It is 99.99% certain that HEPTON of Bubwith (near Selby) is of the HEBDEN family and that the name simply evolved from a combination of illiteracy, phonetic spelling and regionalized accents.

LEONARD HEPTON appeared in Bubwith in the early 1600s. He married Margaret (who died in 1675) and together got busy producing ten children.

Their daughters were Ann, Magdalen, Merriell, & Margaret, who married a Thomas Bennison.
The eldest,THOMAS ws born in 1625 but probably died before 1634 when another child called Thomas was born .
JOHN (1625 – 1694) had children William Hepton (b1660), Frances born 1661 & married Joseph Bloome, Anne b1662 & Sarah 1663-1664.
ROBERT( b 1637) had three children, Jeane, Hellen & John. None would appear to have lived to adulthood.
MATTHIAS was born 1629 and lived to age 23 and does not appear to have had issue. THOMAS 1634-1667 had three children - Leonard, Matthew & Anne all of who died before aged 21. Ann, however, would appear to have died in childbirth as the same year she gave birth to an illegitimate daughter Anne.

Leonard and Margaret di have one child who managed to keep the Bubwith line going.
WILLIAM HEPTON 1628-1678 had three children, Jane, William (who died by age 20) and JOHN.

JOHN HEPTON (1666 –1741) married Elizabeth Constance and they had four children but once again, in this generation, only one child survived to adulthood..
William, Anne & Elizabeth all died before the age of 10 and it was left to the youngest child JOHN HEPTON (1706-1765) to keep the line going.
He married Ann and they seemed to have more success.

JOHN and ANN had nine children between 1727 and 1748. Of many of them, we know little more than their names and year of birth. It may perhaps be that some provided branches of the HEPTON family but the details have not yet been found.
Mary married a man called Proctor and produced some little Proctors.
