVERMIND THAT.
COMMANDER KETTCH REQUIRES YOUR PRESENCE AND THAT OF YOUR COMPANIONS TONIGHT AT THE HIVE, 19:30 SHARP.
He read over the screen and nodded. "19:30 sharp. I will see who I have available to accompany me. Please thank Commander Kettch for his gracious invitation."
YEAH WHATEVER.
Kelly and Inyri met the boys just as Winger rolled up. "Mission accomplished," Kelly said as she patted the droid on his domed head. As she did that, she subtly put the headset back in its compartment.
"What's in the bag," asked Hobbie.
"A surprise. Come on, let's move." Kelly grabbed his arm and moved on down the road.
"Who was following us," asked Wes.
"Just the Master of the Universe," she smirked.
That drew a hearty chuckle from Wes. "Really? He hasn't lost any of his hunter's instinct then."
"Nope. Hey, anyone else hungry?"
Everyone agreed it was time for lunch.
The two couples found a nice little café situated at a busy crossroad. They figured this would be a good place to watch people. The food was pleasant, but the lum was watered down.
Kelly was nursing her lum when she got the feeling she was being watched. Casually she looked at Wes then past him. The crowd was thick, but she found the eyes that were burning into her. She watched until a man moved and unblocked her view. Suddenly, her heart leaped into her throat and she choked on the swallow of lum she had just downed.
"Are you ok," asked Hobbie as he laid a hand on her back.
Coughing to clear her throat, Kelly squeaked out, "Yes." She finally caught her breath and looked back across the street. Gone! Damn. The feeling of being watched hadn't left, however.
"What caused that," asked a worried Wes.
"I thought I saw someone I knew."
"Someone we're looking for?"
"Maybe. Looks, I'm going to go freshen up. That coughing fit took a bit out of me." Kelly stood and headed into the café.
As she turned the corner into the hall where the refresher station was, she saw the one who was watching them. She stopped.
The woman stood leaning against the wall. She was waiting for Kelly, there was no doubt in that. The two women eyed each other. "That look is good on you, Antilles," said the dark-skinned woman.
Kelly smiled. "Thanks, Lieutenant. Are we clear?"
The Lieutenant cocked her head then shook it negatively. "This way," she said as she lead Kelly out a back door.
Once in the alley they hugged each other. "You really startled me, Shalla," said a relieved Kelly.
"I wasn't even sure that was you! You look so much like your brother."
"Yeah, well..."
"How's Wes?"
"Scared for you."
"You didn't tell him you saw me, did you?"
"Of course not. I don't want him going off half cocked and getting us all killed. What's your cover?"
"Never mind that. I think I know what yours is. Let's just say that I'm going to show you around town."
"Ok. We're meeting our other crew at the Hive at 19:00."
"Good choice. Why are you here, anyway?"
"I sensed that the Wraiths were going to be in a lot of trouble."
"How?"
"I'm not sure. The Force showed me a flash of the future. Most of the Wraiths were hurt. Have you been having nightmares?"
Shalla paled. "How do you know?"
"When we found where you guys were, I entered Elassar's and Face's dreams. I know what's causing them."
Shalla suddenly looked up. "We better go." They went back into the café and out the front door.
Wes looked up at their approach and froze. Shalla nearly stopped herself, but Kelly grabbed her elbow and continued forward. "Guys, this is Shal. She's going to show us around this big city."
Inyri smiled. "Oh great. Isn't this great guys?" She elbowed Wes.
"Uh, yeah." He couldn't keep his eyes off Shalla.
"A guide that's easy on the eyes is always good," chimed in Hobbie.
Wes cut his friend a look that could drop a taun-taun. A flustered Hobbie retorted, "Hey, I was only kidding."
Kelly gave Wes a stern look. Chill out, she told him telepathically. He turned his gaze to her. Keep your cool or you'll get us all killed.
An understanding crossed his face and he dropped his eyes to his plate. Pushing it away, he stood and took Inyri's hand. "Let's get moving then. I want to see what kind of fun this town has to offer."
The rest of the day was uneventful. Shal showed them many interesting places, most of which were Imperial spy spots. Kelly had to calm Wes several times, but other than wanting to be with Shalla, he was fine.
When they arrived at the Hive, the place was already jumping. They looked to see if the others had arrived while Shalla went to the bar. She came back a few minutes later and led them to a back room.
Once in the room, Winger popped up his scanner and soon gave an 'all clear' beep. "It better be clean," said Shalla. "I paid extra for it to be." They all sat around the table.
"I'll have Winger go keep a look out for the rest," said Kelly.
"Good idea," said Hobbie. "Droids are less obvious."
She gave Winger his orders and he happily went off to do his job.
It wasn't long before the others arrived and filed into the room. Group A had a guest with them, too. Tyria Sarkin came into the room last. Kelly stood and went to hug her friend. "I'm so glad to see you."
Tyria smiled, "I'm glad to see you too. I understand you know what's going on, why I'm having such a hard time with the Force here."
"Sit down so I can tell you and Shalla at the same..." Suddenly there was a knock at the door. Three times, three more, then twice. Several blasters were drawn, but Kelly waved them back. "I think I know who that is." She slowly opened the door enough to see out. There was Elassar looking cautiously around him. Kelly opened the door and dragged him inside.
The flabbergasted Devorian looked at the assembled group and then smiled. "Ah, so good to see you, Commander. Captain Nelprin, do you know why they are here?"
Kelly shook her head. "Elassar, I was about to tell them."
He turned towards her and bowed. "Then I concede the floor to you, beautiful lady."
"Flattery will get you nowhere, Flight Officer." Kelly waited until everyone was seated before beginning her story. Shalla added what the Wraiths had been doing and added to the nightmare theory.
"It is from the Force, but he has minions on the surface," said Kelly.
"That is true," responded Tyria. "I have felt that there are many Force-sensitive entities here, but I am not sure that they truly are."
"I'm sure they aren't. They are just being used as a conduit for this evil Jedi."
Silence fell over the room as they all considered the possibilities. Kelly stretched back in her chair with her eyes closed. When finished, she stood and moved to the door. "I've got to go to the 'fresher. You guys think about what to do while I'm gone."
Kelly rubbed her eyes as she pushed open the door to the refresher. She was tired and frustrated. This wasn't going well. Her senses went wild as she felt someone behind her. She turned just in time to see the blue stun bolt hit her directly in the chest. Her entire body went numb and she hit the floor. Above her stood a cloaked figure. It stooped to pick her up and dropped something in the process. She tried to scream, but her voice had left her. Everything went black.
Tyria leaned over to Inyri, "Does Kelly usually take so long?"
The other woman looked at her chrono and realized how long Kelly had been gone. "No. She should have been back by now."
"I have a bad feeling about this. Let's go check it out. I'll get Shalla to come with us."
Inyri nodded and whispered to Wedge that they were going to check on Kelly.
Shalla, Tyria and Inyri walked into the refresher. "Kayla, are you ok," asked Inyri as they entered.
Silence answered her. The room was empty. The three women spread out to look for clues.
Shalla spotted something gleaming on the floor. She stooped to see what it was. "Inyri?"
Forge walked over to where she was, "Find something?"
"Recognize this?" Shalla opened her hand to show a small silver earring.
Inyri's knees weakened, but she fought to stay up. "That... that is one of Kelly's earrings. The ones she was wearing."
Tyria laid a hand on Shalla's shoulder, "I don't sense a struggle."
"That's because there wasn't one," Shalla replied. She stood and moved a few feet to the left of where she found the earring. Another shine had caught her eye. She palmed the coin, then went and examined the doorway. "See, there are scuff marks from there to the door where a body was dragged. There are no marks of a scuffle."
The other two examined the floor. "You're right," agreed Tyria.
"Recognize this," she said showing Tyria the coin.
"What's that," asked Inyri.
Tyria took the coin and turned it over in her hand. "It's the calling card of the Dark Ones."
"Can you get anything off it, Tyria," asked Shalla.
Tyria sighed. "Nothing. It's like there's a void in the Force here. Like something is blocking me."
"I'm going to go get Wedge. I think he needs to be the first to know." Shalla turned and moved back to their private room.
She tried to keep her face passive as she opened the door. She avoided looking at Wes because she knew she would collapse if she did. Moving beside Wedge, she leaned and whispered in his ear, "Sir, we need to talk to you. Alone."
Wedge got a worried look on his face and nodded. "I'll be right back," he told the others as he stood.
"What's wrong," asked Corran.
Shalla avoided the question. Wedge just shrugged.
"Kelly's been kidnapped," Wedge asked again in shock. He couldn't believe it. Why would anyone do that? "Any idea who?" He sat down heavily in a nearby chair.
"Possibly. We found this nearby." Shalla handed him the coin. "Tyria couldn't get a reading off it."
He took the coin and held it up to the light. The coin shimmered and an image appeared on its face. I know this, Wedge thought to himself. "The Dark Ones. But why would they want Kelly?" The image continued to bother him. He knew he should know it, but just couldn't place it.
"I don't know. Ransom maybe?"
"If that's the case, they'll make contact with the Centurion Eagle for payment. We need to get somewhere we can contact its captain."
"Tyria will take you and Inyri to the safe house. I will send Elassar with Donos, Horn and Sei'lar shortly then I'll bring Janson and Klivian." Wedge nodded accepting Shalla's decision. She turned to Tyria, "Tell the commander what's going on. See if we can call everyone in. We may need to insert someone else in the Dark Ones.
Tyria nodded and began leading Wedge and Inyri out the back door. "Good luck," said Wedge.
"May the Force be with us."
Shalla took a deep breath after they disappeared out the door. She started towards the room to get Elassar. The Devorian popped up in front of her. She jumped, "Don't do that!"
"Oh, I'm sorry. So, what's the plan?"
"You are to escort Donos, Horn and Sei'lar to the safe house," she whispered. "Tyria has taken the others. Now go."
He nodded curtly and moved back to the room. He leaned over the table where Corran, Myn and Asyr were talking and whispered, "Lieutenants, I am to escort you to somewhere safe. Please follow me."
The three looked at each other and nodded. They stood and followed the Devorian from the cantina.
"What the hell is going on," Wes asked no one in particular.
Hobbie shrugged as Shalla walked into the room. She sat down across from Wes, laying her hands on the table.
"Ok, so where's Kelly," asked Wes.
"She's missing."
"Then why the hell aren't we looking for her?"
"Wes," Shalla said sternly. "This is neither the time or the place to discuss this." She looked him deep in the eyes.
He saw how serious she was and closed his mouth. Hobbie looked just as serious, "Forgive him Shal. Loosing the mascot has upset everything."
"Mascot?"
"When she first joined the Rebellion, she started hanging around with us a lot, running errands, doing anything for her brother. She was around so much we dubbed her the squad's mascot."
"And besides," added Wes. "This is her baby. She's the only one who really knows what's going on, Force wise."
Shalla reached out and took his hand in hers. "She'll be ok. Number one, she's an Antilles, number two, she's a Rogue and a Wraith, and finally she's a Jedi."
He looked her deep in the eyes, "I hope you're right."
A soft mournful warble at his elbow reminded Hobbie that Winger was still there. He turned and looked at the droid, "Hey, maybe he can track her."
Winger rolled back a little, popped up his scanner and began a search. It didn't take long before he moaned pitifully. His dome turned left and right as if shaking his head no. The three others sighed.
A voice chuckled in the darkness. Kelly searched for the source, but saw nothing. She felt oppressed, as if a heavy weight was on her shoulders.
"I am surprised you came back after so long," the voice said.
"What are you talking about," she asked.
"Fool! You know well what I mean. You delivered the blow that made me what I am. Now you finally return and I can have my revenge!"
"Who are you?"
"Quiet witch. I will take care of you when I gain enough power. I am nearly there. Then, I will kill you Shaana Crainden."
A mist filled her vision. "No wait," she cried. Her eyes snapped open. Around her she saw a stark room. Her body was strapped to what seemed to be a medical bed.
"There is no need to struggle," a female voice called from beyond her sight. "Not even a Gundark can break those bonds."
Kelly tried to speak, but her mouth was too dry. She attempted to swallow but found herself dehydrated. Side effect of drugs. Wonderful.
A short furry creature in a dark robe walked over to the table. It picked up a bottle that had what looked like water inside. The creature poured its contents over her mouth. She opened and swallowed. Water! She drank readily, then it stopped. The creature put the bottle down and moved off. "Thank you," she whispered hoarsely to her savior. It stopped, turned and bowed, then moved back beyond her view.
"Being nice to slaves, how quaint," the female voice spat.
"You should try it sometime. The rewards are phenomenal."
Movement to her left made Kelly try to turn her head. The strap on her forehead prevented that. The female chuckled and moved into view. She was human, sort of. Much of her body was covered with cybernetics. Kelly could hear the mechanism of the cyborg's left eye focusing on her. A mechanical taloned hand traced her face. She tried to pull away to no avail.
The cyborg chuckled and turned the talon up on its tip and dug into her skin. Suddenly she screamed and pulled her 'claw' back.
"Problem," Kelly asked nonchalantly.
"The Master wishes you flawless, for now."
"Master? Oh, so you are a slave too. How interesting."
The flesh and blood hand slapped Kelly across the face. "Impudent! I am no slave. I work for the one true ruler. The Master is the One and the All. I follow his bidding."
"Which makes you a slave."
A battle cry emerged from the cyborg's lips as she raised the taloned hand to strike. The claw swiftly descended towards Kelly's chest... and stopped. Mere centimeters from her heart, the cyborg arm froze in place.
"Tsk, tsk. The Master said no blood, Taylin," a masculine voice said from the shadows. A tall cloaked figure moved into view. He fiddled with a control in his hand.
Taylin winced at the sight. Slowly, she backed away from the table and the cloaked figure.
Kelly looked up at the man standing beside her, "Looks like I owe you my life."
"Only for it to be sacrificed at a later time," he said with no emotion.
"Perhaps."
"No, it will happen Shaana Crainden."
"I'm not Shaana. That was my great-grandmother's name."
"No matter. The Master wishes your blood for himself, so he will have it."
Kelly sighed and looks up at the man. He was quite handsome with dark brown hair and soft brown eyes. "Who is this 'Master'"?
"He is the essence of all that is."
The dark Jedi! What does my great-grandmother have to do with this unless... Thoughts flew through her head as she realized the situation she was now in. She had to be the one who defeated him! It must be her essence on that planet Luke found. I must look much like she did when they fought and now he wants his revenge. "Have you ever seen him?"
He cocked an eyebrow and looked at her skeptically.
"A physical presence. Has he ever shown himself to you?"
He looked into her eyes, thinking. They soften as he realizes something. Then, just as quickly, they unfocus and he shakes his head. "That matters not."
"You blindly follow those who'll lead."
"No." He abruptly dropped his eyes and brought up a syringe from the table beside the bed "It's time for your medicine."
"You don't have to do this," she pleaded with him.
"I have no choice."
"You always have a choice."
The needle pierced her skin and plunged into her arm. The drug flowed like fire through her body. Soon she felt nothing.
Kelly drifted herself into meditation. It was hard with the drug pulling her towards unconsciousness, but she felt an urgency that she should meditate instead.
There was darkness. No features of the past, present or future assailed her. Normally, she saw many things when meditating. This time it was a great void. Suddenly a soft light penetrated the darkness. It came closer and closer. An image appeared in front of her. It looked just like she did, only slightly older. "Hello, my great-granddaughter," the image said to her.
"Great-grandmother Shaana? But how?"
"The Force works in many ways, my dear. You cleared me a path through the darkness in order to reach you."
"I did? Oh, great-grandmother. There is an evil Jedi inhabiting this planet. He wants me for some reason."
"It is because you are so much like me. Lord Tarren was my chief rival for many years."
"Lord Tarren. So, he has a name. Wait, I remember that name now. He was the powerful Dark Lord of the Sith that hunted your apprentices."
"Yes, my dear. He did so because I destroyed five of his apprentices. He ended up killing fifteen of mine and myself."
"But you destroyed him in the process."
"Yes, but his power is growing again. He wants you. He will destroy your mind and soul then inhabit your body because it is so strong with the Force."
"Why hasn't he taken someone else by now?"
"No body has been strong enough to handle his capabilities. Yours is the first he could inhabit without destroying. Do not let him."
"I have no desire to do that. How can I defeat him? He is not 'real'."
"Use that mind of yours. You will find the way. I will be here to help as much as I can. My essence grows weaker everyday while Tarren's grows stronger. Defeat him and my soul will be freed." The form of Shaana turned and looked behind her. "I must go before he finds me."
The light disappeared and Kelly found herself in darkness once again.
At the Wraith safe house, members of both Wraith and Rogue squadrons mingled. Horn, Sei'lar, Donos, Forge, Janson and Klivian from the Rogues spoke with Shalla Nelprin, Kel Tainer, Tyria Sarkin, Elassar, and "Piggy" Sa'Bring of the Wraiths. The commanders of both squads, Wedge Antilles and Garik "Face" Loran, stood huddled in a dark corner. They discussed which options they had. "Do you have anyone in the Dark One's organization," asked Wedge.
Face frowned, "Unfortunately, yes. Dia situated herself in as a slave."
Wedge noted the pain in his face and laid a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry Loran. She chose to do this herself, correct?"
Face nodded, "She thought she would be the best to infiltrate them."
"Well, she's a tough woman. She should be able to handle it."
"But why a slave? She's been one before. She doesn't deserve that."
"I know. It was her choice. Can you get in touch with her?"
"Yes."
"Good. Get word to her that they have Kelly. Have her find out what kind of security they have around her and if she's ok."
"Easy enough. I can have that in a few hours." Face turned and motioned Elassar over. "I need you to get a message to Lieutenant Passik."
"Easily done, oh captain, my captain," smiled the Devorian. "What do I need to tell her?"
"Let her know Lieutenant Antilles is a captive of the Dark Ones. We need her to find out if the Lieutenant is alive and well and what kind of security there is."
"As you wish." Elassar turned and disappeared out the door.
Face turned back to Wedge, "All we can do now is wait."
Kelly fought the sleep that threatened to overtake her. The hunger in her belly didn't help much either. At least the growling of her stomach kept her awake.
A noise off to her left brought her to full attention. The small cloaked figure from before approached and began doing something on the table she couldn't see. Suddenly the bed began to move her into a more upright position. From here she could see more of the room.
It wasn't much better than the ceiling, but now she could see the short one beside her. The creature was furry. It noticed her watching and looked her in the eyes. "I am Noghri," it said in a soft growling voice. "I bring food server." He turned and motioned someone forward.
A female Twi'lek moved towards her with a covered tray. It took almost until she was beside the bed for Kelly to recognize the tattoos. Dia! Her eyes widened in recognition.
Dia bowed as she laid the tray on a table beside the bed. Removing the cover released the wondrous smell of the nerf steak and vegetables.
Kelly inhaled deeply and her stomach growled in response. She wanted so badly to stuff the steak in her mouth, but her arms were still firmly in place at her sides. "I could eat more easily if my arms were released."
"Do not worry," Dia said in a soft voice Kelly had never heard before. "I will feed you."
"Thank you."
It was perfect. The meat was so tender and the vegetables still crisp. Kelly savored every bite. She looked into Dia's eyes and attempted to speak to her telepathically. Dia, if you can understand me, blink your eyes once.
The Twi'lek brought a glass of water to Kelly's lips and looked at her. She closed her eyes slowly then opened them.
Good. I am going to ask you a few questions. I hope for them to be yes or no answers only. Blink once for yes and twice for no, ok?
Dia blinked once.
Have you spoken with the others?
One blink.
Are they all ok?
One blink.
Good. I hope this thing doesn't think about using Wedge against me. Are they trying to find a way to get me out of here?
One blink.
That is not going to be easy. Let them know I'm ok and that I'm working on a way to defeat this from the inside.
Dia cocked her head, her lekku twitching.
I'm going to free this world of the dark Jedi. Even if it means my life.
Dia blinked twice quickly and looked at her with a hard stare.
Kelly understood, but knew what she had to do. I'm not going to slip. The dark path is not for me. I will be careful. She stifled a yawn. Uh-oh. Do you know if the food was drugged?
The Twi'lek sadly blinked twice.
I think it is. A yawn escaped her lips this time and her eyes drooped. I haven't much more time, Dia. Tell them to hurry. She barely saw Dia blink once through her hazy eyes before she was asleep.
Just about everyone was asleep except Wedge, Face, Corran, Wes and Shalla. The five sat huddled over a table. They occasionally would hear one of their colleagues cry out in his or her sleep. A chill went through them each time.
"The bet is forty to you, Commander," Shalla said after hearing a mournful moan from Myn Donos.
Wedge couldn't pull his eyes away from his Lieutenant's sleeping form. He wondered if Myn was reliving the destruction of Talon Squadron again. Poor guy, he finally gets to where he doesn't take the blame and it gets brought up again.
"Commander," Shalla said again. She laid a hand on his arm in an attempt to gain his attention.
Wedge pulled his eyes away and looked at his cards. They seemed to blend together. Is that a jack of staves or the Idiot? He looked up at the others, "Isn't Elassar back yet?"
"He's probably waiting on Dia to be available," answered Face. He had to admit he was getting just as nervous.
A loud snore drew everyone's attention to Wes. Chin resting in the palm of his hand, the former Wraith XO had finally given in to his exhaustion.
Earlier in the evening, Wes had acquired a speeder bike and went back to the Centurion Eagle to see if anything had been sent there. Han had neither seen nor heard anything unusual, but said he and Chewbacca would keep a watch out. He wished them luck in finding Kelly.
Shalla nudged Wes' arm and it fell out from under his head. He barely woke up in time to catch himself from landing face first in his chips. "Huh, what? I bet a hundred," he said sleepily.
Luckily for everyone, Elassar walked in the door.
"What did you find out," Wedge and Face said simultaneously as they stood.
"Did you speak to Dia," asked Face as the Devorian approached the table.
"Yes, and she sends you her best. I waited while she did a recon. She was chosen to feed the new captive."
"Must be Kelly," added Corran.
"You are correct Lieutenant Horn. Dia said that Kelly spoke to her telepathically."
"What'd she say," asked an impatient Wedge.
"She said she was ok, though Dia said she ate all the food and seemed to want more."
"At least they aren't starving her," said Shalla.
"They do seem to be drugging her. She fell asleep shortly after eating. Dia said Kelly was beginning to speak drastically. She said she was going to take out the dark Jedi even if it meant her life." The Devorian looked at Wedge, judging his reaction.
The Commander sat hard in his chair. The others watched him, hoping for divine wisdom from their chief. "What is the security like," he asked quietly.
"Lieutenant Passik gave me this." Elassar handed a data disk to Shalla who proceeded to pop it in her data pad.
She looked it over then handed it to Wedge. "It's pretty tight. Lots of overlaps, but there are a few blind spots. I think we can get in."
Wedge looked it over, but found his eyes drawn to a spot that was marked with a red X. The label designated that room as the Interrogation Chamber. He shivered at the thought of what they may do to his sister.
He handed the pad to Corran, "Here, you and Shalla find the fastest and easiest way to get in. We need to do this as quickly as possible." He looked at the rest of his crew. "Everyone else needs to try and get some sleep."
"No!" She gave a battle cry as her lightsaber cut through droids. They had already taken ten of hers down. They were not going to have the last.
She swathed a path through towards their Master. Another young boy stood before her. He held the bodiless head of her youngest and most promising Padowan. BASTARDS, all of you, she thought as she prepared to fight the fifth of his students.
He tossed aside the head, "In Tarren's name, I will destroy you, Jedi!" He came down with a powerful blow from his upper right to lower left.
She easily sidestepped then blocked the return uppercut. So predictable, she thought. Each one had started with the same move.
Many times she parried. Then the boy went left instead of right like all the others had and ran right through her violet blade. He screamed once, then dropped, silenced forever.
She sighed sadly. Another wasted life. She turned and looked at the top of the hill. A cloaked form stood laughing, beckoning her forward. "COWARD," she screamed. "You send your fledglings to deal with me because you cannot face me yourself!"
"My fledglings defeated all of your apprentices, my dear."
"Only because my students did not submit to the dark side. Come, face me if you are truly a Jedi."
Terran merely chuckled and waved an arm. She was suddenly surrounded by killer droids. She put her lightsaber in a defensive position as they moved towards her. They were only a meter away from her when she cried, "May the Force swallow you whole!" With the remaining energy in her body, she hurled her weapon at Terran.
She heard him scream as the weapon connected, and then she was enveloped by the droids.
Kelly woke up sweating. The dream felt so real. It must have been the last time her great-grandmother had met Lord Terran. When they both died.
She got her breathing under control and then felt as if she was being watched. She opened her eyes to see the cloaked young man above her. She could feel his rapid pulse through the Force. "What is your name," she asked.
His face went from exhuberation to confusion, "Why do you ask?"
"I just want to know so that when I die, I'll know who to curse."
Anger crossed his face, "It's none of your business, but I am called Marcus."
"See, that didn't hurt." Kelly tried to move around a little to loosen her joints. Unfortunately, the straps were much too tight. "What I wouldn't give to be able to stretch just a little."
Marcus ignored her and moved a medical scanner over her body.
"Am I dead yet?"
He gave her a stern look and continued.
"You can use the Force, you know."
Still, he ignored her.
"You have great potential. If you were to release me, we could escape. I could teach you how to use the Force. Better yet, I could get a Jedi Master to teach you."
Panic rose in her voice as he continued to ignore her. "Please don't do this. You are a good soul, Marcus. You don't deserve this..." She screamed in pain as he tightened the strap around her right wrist.
"Marcus please. I... I can't feel my hand." Kelly tried to wiggle her fingers, but found them numbing.
Marcus looked down and saw her hand turning blue. Quickly he released the strap. Kelly clinched her hand in a fist and released it. She did this several times to get the blood flowing. As she did this, she also turned her arm sideways and lifted it up slightly from the bed. "Thank you."
Marcus snorted derisively and retightened the strap. "Stop spouting nonsense about the Force," he told her. "It cannot be. I only serve the Master."
"You should serve yourself. I pity you because you are blinded to the truth."
"I cannot wait until the master removes you so I don't have to listen to your incessant prattle."
"You don't mean that," she said, scorned.
Marcus looked down and saw the sadness in her eyes. His face softened, but only for a moment.
"Why don't you take him, coward," she whispered. "He will follow you anywhere."
His eyes blazed with fire as he turned and left the room.
Kelly grinned knowingly. She had gotten the best of Marcus and Terran. She moved her wrist from side to side letting the strap flop on top.
Kelly waited an hour before thinking about scanning the room for life forms. She was pretty sure she was alone, so she slid her hand from the bond. First she undid the strap over her head. Moving her head from side to side resulted in many loud pops as her bones moved against each other for the first time in she didn't know how long.
Breathing deeply and summoning the Force, she reached to undo her left hand. Every movement was painful. She rolled her upper body to the left in an attempt to get to the strap.
There! Finally her arms were free. She gingerly pushed herself into a sitting position. She swore that her bones were about to break, but she continued. Undoing the leg straps, she pushed her legs off the side of the bed. She swung her legs out and back and wiggled her toes. When she was sure they would hold her, she attempted to stand. Immediately her knees gave out and she had to catch herself on the bed. Slowly she rose and tried again.
This time her knees held. She took a few tentative steps then found herself being supported by something short. She looked down and saw the Noghri helping her along. "Why," she asked him.
"It is not right what they are doing to you," he replied. "Come. I will take you from here."
Once they reached the door, she waved him off. "I think I can stand on my own now."
He bowed to her and moved to the door. He listened for movement outside, then cracked open the door and disappeared outside. Before she could blink, a small hand waved her into the hallway.
They moved through many twisting and turning hallways. Kelly was thoroughly lost. "Are you sure we're going the right way," she asked once.
"Trust me," was his only reply.
They passed a dark hallway and suddenly Kelly was grabbed from behind and pulled into the darkness. Her muffled scream alerted the Noghri, who turned and growled.
Her eyes widened as she saw her new captors. "Don't hurt them, they are my crew," she telepathically told the Noghri. He sheathed the sharp knife that was in his hand. She pulled away from Piggy, who was holding her, and fiercely hugged Wedge. "You came!"
"Of course we did. You didn't really think we'd leave you here to rot?"
She just smiled. "Where are the rest?"
"We split up. Shalla and Wes went up. We took this floor. Tyria and Corran went down."
The Noghri tapped Kelly on the elbow, "Your friends are in danger. We must go."
Kelly nodded. "You lead." She looked up at Wedge. "He's ok. He has saved me several times."
A soft beep behind Sa'Bring made Kelly smile. "Oh Winger! I am so glad to see you." She dropped to hug the R2 unit. He rocked back and forth in happiness. Before she could ask, he flipped open the special compartment for her lightsaber. "Thanks friend," she said as she removed it. "Let's go."
Together they moved to a set of stairs. "Up or down," she asked the Noghri.
He pointed up and moved to ascend the stairs. Winger rolled to the droid access and zipped up to the next level. Piggy followed the Noghri.
Wedge laid a hand on Kelly's shoulder before she could step up. "Are you ok," he asked.
She looked at him for a moment then nodded. "I can't leave here until I get rid of Lord Terran."
Her brother's eyes widened at that name. "Lord Terran? Isn't he the one who killed great-grandmother Shaana?"
Kelly smiled. "You remembered. That other planet you and Luke went to... What Luke felt was Shaana's essence. I've spoken with her."
"Really," he asked in shock.
Before she could answer, a sharp whistle from the stairs told them it was time to go.
"Winger has found the Lieutenants," said Piggy as they reached the landing. "However, it seems there are several other life forms moving towards them."
"Is there any way we could come up behind the surprise party," Kelly asked her droid.
The R2 rolled over to a computer terminal and broke through the security. He brought up a map of the floor they were on and marked a route that would bring them in behind the ambushers.
The Noghri and the droid lead them down a few halls then stop at a corner. The Noghri waved them back. Kelly moved up and peered around the corner. Ahead of them were six mercenaries. She recognized Taylin among them. Looking down to tell the Noghri, she found him gone. She didn't see him anywhere as she looked about. "Where'd he go," she whispered to her companions.
Both shrugged.
A gasp from down the hall made her turn back. Two of the mercs stood over the prone body of another. Their agitated motions brought to mind that the one on the floor was dead.
Kelly suddenly got a flash of the future and reached back towards Wedge. She used the Force to bring his blaster to her hand. Immediately, she snapped off a few shots to distract the mercenaries.
It worked. She didn't sense that Shalla or Wes was hurt. Suddenly there was lots of crossfire. Wedge reached for the blaster that wasn't there. Kelly slipped back around the corner and handed it to him. "Here," she said. "I needed to borrow it to save Wes' ass."
Wedge just looked at her confused, took the blaster and shook his head.
Piggy and Wedge started shooting at the mercenaries. Kelly removed the cylindrical object from her belt and with a snap-hiss the purple blade emerged. She concentrated and whispered a prayer to her great-grandmother, then charged out into the hall.
Gracefully, she blocked incoming bolts while the ones that hit her bounced off her Force shield. One merc firing towards her dropped from a bolt shot by Piggy. As she reached the other two, another dropped from Wedge's shot as she cut the other's blaster in half.
All firing suddenly ceased. Kelly and Taylin stood eye to eye, neither daring to flinch.
"Witch," screamed Taylin. "How did you escape?"
"I had a little help," Kelly said and raised an eyebrow. "You're outnumbered Taylin. You might as well surrender."
"Not without drawing your blood," she growled as she leapt towards Kelly.
Kelly didn't flinch until she saw the knife protruding from her assailant's gut followed shortly by a blaster shot between the eyes. She stepped back as the shocked Taylin dropped to the floor dead. Behind the cyborg stood the Noghri with a bloody knife and Wes with his blaster still in position.
Slowly Kelly took a breath and turned off her lightsaber. She looked down at the cyborg's body. "I didn't like her anyway," said the Noghri.
She smiled and looked at him. "Thank you," she said as she bowed. "Now I owe you two."
"Only one," he responded. "You are taking me from this place. That makes up for one."
"Fair enough. What is your name?"
"I am called Niktalath."
Wes, Shalla, Wedge and Piggy walked up to the two and Wes grabbed Kelly in a fierce hug. "You're ok."
"Of course I am," she replied with a smile. "We need to hurry and find Corran and Tyria now. They're in danger."
Niktalath nodded and led the group to another set of stairs. They descended two floors into the bowels of the fortress.
Winger immediately scanned for life forms as soon as he landed on the floor, but the sound of blaster fire told the others where they were. Quickly they ran towards the sound.
Rounding a corner, they saw Corran and Tyria pinned in by a group of about fifteen to twenty mercenaries and stormtroopers. Everyone ran forward and began shooting while diving behind crates. "Need some help," Wes asked Corran with a grin.
"It's about time you got here. Good to see you found her." Corran turned and nodded at Kelly, "Glad you're alive."
"Me too," she responded as she snapped off a few shots.
The firefight was brutal. Every time Kelly thought they were getting the advantage, more troops would show up.
A nagging feeling of being watched pulled at her. She looked back over her shoulder and saw him. The dark cloak's hood was pulled over his face, but she knew exactly who it was. In his hand he carried a lightsaber with a violet blade.
Now she was getting angry. Tarren had taken over Marcus' body and now he was using her great-grandmother's lightsaber!
Quietly, Kelly stood and moved towards him. As she neared him, a stray bolt singed her hair. She turned and motioned towards the hallway directly behind her. The air shimmered for a moment as her Force shield became active. "I see you finally did it," she said to him as she got closer. She stopped about fifteen meters from him.
"Since you wouldn't cooperate, I had no other choice," Tarren spat in Marcus' voice.
"Come on, Marcus. Fight back. This isn't what you want."
"You fool! Marcus is gone. I have full control."
"Not for long," Kelly said as she ignited her purple blade and moved into a defensive position.
Corran felt a strong tremor in the Force and turned around. He saw Kelly facing off with a cloaked man. He seethed with the dark side. Corran nudged Wedge and nodded towards the rear.
Wedge turned and saw the two figures. He panicked, "Kelly, no!"
She turned and looked him in the eye. Inside his mind her heard her. "I must do this, my dearest brother. Just keep those Imps off my tail." She turned back to face her adversary.
He was torn from what his heart said and what his gut told him. Seeing a bolt slam into Shalla's shoulder made the decision much easier. He turned back and started firing.
"I really don't want to do this," Kelly said as she mirrored Marcus' move.
"Too bad," Tarren/Marcus said. In one swift movement, he attacked. A slash down from upper right to lower left, then back up to the left.
She instinctually sidestepped then blocked the uppercut. This feels all too familiar. After several more blocks, she figured it out. "You don't have full control! You didn't have full control of your students either."
Tarren/Marcus growled and came at her harder.
Kelly grinned, dodging and parrying every attack. She finally got fed up. "Forgive me Marcus. You would have made a great Jedi." With that, she pressed an attack at him, swift and deadly.
That caught him off guard. He stumbled and blocked a few swipes. Suddenly he felt he had no control over himself. "Now Kelly," Marcus' voice said urgently.
Kelly instinctually punched her saber forward. It connected and went straight through Tarren/Marcus' gut. He let out a monstrous cry, which dwindled down into Marcus' painful moan.
Kelly looked down at her hands in shock. She shut off the lightsaber and watched Marcus' body drop to the floor. Falling to her knees beside him, she pulled his head into her lap. "No!"
He looked up into her eyes as she cradled his head. "He's gone," he said in a tired and pained voice.
"What have I done," she cried.
"What you had to."
His body twitched as death settled in. She didn't know what to do. She just held him and cried.
"I... I would have liked to have been your student," he croaked. "Do me a favor, Kelly Antilles."
She looked at him and sniffed. He had called her by her own name. "Anything. Name it."
"Don't leave me here." The last breath in his body escaped. He was dead. Kelly hung her head in shame and mourning.
A hand softly lying on her shoulder made Kelly look up. Through teary eyes she saw her brother and Corran standing over her. "I killed him," she admitted softly.
"You did what you had to do," Corran explained. "It never gets any easier."
"Come on," Wedge said gently. "We need to get out of here before the fireworks start."
She looked at him confused, "What about the Imps?"
"After the scream, the mercs came to their senses and realized they were fighting with the Imperials. They turned on them real quick."
She nodded and reached for the lightsaber in Marcus' dead hand. Winger beeped quietly to let her know he was beside her.
"Is that wise," asked Wedge.
"This was great-grandmother Shaana's blade. It belongs in our family." She tapped Winger on the top of his domed head. He opened the secret compartment. "Be careful with this," she told the little droid as she slipped the saber in. She gathered Marcus' body in her arms and stood.
"What are you doing," asked a shocked Corran.
"I made a promise not to leave him here. I plan on keeping it. He truly was a good soul." With that said, she turned and walked out.
A familiar ship awaited them as they exited the building. Mirax stood at the bottom of the Skate's boarding ramp. "Hurry up. The cavalry will be here soon."
As if on cue, the roar of X-wing engines passed overhead. Kelly looked up and saw four Rogues fly by on their way to take out the Imperial base. She smiled as she sensed Pash among them.
Wedge helped Kelly on board. Mirax looked at them curiously. "Who's he?"
"He could have been a Jedi Knight," Kelly told her. "Unfortunately, he gave in to the dark side, or the dark side took him." She bowed her head in contemplation. "I promised to take him away from here."
A soft brush at her side made her look down. Niktalath stood beside her in a defensive position. "Oh, and he's with us too."
Mirax almost jumped when she saw the Noghri standing beside Kelly. She knew he wasn't there a second ago. "Ok," was all she said.
Once everyone was on board, Mirax took off and headed for the Errant Venture. Kelly laid Marcus on a bed and covered him with a sheet. Sitting in a chair, she began to meditate.
"You did well today."
"Thank you great-grandmother. I wish I wouldn't have had to kill Marcus."
"It was the only way."
"But it wasn't fair. It wasn't his choice."
"That is the fate of the Dark side, my child." Shaana paused for a moment. "I have a request of you."
"Anything."
"I wish for you and your brother to come to Dregos IX. I need to speak with both of you before I pass on."
"Of course, great-grandmother."
There was a soft knock on the door. Kelly looked up to see Wedge leaning in the doorway. "We're almost at the Venture," he said.
She looked at him rather thoughtfully for a moment then motioned to the seat opposite her. "I need to speak to you for a moment."
Confused, he sat and leaned forward resting his elbows on his knees. "What do you need?"
Kelly took a deep breath and released it slowly. "I'm not sure how to phrase this to where you won't think I'm totally crazy."
"Go ahead. I already know you're crazy." He grinned at his jest.
She grinned too, glad he seemed relaxed with this. "Ok, it's like this. Great-grandmother Shaana wants you and me to come to Dregos IX so that she can speak to us."
Wedge stared at her blankly. She was worried that she made him even more confused that he already was. "I don't understand fully myself," she added hesitantly. "I just know that she wishes it."
He looked at her a moment more then sat up and pulled his comlink from his pocket. "Venture, this is Commander Antilles. I need to have mine and Lieutenant Antilles' X-Wings ready to leave as soon as we get there." He listened for a moment then spoke again. "Yes, the Lieutenant's droid is with us. Just get her ship ready for the droid to be lifted in." He shut the comm off and looked back at her. "I believe you." He shook his head slowly, "and for some odd reason, I believe in the Force."
Kelly smiled at her brother and reached for his hand. He leaned over and hugged her tightly.
Once aboard the Venture, brother and sister ran to change into flightsuits. They left Winger in the capable hands of the Wraiths to get him into the fighter.
Moments later, Kelly and Wedge ran back across the bay in their familiar orange suits. Wedge climbed into his ship while Kelly vaulted into hers. They started the engines and lifted off in minutes.
On their way out, they pass the Rogues coming back from destroying the Imperial base.
"Where are you off to," asked Tycho over the comm.
"We have a meeting at Dregos IX," responded Kelly. "We'll be back soon."
Luke's calm voice crackled over Kelly's private comm, "I sense excitement and urgency from you."
"Luke, what you sensed on Dregos IX was my great-grandmother's essence. She was unable to speak with you because she was weak. However, when she sensed me, knowing I was a blood relative, she found herself strengthened."
"Go then, and may the Force be with you."
They landed their craft near the settlement Luke and Wedge had seen before. Kelly retrieved Shaana's lightsaber from Winger before jumping to the ground.
Together they moved into the settlement. A strange glow emanated from the center of town. Kelly and Wedge followed a path to that spot. Before them stood a beautiful woman with long, flowing dark hair. She was not alive, but had a wispy glow about her.
Wedge stopped and stood with his mouth open in shock. He could not believe his eyes. There were no holos of Shaana, to his knowledge, but she looked exactly like his mother. He looked at Kelly and saw the stunning resemblance again. Then he noticed they were watching him. Quickly, he closed his mouth and tried to quit staring.
Kelly grinned and stepped forward to take his hand. "Wedge, I would like you to meet Shaana Crainden, your great-grandmother."
He bowed, not really knowing what to do. "I am honored to meet you."
It was Shaana's turn to grin. "Well, at least he has manners."
Kelly giggled despite her nervousness. "Oh, I have your lightsaber," she said to Shaana. "Somehow it remained intact. Marcus used it against me." Kelly frowned. "Such a waste. I wish I could have saved him."
"You had no other choice," Shaana said.
"That's what everyone keeps telling me. Even Marcus did before he died!" A tear slid down her cheek. "He didn't deserve that end to his short life."
Wedge wrapped an arm around her shoulder. "Listen to Shaana. It was what had to be done."
Shaana watched brother and sister bond. She smiled inwardly then broke the silence. "I asked you here for another reason." The ghostly figure sat upon a log nearby. "I want to tell you both why it is that Kelly is the only one who can use the Force."
Wedge and Kelly sat cross-legged on the ground before Shaana. Both were eager to hear what she was about to say.
Shaana looked both in the eyes then began. "For some reason that even the eldest Jedi could not answer, only the women in our family have been Jedi. Every one has had a female child. And only the female children of the female child have been Force sensitive.
"The male children have always been great pilots." She smiled at Wedge. "The children of the male child, male or female, were also very good pilots. Also, all of the Force-sensitive children have married pilots. We have never crossed generations, meaning that none of your Jedi descendants have married on of your pilot descendants. That is how our line has remained pure.
"I see so much of your namesake in you, Wedge," she finished with a smile.
Wedge nodded. "Your husband. I remember that he is who I'm named for."
Shaana smiled remembering times past. "Yes. He was a great pilot. Many times he shuttled Jedi around this galaxy. That is how we met. You both do your ancestors great credit."
Kelly searched inside herself. She knew, somehow she knew, everything she had just been told was true. It didn't seem fair, though, that her brother couldn't share in her contact with the Force. Maybe she would be able to find out why it was that only the females in her family could touch the Force. She nodded and looked back up to Shaana. "Am I the one to find out why we are the only ones with the Force?"
Shaana looked thoughtfully at Kelly, "That may be your destiny."
Kelly smiled and looked at Wedge. "I only wish that Wedge could feel it too."
Shaana smiled, "Thank you for coming, my children. I am happy to see our family lives on. Wedge, the Force is with you, but not in the same way as it is with your sister.
"Kelly, you are very strong with the Force." She paused and turned her head as if listening to someone. "In a way, you did save Marcus. He allowed you to be able to kill Tarren."
She watched Kelly frown and her eyes turn sad. Shaana paused, frowning slightly herself. "There is a way to bring him back," she said.
Kelly looked up confused. "How?"
"The Jedi council has given me permission to show you the Life Transference ability. A Jedi can only perform this once in her lifetime. But..." Shaana paused, not sure if she should go on.
"But what," Kelly asked.
Shaana sighed deeply. "Because of your bravery and that you stayed away from the dark side when you could have easily slipped because of your anger. And Marcus' bravery in fighting Tarren to return to the light, upon completion of the ceremony, we will bestow upon you the rank of Jedi Knight and Marcus will become your Padowan, your apprentice."
Kelly stared at her great-grandmother in awe. "My apprentice?"
Shaana grinned at the look on Kelly's face. She remembered the first time she received an apprentice. Her reaction was much the same. "Yes. As long as you keep him from falling to the dark side, you will be granted the ability to use the Life Transference once more during your lifetime. Think hard now. Is this what you wish?"
Kelly looked at Wedge. "It's your decision," he said.
She looked inward to herself. There were many things she hadn't learned. She wasn't completely trained yet. The lightsaber she used wasn't even one she had built herself. Once she had been told that making a saber was the culmination of your training. That only then were you truly a Jedi. How could someone who hadn't even completed her training train someone else? "Do I have to be the one who trains him," she asked quietly.
"Yes dear," responded Shaana. "He will be your responsibility."
Her shoulders sagged with the weight of the decision. How could she be responsible for someone's training when she didn't know much herself? What if she couldn't keep him from the easy and dark path? What if he just didn't want to come back? What if she said "no" and he did? She put her head in her hands and growled in frustration. "I don't know what to do!"
Wedge sat beside her, "I know it's hard Kel. I go through this every day."
"I know," she said looking up at him. "But you can give your pilots a choice. I can't ask Marcus if this is what he wants."
"But you can," Shaana stated.
"How?"
"Like myself, his spirit has not yet left this plane. His destiny is unfulfilled."
"That makes it sound like I should agree to this."
"No," Shaana quickly scolded. "Your destiny may lay along a different path than his."
"Then may I ask him?"
"Yes." Shaana's image shuddered slightly then became brighter as Marcus appeared beside her.
He smiled warmly, "Hello Kelly."
Tears welled in her eyes as she looked at him. Simple commoner's clothes had replaced the dark robes she had last seen him in. She choked back her emotions and tried to speak. "I'm really very sorry," she finally said.
Marcus smiled sadly. "You did what had to be done. I've already told you that. I wanted to thank you for giving me the strength to release my soul from Tarren's clutches."
A corner of Kelly's mouth twitched up into a half smile. "I did nothing. It was your strength in the light side that pushed him away."
They both looked at each other for a moment, neither knowing what to say next. Marcus broke the silence, "Your great-grandmother said you needed to ask me something."
"Um, yes. Wow, how to ask this... uh... Well, I have been granted the ability to bring you back to life in order to learn the ways of the Jedi. However, if you were to succumb to the dark side, I would lose more than you. I don't know what to do. I am torn between giving you the chance you deserve and wondering if I am skilled enough to do it."
Marcus nodded, absorbing the details. "You have quite a dilemma."
"Gee thanks. That helps a lot," she said sarcastically.
Wedge nudged her hard and she glared at him. She frowned. "I'm sorry. I just don't feel qualified enough to train Marcus in the ways of the Force."
"I don't think you would have been given this chance if the Council thought you were unqualified," Wedge stated in his grand wisdom.
Kelly looked at Marcus. "What do you want? Do you feel confident enough to take this on?"
His brow furrowed as he considered her questions. "You want me to make the decision?"
"No. I just want to know if this is something you want."
They just stood and looked at each other. Wedge could tell they both were thinking hard. He looked at Shaana and saw she was watching with concern. He moved closer to speak with her. "Grandmother, I'm worried. What if Kelly is right?"
"It is her decision, Wedge. We cannot make it for her. It is Marcus that I am most worried about. I am not sure he is ready for the responsibility."
Wedge looked back to Kelly and Marcus to find them locked in a discussion. "Why Marcus," he asked.
"I was able to spend some time with him after the Council made their decision and brought him to me. He is still so young." She looked at her great-granddaughter and the young man and her head filled with many memories.
"Back before the clone wars, if a baby was discovered who could use the Force, we took him or her in to begin training. That changed when Qui-Gon brought Anakin Skywalker to us. The boy was already nine. That changed everything."
Shaana looked off into the distance and sighed. "I felt it was for the better. The children were no longer being molded strictly to our ideals. They became individuals. They had experienced life. Marcus has only known the horrors of Dregos VI. If only he were able to see the good in the universe."
"Why can't he," Wedge asked.
That caught Shaana offguard. "What?" She looked directly at her great-grandson.
"Why couldn't he be brought back and let him decide for himself if he wants to become a Jedi?"
"The Council will never allow that. Their wish is for the Jedi Knights to be reborn. No matter how sane your idea is, they would only reject it."
A noise behind them alerted them to Kelly's presence. Shaana and Wedge turned to face her. Marcus stood just behind and to the left of her. "We've made a decision."
"And?"
"I want to restore Marcus' life, but under one condition."
Wedge grinned as Shaana cut him a hard look. "What is your condition?"
Kelly took a deep breath and held Shaana's gaze strongly. "He will have a chance to explore the galaxy and decide for himself if being a Jedi is what he wants to do. I had a choice when I found out I could use the Force. He should have that same choice."
Wedge chuckled and whispered to Shaana, "see, I told you."
Shaana sighed and looked at Kelly while trying to keep the corners of her mouth from curling up into a grin. She saw so much of herself in this child. She was strong willed and fiercely loyal. The new Jedi Knights will be stronger than ever. She shifted her gaze to Marcus and smiled inwardly. Already he was looking up to Kelly. "Is this your wish," she asked him.
"Yes ma'am," he replied quickly. "I've known very little of the world outside Dregos VI."
She allowed a small smile to cross her lips. "Come then, Marcus. We must present this to the Council." She looked at Wedge and Kelly. "You may want to set up camp here. I have the feeling this may take a while." The two ghostly figures faded away.
Kelly watched the light fade away and the darkness fill her sight. She hoped the Council would listen to Marcus. They felt it was in both of their interests to do it this way.
Wedge put an arm around her shoulders and led her towards their X-wings. "Come on. Let's get our stuff. Remember, a watched pot never boils."
"What?" His off-the-wall statement caught her off guard.
"They won't get back any faster with you standing there. Shaana was right. It will probably take a while."
"You knew, didn't you," she said quietly.
"I had an idea."
"You know me too well, my dear brother." Kelly smiled and pulled his arm from around her shoulder. "You get the gear and I'll get the droids."
"Wait, we better contact the Venture first. I'm sure they're wondering where we are."
"Good idea. Oh, have Mirax bring the Skate down with Marcus' body. If the Council says no, I want to bury him here. It's a polar opposite of Dregos VI."
"Alright. That's a sound choice." Wedge climbed into his X-wing and activated its comm unit. "Rogue Lead to Venture. Do you copy."
"Read you loud and clear, General. There has been at least one of your pilots stationed here since you left."
Wedge chuckled imagining the poor comms officer being bombarded by Rogues and Wraiths. "Well, who is on duty right now?"
"Um, Captains Tainer and Klivian, sir."
"Let me speak to Hobbie and you get Commander Celchu up there as soon as possible."
"Yes sir."
Hobbie's voice suddenly filled the comm. "Hey boss. What's going on?"
Kelly began lifting Winger from the socket of her X-wing. The droid beeped happily as she lowered him to the ground. "There. Does that make you happy?"
The droid beeped something at her, which made her shake her head. "You complained to me just the other day that you missed being in the X. Now you're saying you've had enough? You're weird."
WELL, YOU'RE CARRYING ON A CONVERSATION WITH A DROID. NOW WHO'S WEIRD, Winger retaliated.
Kelly stopped unloading her bag and turned towards the droid. "You're right," she said. "I'm the one who's crazy."
She and the droid happily gathered their things and began to make a camp. Winger made a campfire for the siblings as Kelly spread out the bedrolls and blankets.
She was just starting to heat up dinner when Wedge walked into camp. "Looks like you've done this before," he says.
"A few times," she replied. "Talon, Meowth, Aulduin, Cain and I had to spend some nights under the open sky." Kelly handed him the cooking pan as she stood. "Here. Finish this while I go get Gate down from your ship."
Wedge stared down at the pan in his hand. It had been so long since he had to fend for himself and cook his own food. A beep from Winger got his attention just moments before he dipped his entire hand in the fire. "Thanks Winger."
"What are you thanking him for," asked Kelly as she walked up with Gate rolling along behind her.
"Oh, I wasn't paying attention to dinner. It's a little crispy."
She smiled. "That's ok. I'm too nervous to eat anyway."
Wedge pushed the food around in the pan, "I don't think I'm too hungry now either."
Kelly shook her head and took the pan from him. "Don't worry. I think sleep will be the best alternative for us anyway. What did you tell Mirax?"
"I told her to come in a few hours."
"Good. That will give us some time to rest." Kelly laid down on her bedroll and adjusted it to where it was more comfortable. Her mind was filled with many things, mostly the time she spent with Aulduin. Had his training really been enough for her to be considered a Jedi Knight by the Council? There were so many questions that needed to be answered. "Wedge?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think I'm ready to be a Jedi Knight?"
Wedge thought for a moment before answering. "What I think doesn't matter. It's what you feel that matters."
"I don't feel like a Jedi Knight." Kelly sat up on her elbows, "Luke told me that making a lightsaber was the final step to becoming a Jedi. I've always had a saber. First Aulduin's, then mom's and now I could use Shaana's. None have been mine. I'm no Jedi!" Frustrated, she stood and began pacing.
"Kelly," Wedge said trying to calm her down. "Don't let it get to you. You've been through a lot more than many others have. I'm sure you've been through about as much as Luke has."
"I don't know. Killing your own father is a bit off the edge for me," she spat.
Wedge suddenly stood and blocked her path. Grabbing her by the arms, he held her still. "THAT was uncalled for."
Kelly looked at him in shock.
He looked down and saw how hard he was griping her arms and quickly released her. "I... I'm sorry."
"No, you're right," she said. "It was uncalled for. I'm sorry. I don't know what's gotten into me." She dropped her head in shame.
This time he gently laid his hands on her shoulders. "You're just tired. You've been though a lot in a short amount of time. Come on, let's get some rest." He eased her over to her bedroll and sat her down. "Everything is going to be ok."
She looked up at him, "I hope so."
Kelly awoke with a start. The nightmare she was having abruptly ended, thank goodness. She hoped to never have that one again. A high pitched whine in the air alerted her to the approaching ship. She looked up to see the Skate passing overhead.
She stood and nudged Wedge with her foot. "Get up. Mirax is here."
Wedge rolled over and stretched. He looked up and saw the familiar curves of the Skate. He checked his chrono. They had been asleep for about four hours. Oh well, they had worked on less before.
Kelly went to meet Mirax as she stepped off the gangplank. "Hi."
"Hi yourself," Mirax said. "You don't look so hot. Everything ok?"
"Yeah. I just didn't sleep well. I'll be fine. Let me go get the body off your ship."
"No rush." Mirax scrutinized her face. "Are you sure you're ok?"
Kelly stopped and looked back. "No, not really, but I'll get by." She walked on into the ship.
Mirax turned when she heard a deep sigh beside her. "What's going on?"
Wedge ran a hand through his brown hair, "I'm not really sure. One minute she's fine, the next... I've never seen her this way."
"You don't think she's..."
Wedge looked at her in shock. "No, she couldn't. Or could she?"
Mirax shook her head, "no, I really don't think so. It was just a theory." She stood looking towards her ship and where Kelly had gone. "Tell me what the deal is with this Marcus anyway."
"He was possessed by a dark Jedi. Kelly is trying to save him. She's been given the chance to bring him back alive."
"How?"
Wedge shrugged. "How should I know. It's one of those Force things."
Mirax nodded. "Ok, I get it. So, what now?"
"How about I get a shot at the fresher on the ship?"
Mirax grinned. "Feeling a bit dirty there, big boy?" She hugged her friend. "Sure, go on. I'll send Kelly in after you're finished."
Kelly quietly moved to the room where she had left Marcus' body. She paused at the door trying to summon the courage to go in. Why am I hesitating? It's just a body. You've seen dead bodies before. This one is different. This one may be brought back to life. Taking a deep breath, she stepped in.
The room was cold. Mirax thought to preserve the body. She moved to the bed and pulled the sheet back. His face was white, but had a look of triumph on it. She covered him back up and picked up his body.
She passed Wedge on her way out. "Where are you going?"
"I'm going to use the 'fresher. You'll get your turn," he said as he continued walking.
She shrugged. "Ok."
Once off the ship, she took the body to the edge of the campsite. Mirax had made some caf and was bringing her a cup. She took it readily. "Thanks. This is just what I need."
"Good," said Mirax. She sat down near the fire and watched the flames. "Kelly, if you need to talk, I'm here."
Kelly turned around after straightening out Marcus' body. She moved to sit next to Mirax. "I know you are. It's just..."
Mirax laid a hand on Kelly's. "It's ok. You're not in this alone, you know. Wedge and I both are here to help. We worry about you. I'm sure Pash is up there having a fit because he doesn't know what's going on down here."
Kelly smiled. "Yeah, he is," she said rather knowingly.
"See? There are so many people here that love you. We hate to see you so distressed."
"Maybe you'll listen to Mirax," said Wedge as he walked up. He had showered and shaved and was wearing a clean flightsuit.
Kelly looked at her brother. "I listen to you, too." She stood and brushed off her pants. "I think I'll go shower. I have a feeling we're going to be needed soon." She walked off into the Skate.
A short time later, Kelly walked back out to the campsite. She felt so much better now that she was clean and wearing fresh clothes. She reached the spot where Mirax and Wedge were seating talking and looked ahead. "They're coming," she told them.
Wedge and Mirax stood and followed Kelly to the center of the village. Shaana and Marcus stood waiting. "Well," asked Kelly impatiently.
Shaana shook her head slightly and grinned. "It took a lot of convincing, but we finally got Master Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi on our side. The others fell in behind them. Congratulations Kelly. You are officially a Jedi Knight."
Kelly's jaw dropped. She couldn't believe it! The Jedi Council had deemed her ready.
"They wanted me to tell you how proud they were of you for staying away from the dark side. Master Yoda saw how many times the dark side opened itself to you and you refused. He was quite impressed."
"I can't believe it."
"Yes you do. You believe in the good side of the Force. That is why you've made it. In fact, he wishes for you to help Luke restore the Knights and keep them as pure as possible."
"Of course. But, what about Marcus?"
"Yes, we need to get started. This will take some time to perform. Please bring his body to the temple." Shaana turned and moved towards a circular building.
Kelly walked back to Marcus' body and stooped to pick it up. "You wait here," she told Wedge and Mirax. "I don't know how long this is going to take."
Mirax and Wedge spent the next eight hours sleeping and playing cards to pass the time. They were very patient since neither had any idea how long they were going to have to wait. It was after the eighth hour when Wedge started to get worried.
"Gin," said Mirax as she laid down her hand. She had beaten Wedge six straight times. The last three, he had put down several cards he should have known she needed.
Wedge just threw his cards down on the table. "It's taking too long."
Mirax scooped up the cards and started shuffling them. "I agree it's been too long, but we have no idea what is involved. Just relax."
Not two seconds after she uttered those words, Mirax saw a light glow coming from the village. It grew brighter the closer it got to them. "See? Here they come now."
It was only Shaana who walked into the makeshift campsite. "Is there something wrong," asked Wedge in panic.
Shaana smiled, "No, both are fine. They are just exhausted." She waved an arm to the two, beckoning them to follow. "Come. They should be waking soon."
Together they walked to the circular building that had formerly served as a temple to some god. Once inside they saw a body lying on the dais. Another body lay on the steps below.
Wedge strode forward. He looked at the sleeping figure on the steps. Kelly clutched her stuffed Ewok toy. He smiled.
The figure on the dais stirred. Marcus slowly sat up and blinked his eyes. He studied the room and the people around him. "Am I alive," he asked.
The others smiled. "Looks that way, kid," answered Mirax. "Welcome back."
Marcus smiled warmly, "Thank you." He looked down at Kelly's prone form, "is she going to be ok?"
"She is just resting," replied Shaana. "It takes a lot from a Jedi when they perform this ritual. That is why we must only do it once in a lifetime."
Kelly stirred and opened her eyes. "How long have I been asleep?"
"Just a few hours."
"Is Marcus..."
"I'm here," he said as he extended a hand to help her up.
She looked up at his hand then to his face. "Wow, it really worked. No wonder I'm so tired," she said with a smile as she took his hand.
Gently, he pulled her to her feet, then hugged her. "Thank you, Kelly. I really do owe you my life."
Pulling away from him to look in his eyes, she spoke to him firmly. "Don't let the dark side ever take you over. That will be my repayment."
He looked deep into her eyes and saw the seriousness and determination within. He nodded. "You can count on that. I have no desire to go through that again."
Kelly smiled warmly then turned to face the other three. "Well, I guess we better get back to the ship before everyone goes crazy with worry." She looked at Shaana and bowed deeply. "I promise you and Master Yoda that I will help bring about the return of the Jedi Knights to this galaxy, and that they will be good and true."
"I know you will," Shaana said. "Take care my children."
"Will I ever see you again?"
"Perhaps. I only hope that it will be to praise your work."
Kelly beamed and looked at her brother. "I hope so, too."
They walked back into the campsite. Winger beeped happily and rolled over to Kelly. She bent down and hugged the little droid. "I'm tired, but fine. Ready to get back to civilization?"
The droid beeped something only she could understand. She smiled and used the Force to raise him into his socket on her X-Wing. Once he was in, she did the same with Gate, Wedge's droid.
"Guess you'll be riding with me," Mirax said to Marcus.
"Yes, of course. You'll pardon me if I seem a bit hesitant. I've never been in a ship like that before."
"You'll be fine," she replied, putting an arm around his shoulder. "Now come on, let's get you settled in. I think I have some spare clothes of Corran's that just might fit you. I don't think you should go onto my dad's ship wearing that cloak."
"Me either."
Wedge watched his sister getting the gear together and on board their ships. She seemed to stand taller. She also looked older and more mature. She was no longer his kid sister. Kelly was a woman who was about to have the weight of the entire galaxy thrust upon her shoulders soon.
Kelly caught him staring. "Something wrong," she asked him.
"No," he responded. "I was just thinking about how much you've grown up. I really can't think of you as my kid sister anymore. You're a Jedi Knight now, not a kid."
She walked up to her brother and playfully punched him. "Hey, I'll always be younger than you. I'm always going to be your kid sister."
He grinned wide and proceeded to tickle his "kid" sister.
"Errant Venture, this is Rogue Lead. Do you copy?"
"We copy Rogue Lead. It's about time you showed up," Booster said.
"It took a little longer than expected. We should be there in just a few."
"We have you on our scopes, Wedge. You and Kelly form up nice around the Pulsar Skate. Looks good."
"We're not Rogue pilots for nothing," retorted Kelly.
"I for one am glad you are Rogue pilots. We'll see you soon."
The two X-Wings and the Pulsar Skate landed in the bay of the Venture. A huge crowd of people eagerly awaited the ships' occupants. Kelly slid down the stairs that were rolled up to her ship. She looked up to see Pash running towards her. He grabbed her up in a gargantuan hug. "I missed you."
"I can't breathe," she said breathlessly.
He set her down and looked at her. "I really mean it. I missed you. I don't want to ever have to go through that again."
"I missed you, too. I have so much to tell you." She stood on her toes and gave him a kiss on the cheek. "But right now, I need to go to the Skate." She grabbed his hand and dragged him towards Mirax's ship.
Mirax came down the ramp first followed by a young man. The members of Wraith Squadron who were wandering towards the Skate stopped for a moment as if they recognized him. Timidly he came down the ramp.
Kelly ran up and hugged Mirax. She whispered into her ear, "Thanks for everything. I owe you a big one."
"You're gonna owe Booster a big one too," she replied with a smile.
Kelly let her go and moved to Marcus. "Hi."
"Hi. I feel a little uncomfortable."
"Don't worry about it. You aren't what you used to be. And I'll kill you again if you become that." She smiled.
He smiled back a little less nervous. "I promise that will never happen."
"It better not." She looked at the handsome man who finally had caught up with her. "Pash, this is..." she paused. It was better not to give his real name. But they hadn't talked about that before they left Dregos IX.
Marcus saved the day. "Just call me Marc," he said holding out his hand.
Pash took the proffered hand and shook it. "Welcome aboard, Marc. Looks like Kelly has a long story for me."
"I'm sure she does."
Kelly stood baffled. "Um, if you two don't mind, I need to take Marcus here to see Booster."
Pash grinned. "Sure, but promise to tell me the whole story, ok?"
"I will," she said as she kissed him. "Have I told you lately that I love you?"
He blushed slightly. "No. Have I told you that I love you?"
"No, but I'll let you do that later." She smiled and led Marc towards Booster's office.
Kelly waited patiently outside Wedge's office. It had been three days since they had rescued the Wraiths. Marcus, or rather Marc, was working for Booster so he could see the galaxy. On the side, he was learning to fly a freighter so that one day he could go out on his own. It had taken a little convincing to get Booster to agree, but he had finally given in. All the Wraiths had recovered fully and were back on active duty.
She wasn't really sure why she was here waiting for Wedge. He had even asked her to wear her dress uniform. She felt very uncomfortable in the white jacket with the high collar and even worse in the black skirt. The heels didn't help matters any either. She was constantly tugging at the jacket and pulling at the skirt. Even Wedge hated his uniform. Why was he making her have to wear the stupid thing?
The sound of the door opening made her stop fidgeting. She looked up and saw her brother, Tycho and Face walk out of the office. All three were dressed similar to her (minus the skirt, of course!). She breathed a bit easier seeing them in as much pain as she.
"Have you been waiting long," Wedge asked.
"No, not too long," she lied. "So, where are we going that everyone had to get all prettied up?"
"Just follow us," he replied as he walked out into the hall.
They went down several halls to the lift. From there, they went up several stories then walked over to the next building. Kelly wasn't very sure exactly where they were. She hadn't taken time to learn the area yet.
It wasn't long before they came to two large doors. There was a guard, also in dress uniform, posted outside. He nodded to Wedge and opened the door to let them pass.
Kelly sighed and walked through the door. Then she stopped. The view was breathtaking. Inside this building was something she never in her life thought she would see on Coruscant. It was a huge garden. Scattered among the plants and trees were tables where many dignitaries and fellow pilots sat chatting. She gazed awestruck at the beauty. She was barely aware that Wedge had moved beside her. "Beautiful, isn't it," he asked her.
All she could do was manage a nod. He grinned and took her arm. "Come on, kid. Our table is this way." He led her through the crowd, stopping to speak to those he recognized. Wedge led her to a long table where the members of Rogue and Wraith squadrons were seated.
Kelly noticed that their table was right beside the one that held the leaders of the New Republic. She saw Han and Leia seated with Luke beside them. Leia looked beautiful dressed in one of her many senatorial gowns. Even Han and Luke wore their military uniforms. Kelly was amazed that Leia had gotten BOTH to dress in the gods-awful things.
On their other side was Mon Mothma, Admiral Ackbar and General Cracken. Now she was starting to wonder what was going on. She jumped slightly as a familiar voice whispered in her ear. "Is this seat taken?"
Looking up with a smile on her face, Kelly saw Pash standing beside her. He, like everyone else, was in his dress uniform. "The maitre d' said this was my seat," he said with a smile.
"Well, if that's where he told you to sit, then sit." Once he was seated, she leaned over and kissed him on the cheek. "What's going on around here," she asked.
Pash shrugged. "I have no idea. All I was told was to show up in dress. You look fantastic, by the way."
Kelly blushed. "I hate this thing as much as you guys do. You look really great yourself."
They both were saved from further compliments by the arrival of the first course of the meal.
After dinner was finished and all the tables had been cleared, Leia Organa-Solo stood at a dais that had been brought out to the head table. "Good evening, everyone. I hope the meal was to everyone's liking. As you know, we are gathered here to honor someone who has shown great courage and skill. Someone we hope all our children will look to as a role model. She is very important to my brother and myself in that she joins my brother as being the second of their kind. Not only has she mastered those skills, she is also quite an accomplished pilot. Her abilities allow her to know when those she cares about are hurt. That is a big responsibility for someone who cares for all she meets. Like my brother, she learned that she possessed these skills when she was about twenty. It has been a long, hard road to control them and use them as she does. And now, due to the events of a few days ago, she has attained the highest status she can. And so, my brother Luke and I would like to present to you Kelly Antilles, Jedi Knight."
Everything seemed to suddenly fall all around Kelly. Admittedly, she wasn't paying attention to what Leia had been saying, but she knew her own name when she heard it. All around her people were standing and applauding. Pash tugged her to her feet and pushed her towards the dais. In a haze, she walked towards Leia.
Leia grinned broadly. She saw how surprised Kelly was and hugged her as she came up. "I see how shocked you are. Don't worry. You'll get used to it." Leia turned back to the crowd. "Admiral Ackbar has something he wishes to say now."
The Mon-Calamari stood and moved to take Leia's place beside Kelly. "I am not a one for words, so I will be brief. Lieutenant Kelly Antilles, in recognition of your bravery and skill in rescuing New Republic Military's Wraith Squadron, I am honored to bestow upon you the rank of Major." Ackbar's fin-like hands pinned the rank insignia upon Kelly's shoulder.
Kelly turned to see all the members of Wraith Squadron standing at attention saluting her. With a grin, she returned the salute and they spontaneously burst into applause.
After the applause died down, General Airen Cracken stepped up to the dais. He faced the crowd as he spoke. "Since the inception of the New Republic, Rogue Squadron has been our 'token' fighter squad. With the Rogues spending much more time fighting, they are unavailable to escort senators to diplomatic meetings on new worlds that wish to join the New Republic. Because of this, we have decided to create a new Squadron. This squad will consist of three X-Wings, three Y-Wings, two A-Wings, two B-Wings and two of our new E-Wings. They will be lead by Commander Ch'akta. Alpha Squadron will be emissaries. I know by now you are wondering why I am bringing this up. Of all the applicants and pilots we had chosen to consider, Kelly Antilles was on all our lists. We wish to promote Kelly not only to Major, but to Alpha Squadron as second in command."
Kelly was in shock yet again. Her? Second in command of an entire squad? She could hardly believe it. "I would be honored to serve as Commander Ch'akta's second in command of Alpha Squadron." She shook the General's hand and smiled broadly. She noticed that Cracken also was smiling. She couldn't believe that she had put a smile on the face of the man who always had seemed to hate her.
The audience was applauding yet again and Kelly plainly heard Wes chanting "Speech!" She glared at her friend and then began, "I guess I really should say a few words.
"Once in my life, I was afraid that I would go to bed and not wake up in the morning. I know it's common for children to feel that way, but I was nearly 17 when I was feeling that. Then one day I met this man who asked me if I could transport him and several of his colleagues from Dantooine to a planet called Yavin. Something in the back of my mind told me to take this job, even if the pay was lousy. Little did I know that 'hunch' would lead me here. Along the way, I found my brother and made many friends. I also learned things about myself that I never dreamed were possible. I wish Master Aulduin could have seen me finally obtain my goal. Thank you, Mon Mothma, for having the courage to stand against Senator Palpatine. And to Admiral Ackbar for standing up to Grand Moff Tarkin. And especially to Rogue Squadron for always being able to do what others say is impossible. It took just one shot to make my brother believe the impossible. That one shot also started the birth of the New Republic and the new order of the Jedi Knights.
"I am honored to be among these great people. I hope one day to be able to tell my children that their uncle and his friends were responsible for the peace in which they are able to live." Kelly smiled and bowed slightly.
A light ripple became thunderous applause as everyone stood and showed their agreement to what had just been said. Leia came up and hugged Kelly tightly. "I never could have said that any better. You will help lead the Jedi to be strong and honorable."
"Thanks, Leia. I hope I'll be able to do that." Kelly turned to see Luke and Wedge standing nearby. She went to her brother and hugged him. "How dare you keep something like this from me," she scolded lightly.
"You wouldn't have been surprised if I had told you."
"True." She looked at Luke. "Thank you."
"Why are you thanking me?"
"Had you not given me the courage to take all this head on, I don't think I would have been able to get as far as I have."
He smiled warmly. "Yes you would have. You have had the strength from the day I met you. You are a very strong woman and should be proud of that."
"I know I am proud to be associated with her," said Pash as he walked up. "But, if you will excuse us, I need to talk to Kelly." He took her hand and led her further into the garden.
They discovered a little pond with beautiful multicolored fish swimming around. Pash had Kelly sit on a bench next to the water. "Kelly, we've known each other for quite a while now. And I..."
"Is this the thing you were talking to the guys about back before we left to go find the Wraiths?"
Pash stopped pacing, "Huh?" He turned at looked at her. "You mean when you came in on me talking to Wedge, Wes and Tycho?"
"Exactly. Wedge made excuses for you then. So, you're ready to tell me what you were talking about?"
Pash blushed and stammered. "Well, uh... Yeah."
Kelly just smiled. "Well, go on."
"You know, don't you?"
"I have an idea," she replied quietly. "I'm sorry. I'm ruining your little speech."
He shook his head. "No, this will be easier." He stooped before her and took her hand. Looking into her eyes he said, "Kelly Antilles, I love you with all my heart. Will you marry me?"
Her response was not what he expected. "So, did you ask Wedge?"
A confused look crossed his face. "What?"
"For my hand? Did you ask him if you had his blessing?"
Pash chuckled. "You just know everything, don't you?"
Kelly grinned, "No, not everything. I sure didn't know I was going to be made a Major. Or that I was going to be totally embarrassed at this dinner."
"But you deserve it."
"Maybe, but to me, it's just my job. It's my reason for being here. Just like right now. My reason for being here is to tell you 'yes, I will marry you.'"
That really took Pash off guard. He stared at her slack-jawed. "You are amazing. How you take something so deep and serious and answer someone's question at the same time. You are completely amazing." He took her in his arms and held her close.
The End...
For now...
