We started walking at 8:20, going up Hau`ula Homestead Road and where it turns to the left we go straight into the valley. After climbing a small hill on the road we step over a small chain which blocks cars from driving in any farther. At the Na Ala Hele trail sign we turn left cross Maakua Stream and begin climbing what Tom said was the first of 13 switchbacks till we gain the ridge line.
Here are Kenji and Bill on one of the switchbacks which make reaching the ridge top much easier than going in a straight line. The first part of todays hike uses the Papali Loop Trail.
