The large increase in the population was matched by an upsurge in the crime rate.

                  

         The prisons and even the prisons hulks moored on the English waterways were soon overcrowded.
   
                  
     

Convicts were transported on the first fleet in 1788 and a penal colony was established in Australia.

                      
                           

British soldiers, ex-convicts and later settlers, soon came into conflict with the local indigenous aboriginal population.
