Ancient History Historical Investigation, Research and Presentation Task  


The historical investigation is designed to provide opportunities for all students to further develop relevant investigative, research and presentation skills. For the investigation, students will need to use appropriate information technologies and so develop the key competency of using technology.

 

Grading:

Knowledge and understanding of content, and the historical argument presented         10 marks

Analysis and use of a range of sources – archaeological, literary and secondary           10 marks

Communication of historical understanding in appropriate form                                    10 marks

 

The process of  historical investigation involves:

 

• planning and conducting historical investigations

• comprehending archaeological and written sources

 

• locating, selecting and organizing relevant information from a variety of sources

• using a variety of sources to develop a view about historical issues

• analysing sources for their usefulness and reliability

 

• identifying different historical perspectives and interpretations evident in sources

• formulating historical questions and hypotheses relevant to the investigation

• using historical terms and concepts appropriately

 

• using information from a range or sources to develop and support an historical argument

• presenting and communicating the findings of a historical investigation using appropriate and well-structured oral, written and multimedia forms, including ICT.

 


Topic: Ancient Rome Society

Design an inquiry question based on one of the following aspects of this topic:
 (Discuss your question with your teacher first for approval before beginning research.)

1. Social Structure - the different classes and groups, and their different roles and characteristics.
2. Government and politics in the city and towns.
3. The legal system, law and order.
4. The differences in the roles and rights of men and women.
5. Trade and commerce - imports, exports, markets and shops.
6. Civil engineering – roads, drainage and water supplies.
7. Occupations – City, town, ports, trades, crafts, rural.
8. Religion – Gods, beliefs, customs, rituals, practices, State and private.
9. Architecture and building practices – designs and style –public and private, methods and materials.
10. Clothing (including materials, hats and shoes), fashion and adornments (jewellery, hair styles and make-up.)
11. Entertainment and leisure – public arena activities and theatre plays, family and individual, games and toys.
12. Public baths and brothels.
13. Home decorating for the different classes - walls floor, furniture and household items.
14. Food and diet – from daily common food and preparation to dinner parties for the wealthy.
15. The military – the different ranks, units and roles, weapons, training and daily life in the army.  

Presentation Guidelines:

 - Make your presentation using Photo Story3, Movie Maker or any media editing program
     such as Adobe Premier Element.
 - Your presentation must have slides, with voice narration, and some text or labelling.
 - Video inserts of your self (showing, displaying and discussing your sources and findings is    
    optional with this task.)

Presentation: Well structured, clear and effective communication of:-  inquiry question, content, use of sources and conclusion.
                     : The slides with narration, or video, runs smoothly and are relevant and visually interesting, and aesthetically appropriate, regarding images, background, sound/music, graphics etc.
