Review

Ramji (Madhavan) is an innocent, illiterate brahmin cook who hails from a village near Palaghat. When he is not able to give the promised dowry for his sister, he takes up the offer from a rich Tamilian to go to Australia and be a cook for him. After an initial amusing air travel he lands in Melbourne and is shocked to find that the person who had offered him a job is dead. To make things worse he loses his passport and visa. While pondering about his current predicament he happens to rescue a spastic child of a Tamilian reastarant owner(Srimaan) who immediately takes a liking for him and after hearing his woes, he and his wife (Anu Hassan) decide to give him a job as dosa master in their restaurant. But soon the immigration department takes him into custody and the only way out is to get into a marriage of convenience with Damayanthi (Geetu Mohandas), a Srilankan Tamilian who is an Australian citizen. Damayanthi is already engaged, but agrees to this marriage to make some quick money. The Australian police and immigration are on Ramji's trial and he makes a mess of everything due to his innocence. Meanwhile Damayanthi's fiancée's true colors are revealed by Ramji and she starts loving Ramji. All ends well at the end.

The strength of a comedy film lies in the screenplay. The screenplay by Kamalhassan effectively brings out the comic situations and makes the film a treat to watch. Madhavan yet again shows his versatility in doing a role which is far from the regular hero stuff. His Palghat diction, the innocent look and a dumb smile gives flesh to the character. Geethu Mohandas has the ruggedness and yet appears soft in the role of a Srilankan girl staying abroad.

Siddharth, the associate of noted cinematographer Anil Mehta in his debut film has shown the visual beauty of Sydney. Ramesh Vinayakam's music is offbeat. For the Kamalhassan fans the song `Stranded in the street' sung by him and coming in the last scene in the `Sandiyar' getup along with Jayaram is a treat.
