Princess Alyssia and the Whales’ Song

by Mary Beth Pinard-Brace

Princess Alyssia sat on the rocks. The waves crashed about her and she felt the spray on her face. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. The salty air smelled so good. Alyssia loved the ocean and all the creatures that dwelled in it. Most of all she loved the whales, the gentle giants whose ancient grace ruled the waters.

Sometimes the great beasts would come to her and take her to their underwater kingdom. She loved to play with the brightly colored fish that lived amidst the corals. They tickled her as they swam around her fingers and toes. The flowers of the ocean bloomed on the reef and she was amazed at the beauty that lived beneath the waves.

The dolphins were the children of the sea - laughing and leaping, diving and playing games. Sometimes they would take her hand and she would join their fun and frolic. At other times the whales would serenade her with their song as the dolphins danced to the tune. Sometimes she would bring her flute down to the water and play for these gently creatures. At those times, they would dance upon the waves, a perfect reflection of nature’s harmony.

These were her favorite times - the flute’s tune carried on the ocean breeze as she played for her treasured friends. Alyssia listened to the waves rolling on the shore, their rhythm keeping time to the music. She stood as the great giants danced. She stood until the sun set, watching it melt into the sea, setting the sky ablaze with beautiful salmon pinks and purples. She stood as the moon awakened and its tiny silver slippers tiptoed on the waves. Then, the giants would dive deep into the dark waters and vanish. Alyssia would make her way up the stone steps that led to her cottage home. She would sleep and dream happy dreams of whales and dolphins, sunsets and moonbeams.

She dreamed of a great underwater city and palace where she would sit on a golden throne and listen while beautiful mermaids played their harps and sang for her. They adorned her with jewels and the giant oysters came and offered her rare pearls of most unusual color. She was queen of the ocean, protector of all aquatic life - even those that dwelled in the dark caves - those who frightened the sons of man.

She smiled and shook her head - man had more power for harm than the sea beasts. Man polluted the seas and hunted for profit. He had no understanding of the beauty that dwelled below the waves. But, before her dream darkened with haunting thoughts, the whales returned. Their gentle, knowing eyes were so wise and kind - forgiving. She lost herself in their great dark depths and floated peacefully till morning.
The End
