WILLIAM HEBDEN was possibly born in Halifax. It isn’t known when he was born though he died sometime after 1700. His wife was a MARIE HOPKINSON and they married around 1664 in Halifax, which likely means that William was born around 1640.

William and Marie lived in the Skircoates area of Halifax and raised at least three children there.
Their eldest child was Ellen b 1665, followed by Ann five years later. Three years after that came WILLIAM, christened in 1673 in St John the Baptist, Halifax.

William Junior was a clothier of Halifax and before he died in 1732, he and his unknown wife produced five children – another William (b 1708), Richard (1710-1792+), Sarah (b1713), Thomas (1717-1795+) & John who died after 1795.

The fortunes of only two of the sons are known.
RICHARD became a dresser by trade and married a lady of Halifax called SARAH LISTER in 1737.
His brother THOMAS married MARY HOWARTH in 1740 and produced one known son, JOHN born in 1742.

RICHARD HEBDEN and SARAH LISTER were a little more prolific, producing nine children in total, all born in Halifax.
MARY b. 1737 who married HENRY ROBERTSHAW in 1785
SARAH b. 1739 who married JOHN NICHOL
WILLIAM 1740 – 1816
JOHN b 1742 in Halifax
RICHARD 1744-1783 who married an ELIZABETH CHADWICK
ELIZABETH b. 1747
HANNAH , birth date unknown and who married a JOHN INGHAM
RUTH b. 1753 and finally FRANCIS b. 1748

Richard and Sarah’s eldest son WILLIAM followed in the family footsteps and became a clothdresser. He was born and died in Halifax but married SARAH KEIGHLEY of Birstall ( near Leeds), daughter of John Keighley, gentleman of Birstall.

Their children, all Halifax born, were BETTY b. 1762, THOMAS 1763 – 1795, MARY b. 1766, JOHN 1768-1850, ELIZABETH b. 1774, ANN b1772 and RICHARD 1776-1817.
Richard jnr married an Abigail Webster and they had a daughter Ann Eliza born 1813. Mary married William Barraclough and had two sons. Thomas married a Mary Sutcliffe in 1791 and had two daughters Mary and Hannah.

Their son John born 1768 in Halifax, married ELIZABETH WEBSTER in1792 in Halifax. John became a woolwright by trade as well as a Halifax trustee.
They had nine children, all born in Halifax. There were eight daughters and one son. Sadly the sole son THOMAS died young (1798-1825). Most of their daughters also died young and unmarried apart from two, MARY ANN (b1800) who married JOHN BURNLEY in 1836 and ELIZABETH (b 1802) who married a ROBERT SKIRROW.

Richard and Sarah’s youngest son FRANCIS born 1748 in Halifax.married ELIZABETH MURGATROYD of Luddenham. His date of death is unknown but he was a clothmaker for the firm Milner & Hebden & Co., though whether this was his father’s firm or his, I do not know.

FRANCIS & ELIZABETH had three sons - JOHN 1779-1852, Halifax and JAMES 1787- 1867, & WILLIAM 1783-1838

The youngest son WILLIAM married MARY SMITH. William died in 1838 but Mary survived until 1873. Both died in Halifax. They had seven children…..
First there was HARRIET (1821-1891), GEORGE, a bank manager of Halifax (b1822) and WILLIAM HENRY(B1824). The curious thing about these three is that they all died in 1891, though William Henry’s death occurred in Penzance.
Then came FREDERICK b. 1824 who married MARY CLEGG in 1854 in Halifax. ELIZABETH was born/christened in 1827 as was her brother WALTER. MARY JANE followed in 1829.

WALTER, although born in Halifax died in 1898 in Harrogate. He was married to MARY RHODES and had two sons, ARTHUR (1862-1869), HENRY 1865- 1923 and married to MARGARET FOXCROFT and finally ANNIE (1868-1955).

The eldest son JOHN (born 1779 in Halifax) was an adjutant in the Candadian war of 1813 and eventually died in 1852 in Halifax. His wife is unknown but he had two sons.
James was the eldest, who also died in 1852 but in Hackney. Working on the basis that John his father was about 22 when he married, (which would make that about 1801) it can be assumed that his son John was born sometime around 1802-1815-ish and therefore would have died quite early on in adult life. Nothing is known of whether John was ever married or had any children.
The second son was FRANCIS who was born in 1800 in Ballymena, County Antrim, Ireland., presumably whilst his father was serving there. Francis later died in 1884 in Halifax. In the intervening period he became a silversmith and watchmaker of Leeds, marrying in 1838 in Woodhouse, Leeds to a lady called ELIZABETH CARR of Hunslet in Leeds.

Francis and Elizabeth Carr had seven children. The eldest was WILLIAM CARR HEBDEN, born and dying in Halifax 1840-1918. William Carr Hebden was a chemist by occupation but also became a councilor and a JP. Next came FRANCIS b. 1842, and then JOHN who was born in 1843 in Halifax but travelled afield to end up dying in 1885, in Linwood, New Zealand. His four younger siblings ELLEN ( b. 1849) HENRY ( b. 1850), FANNY (b1852) & MARY JANE (b1855) all also died in New Zealand. What made the six younger children of Francis and Elizabeth emigrate to New Zealand whilst William Carr, the eldest, remain in Leeds is something that intrigues me. Henry, interestingly enough disappeared whilst gold prospecting so perhaps the answer is something as simple as going off adventuring and to find their fortunes. The sisters do not appear to have married at all.
JOHN, however, married JANE FELDWICK in 1870 in New Zealand. Like his father he was also a clock and watchmaker but also became a newspaper editor.
They had five surviving children.
FRANCIS HENRY was born in 1872 in NZ and married GRACE SOMERVILLE MARKS in 1898.
CLARE ELIZABETH HEBDEN 1874 to 1904 married. WILLIAM MUNDY in 1900
WILLIAM JOHN b. 1875
IVY ELLEN b. 1882 married ERIC THEO MOLLER in 1905
& HERBERT EDWARD 1878- 1898. There was also a stillborn son born in 1871. Nothing further is known of the descendants of these children although it is known that they can be found still in New Zealand.

John’s elder brother FRANCIS also emigrated but to Australia rather than New Zealand sometime ( it is thought) after 1904. In 1862 he had married SARAH ROBERTSHAW in Halifax and was a watchmaker and jeweller by trade. I have a note that he was also a pioneer in the electric telegraph although in what capacity I have no idea.

Francis and Sarah had four children, HARRY a manufacturing chemist born 1872 in Halifax. He married MARGARET RICHARDSON and eventually died before age 60, in 1928.
His sister ELIZABETH was born in 1866 and at some stage had a son, name unknown, likely illegitimate.
Then there was EMILY ANNIE SARAH (b 1864) who married JAMES EDWIN BIGGIN in 1888 in Bradford.
Followed by FLORENCE AMELIA who married a BENJAMIN PERCY FLOCKTON of Nottingham in 1918 and, finally,
FRANK b. 1868 in Halifax who married a lady called FLORENCE.
No more is known of this particular branch and whether Francis remained in Australia is unknown.
