SAMUEL HEBDEN lived in Bainbridge and had married Margaret Metcalfe in the year 1724 in Askrigg and from here there were five children.
JAMES HEBDEN who was born 1720 in Arncliffe. He later died in Garsdale aged 83. His first wife had been Isabella Greenbank and they married in 1749 in Horton in Ribblesdale before having four children all born in Ingleton - Jane (1752) who married someone named Winn, Margaret (1755) who married William Geldred (Geldard?), Agnes (1758) who married William Proctor and finally, ROBERT who was born in 1750. He was married in Ingleton to a Jane Geldard in 1769. They had seven children, the eldest being, James, ( 1786) and who married Mary Metcalfe in 1812 in Ingleton. Then followed Jenny , Isabel and Jane, of whom no more is known. They were all born in Horton in Ribblesdale.
RODGER HEBDEN,( Roger ), farmer of Buckden, son of Robert and Jane, was born 1723 in Arncliffe and died 1803 in Hubberholme, where he was buried. His wife was Margaret Preston and they married on 11th May, 1752 in Arncliffe. Their three girls were all born in Hubberholme. Fanny was born in 1751, SUSANNAH was born five years later and then, three years after that in 1759, NANCY was born.
His wiill mentions daughter Susan Tennant (Susanah?) as well as her illegitimate son Roger. Other children were Margaret Holmes & Fanny Taylor. This may have been Fanny's second marriage as in about 1772 she married a Thomas Downham and of the following, Reuben was one of 7 children that Fanny and Thomas had. Grandchildren mentioned in Rodger's will were Abigail Hebden, Nancy Sharp, Rueben Downham, Margaret Thomas & Fanny Thomas. Witness Isabella Coates.
SUSANNAH would appear to have first had an illegitimate child RODGER HEBDEN before she went on and married Stephen Tennant and had a son Thomas. This Rodger went on in due course to marry Isabel Coates.
There are two or three main things to note about this short line. It came out of the Askrigg and Bainbridge area in the late 1600s and so relationship with the Raisgill & Marsett line would be the obvious conclusion though not definitive . Secondly, one of the children is called Marmaduke. This name crops up from time to time in a couple of lines and we have no note of his descendants. Samuel is not a particularly unusual name per se but it has not occurred very often in the Hebden family and that too may be a hint as to how some of the branches link up.
James (b 1725 Askrigg) married Alice Harrison in 1750, Elizabeth (1726) married
However many children they may have had, only two are known – JAMES & RODGER
William then followed ( 1792) also born in Horton in Ribblesdale. His wife was Ann Worsley and they married in Linton In Craven in 1825.
Alice (1795 Ingleton) married Thomas Langstroth when she was 28 and finally, Nancy(1799 Ingleton) was married to John Thompson when she was 33
All of these grandchildren, with the exception of Nancy, would appear to have most likely been of Fanny's children by her marriage to Thomas Downham.
